If being outsold monthly everywhere except New Zealand is catching up, then sure EA... Sure.

How can a week old price cut amount to Xbox One "catching up quickly" when the sales gap is so large?

Are they obligated to prop Microsoft up based on all of those timed exclusive dealings they have together?

I knew it was Statham as soon as i read the thread title. And i wish the EA guy would share whatever he's smoking... it would've been a bit credible if he was talking US, but he said worldwide... riiiight.

Why does it matter who posted it?
And I'm pretty sure "the EA guy"- you know, just some lowly CFO dude- knows way more about how the consoles are selling than you do.

Well, if weekly sales WW before the price cut were (pulled out of ass numbers):

PS4: 500,000
Xbox One: 150,000

And then after the price cut:

PS4: 500,000
Xbox One: 200,000

He is correct.

Jesus people.

Dude's saying the MS is catching up to Sony's PRICING STRATEGIES, not sales.

It's a sensationalist Gamespot headline, and it's a sensationalist thread title.

Ugh.

"Our EA Access program is working wonders for the Xbox One. If only the PS4 followed suit, but Sony denied us and soon we're gonna leave those suckas behind. Yep."

Highly doubt that. Just because the gap isn't growing as fast as it was, doesn't equate to "catching up".

25m

I don't know....
Honestly, seeing as how PS4 will likely be over 17million at the end of the year alone, 25million cumulative seems really reasonable.

Welp. Now I feel stupid.

something like 15 mil ps4 -9 million xbones is probably about right
MS would have to sell through almost everything that's been shipped at this point to hit that number (basically 1M left in channel)

I don't even think MS exec's fall asleep at night thinking that's possible.

I think the article may have quoted him out of context, he probably ment in the U.S. the Xbox is catching up because of the price drop and bundles.

What I said still stands:

How exactly is the Xbone catching up? To close the sales gap it would need to consistently sell more than the ps4 for several months, and it has yet to do so for a single month in almost a year.

It's impossible for the Xbone to "catch up" right now. Unless they mean not in terms of total units sold but in terms of momentum.

Good for gamers

No, it's not. I don't understand where this is coming from.

Competitive platforms are good for the consumer. Sales parity is completely irrelevant to the consumer. In fact, if one platform lags behind the other, it is because the consumer has decided that one platform is not actually good for them. That is how it works. The dog wags the tail.

This "competition is good" thing has grown completely into a monster. Competition is the means by which a lessor is weeded out. If a platform is weaker, it should lose. That is competition. This whole "parity is good for the consumer"/"two platforms selling well is good for the consumer" sentiment is bizarre.

What you are espousing is not capitalism or competition but instead crony capitalism in which market competitors are propped up for the sake of having market competitors.

I didn't. Perhaps YOU did. None of those competitors were on "even footing" when it came to sales. They still aren't. Unless you think coke at 48b in sales is on even footing with PepsiCo at 16b.

Sales parity is IRRELEVANT to the consumer. Sales differential is the RESULT of competition.

Competition results in a winner and a loser. It's not best for the consumer to have everyone on even footing "just because that's best for the consumer." You won't find evidence of this in history; you are depicting controlled markets and zombie corporations.

Here's how it should work: two systems took different paths to the market. That is true. The market will validate them both independently. Someone might lose and it's going to suck for some Internet group.

People are confusing the outcome of competition with the benefits of competition, which is where this silliness over sales comes in.

Damn clickbait garbage...
statham actually believes this?

Is that a question? :p

That's not catching up, that's being outpaced slower.

He's probably using the same accounting method as the federal government when it claims the deficit is closing. Instead of meaning the national debt is reducing, the feds mean it just isn't growing as quickly.

To catch up one has to sell more, and world wide that ain't happening. Because otherwise even if the PS4 outsells Xbone by even just one unit this holiday then the gap continues to widen.

To be honest, i really want Microsoft to give a hard time to Sony since competition is better for all of us but the reality is, Sony are selling a lot more consoles than MS this gen and is the go to console among gamers. Everyone's talking about the PS4, it's the popular item this year and probably the 3-4 next.

Given how EA are more invested than most publishers in seeing Xbox One "catch up" in some fashion, I'm inclined to be wary of anything they have to say on the matter tbh.

Isn't Sony already north of 10mil consoles?

25mil after a year would be pretty fantastic, but while Microsoft is catching up, I don't think they'll sell 5mil in the next 1.5 months even if Sony ends the year at 15mil.

He must have meant US.... or weekly or something The only way this would work is if MS has sold an extra 5 mill somewhere :p

This is what I'm thinking, there is plenty of ambiguity in his comments to fuel a good 25 page thread on GAF

- does he mean global LTD? Unlikely I think. Slowly closing the gap depending on performance in the US, but that wouldn't be enough to use a phrase like 'catching up quickly'

- US LTD? Grey area here. Could Xbox have a strong enough Nov/Dec to make enough of a dent in the LTD to justify that phrase? I think it unlikely but it is possible.

- US weekly/monthly sales? Much more likely but even then the wording is odd, as they'd be expected to be beating PS4 in current sales.

Heh, doesn't EA and Microsoft have a lucrative partnership? (Plants vs. Zombies XBO timed-exclusivity, Titanfall XBO exclusivity, EA Access XBO-only, FIFA-exclusive bundles).

I wouldn't expect EA to toot anyone's horn, but Microsoft's.

the don't have 3-4 million consoles sitting on the shelves ( if we're are to believe they are close to 10 million shipped)

realistically 2-3M in channel. There is no hard evidence that EITHER console will hit 1M units each this holiday for each month.. which is likely at least what MS would have to do to hit 9M sold through.

hell, I don't even know if PS4 is going to hit 1M both months.. the only reason 15M sounds possible is because the system sells like crazy in the rest of the world also.

Isn't Sony already north of 10mil consoles?

Sony is at 13.5M sold-in. Over 10M sold through.. at this point likely 11-12M sold through.

Clearly Sony is dominating. And rightly so, they made a fantastic console and marketed it brilliantly. I hope their momentum continues.

I'm happy with my Xbox One I got recently, and it's great to see sales picking up. Mostly because more sold means a bigger install base which then means more population for online games.

I honestly don't feel like there is persuasive enough software out at the moment (Unity might do it), but 25M+ is in the realm of possibility.

How in the hell are they catching up when the gap is raising every day?

25+M after Christmas is pretty obvious, that's hardly a prediction

We understand that both consoles will move over 60 million consoles each. After 5-7 years.

Right?

There are no real losers in our era of gaming.

We get this, right?

All PR talk because EA has deals with MS. We're not dumb.

If that were really true, we would've heard it on a whole lot of other gaming sites.
