EA CFO: XBO Pricing Strategy Catching up to PS4, expects 25M PS4+XB1 after holidays

So many casualties in this thread needlessly....4+

---on topic, after mod edit:

As a permanent price drop with a bundled game the XB1 should do just fine in the U.S till E3 2015 (where a Sony announcement could shake things up). So I do agree that when it comes to pricing, MS is starting to catch up to the U.S market perceived value of its console.

I read the mod edit but I dont agree with the interpretation at all. To me he sounds like he is saying they will be catching up in sales. Either way it really doesnt matter as both will sell like hot cakes for Christmas just because it's christmas.

In this case that's just EA saying what they wish was happening due to their clearly extremely close relationship with Microsoft. In two weeks, they are not closing any real gap with PS4. More like made a glancing blow. So EA is simply stretching hard in this interpretation.

In the pricing strategy interpretation, everything actually makes sense. So I'll go with that one.

ha, this reminds me of that brouhaha last month from that article on NASDAQ.com quoting Pachter's prediction of the bone's Sept NPD victory as gospel-troof

While I do not understand the antagonism, nor the assertion that I changed a thread title, I do articulate the strategy in a couple places. You can look up a few posts for the last example.

Please reread the quote, and take a listen to the call, and help me understand how you're taking what is being said to mean that the Xbox One is catching up to the PS4 in unit sales.

If you're picking up any antagonism it's perhaps due to the fact that it's become tiresome the way most any thread which casts the Xbox One sales, market performance or graphics performance in a positive light is met with derision and scattershot attempts to discredit the sources or information therein.

Does it "matter"? Not really but the OP posted this thread with his interpretation of the quote and a mod decided to change it just fucking because.

It's just dumb.

It's kind if shady when a multiplatform publisher makes a statement like this that makes it seem like they are picking a side in this fight.

Are you implying that EA might perhaps have a preferred platform when their largest new IP was a MS platform exclusive, EA Access is also an MS platform exclusive, and their current chief operating officer was previously corporate vice president of entertainment at Microsoft?

The fuck has it got to do with EA. The 25M I get but the comment on catching up? Sure shows WHO they want to do well. Fuckers.

Although EA does have a close relationship with Microsoft, I suspect this has more to do with both consoles being important to their business. They have no interest in either console lagging behind and not living up to potential. "X1 has a mediocre month," "X1 underperforms during crucial period," etc. are not headlines most publishers care to read.

So yeah, not sure calling EA "fuckers" is warranted in this case. I'm quite sure they're happy with Sony's success, as well.

Eh I've already said I don't know if it's true but if the Bone sells better in November it's catching up no?

Like I said, it's more just that people feel the need to instantly discredit stuff like this.

I just don't get it.

It will not sell better in November WW.

0% chance.

If it sells more in a month in NPD then it's caught up in NPD. There is precisely zero chance of it catching up if you include anywhere outside of the NPD. NPD only makes up about 40% of PS4 sales.

Perhaps Sony never originally wanted gaming to go online play!

Personally, I still to this day despise online and can't find the fascination behind running around the same map with no objective or story and just shooting human controlled avatars, etc.

It's ushered in all the bollocks I hate in gaming now; the microtransactions, the day one DLC, the tacked on MP in every game, the buggy releases that can be patched later, and so forth.

it might come as a surprise to you, but it seems that there are many people that care more for playing together and competing, than shooting or activating ..pre-programmed triggers.

you know, before we had online play, people used to share a couch for this kind of things. or even carry their computers along for the visit.

now, if you want to accumulate all the bad practices of the industry on ..online play, sure, go ahead. its not the correct story though.

It's got a lot to do w/ EA. They pick sides. They're like a snooty rich kid who's also a fanboy, but they stealth their fanboyism behind corporate talk and half-truths. If there's one company in the industry I can say I actually hate, it's EA. If they go bankrupt this gen, I want a parade in honor of their demise.

The quote and gamespot seem to be way off.

He's talking pricing strategy and gamespot is suggesting units sold... odd.

As long as Microsoft keeps their console at 349.99 they will sell a ton... they have a lot of critically acclaimed games that were released just from the first party alone so it shouldn't be surprising that they would move a ton of units.

but catching up to the ps4 in a few weeks would require a "Automatic classic" type game that makes everyone forget other consoles exist.

No such game was released this year so I think sales wise... Microsoft & Sony will be neck and neck this month... but Sony will still have the larger install base overall.

Just so I can hone in on your central thesis, you're saying a 32 year old global corporation with a $13 billion market cap and over 8,000 employees are "stealth fanboys" of the Xbox One, and that they'd prefer one partner to do better than their other partners. And that you would like to celebrate, with a parade, the demise and disappearance of this company, and its over 8,000 jobs.

Does this basically summarize what you're saying? If so, that appears to be a completely rational approach to this situation, where a CFO made a completely benign statement commenting on how the Xbox One has gotten cheaper, which is good for consumers and the new gen console market as a whole.

If a company engages in unethical business practices, like neglecting their customers' over their business partners' interests, then yes, going out of business would be a more than accepable outcome for me. If they faced only mild consequences or none at all, the deterrent would not be enough.

Note that I am not saying that EA engaged in such practices. But if they did, I would join any parade celebrating their disappearance too.

^

Oh no, they most definitely did.

The Spore DRM, trying to kill Visual Concept w/ the NFL exclusitivity, leaving Sega to die by not supporting Dreamcast at all, massaging MS to try and implement the DRM into XBO (that new service of theirs is probably just some of the remains of what would have been system-wide if it weren't for the backlash), re-releasing that new FIFA game on Wii that was EXACTLY the same as the previous version and trying to pass it off as the new year version, etc. They've got a lot of baggage on their hands.

As for that $13 billion and 8,000 jobs? Big corps have fallen before, look at Enron. And those employees have skillsets to land other jobs, hopefully at less ethically questionable companies. And I'm not going to cry over any CEOs losing their positions; they'll get compensation worth more than most of the employee salaries combined anyway, and get relevant positions at other companies.

Yeah, if EA drops, no tears from me. Only celebration. And I can say this so jubilantly b/c I know the chances of it happening are less than zero.

LMAO! You really want to believe this article so bad, huh?

It probably won’t be until January that Sony announces another PS4 ww sold through numbers update and puts all this nonsense to rest. In the meantime, we’ll probably have plenty of false hopes, persecuted victim narrative, and "sonygaf" meltdowns until then.

They'll probably announce the new number at the PS Experience event in December.

Microsoft will undoubtedly sell many units at those price points during the Holiday season. January will be an interesting month number wise for all three parties for sure though!

But mods have always changed a misleading title. So are you against the title change because you are sick and tired of these "anti-Microsoft" attitude and this is another victim of those or are you sick of every mod-edit? It seems you are making a specific statement instead.

Well EA loves the moneyhats it receives yearly from MS. When MS asks EA to jump, they say how high or to the edge of the cliff. Peter Moore will forever be BBF with MS execs.

This particular edit.

It's dumb because it was basically changed because the mod interpreted the statement differently to the OP and to me, that's overstepping boundaries on a community board.

If it's a clear cut case of a title being factually misleading, sure change it but there's really no justification here unless EAs CFO has since clarified exactly what he meant.

You'd probably want to go for a consensus on a community board. In my opinion he is clearly talking about pricing strategy catching up to where Sony is, ie. becoming cheaper.

I think both consoles had a similar pricing strategy, just MS bundled kinect but without it they were both similar in price around the globe.
I think the outcome (or current situation) this gen wasn't determined by pricing. Looking at the back end of last gen I think that's had a bigger impact as well as the length of time on the market compared to the start of last generation.

I'm actually laughing at this post.

Dude, you may have chosen to believe Gamespot's article saying that "The Xbox One is "catching up quickly" to the PlayStation 4 in terms of worldwide sales", but you're wrong. We know the PS4 has significantly outclassed it in NPD every month this year, last reports indicate the PS4 had around a 1.5:1 advantage in the UK, and there is approximately zero chance of the Xbone performing better in any other region. It's not really open to interpretation; common sense tells us that the EA CFO was either wrong, lying or misquoted.
