But a MS win could give them an advantage and momentum going forward. It could be the start of MS consistently outselling the PS4. Which is the point I'm ultimately making. Give them an inch and they take a mile sort of thing. The XBone is now cheaper than the PS4 (and it's certainly not going back up in price) so MS has price on it's side now. There are millions of 360 owners yet to upgrade and when the time is right, now and in the future, are they going to opt for a more expensive system or the one they're more familiar with, which their other 360 mates may have perhaps upgraded to as well. And recently, parity and games not seeing a huge difference, means the technical superiority of the PS4 isn't as strong or meaningful to most, as it was 6 months or so ago. Price and power were certainly on Sony's side but one has been reversed and the other isn't so important to the masses if they are getting it for less and their friends have one too.

As I said, Sony will still be very happily with selling millions this holiday and MS winning takes nothing from that, but if they are behind and MS gains more traction, that lead can easily be wiped and gives MS the lead in a market Sony needs to really get behind and not let the competition steam roll them again like last time.

I highly doubt Xbox One could ever outsell PS4, regardless of price or games. When we look back at previous gen, Microsoft had a lead of +/- 7-8 million consoles by the time the PS3 launched. Still, even when the PS3 was priced higher, had less games (initially) and had the worse multiplats of the two consistantly, the PS3 since it launched outsold the 360 yearly by about 1 million consoles. The PS3 and 360 were equal in sales about 7 years in.

Even in those conditions, the PS3 outsold the 360. However, in this gen, the PS4 is competitively priced, more powerful and has been availible in many more markets than the Xbox One. So if the PS3 outsold the 360 (worldwide) on a yearly basis with bad conditions, imagine how much PS4 will outsell Xbox One with its favourable conditions. The PlayStation brand has a power many people here don't realise.

I think Sony could be doomed in the US now.
Wait til MS makes an announcement on whether they raise the price in Janurary. If they do, Sony has nothing to worry about. If the keep it at $349… well, they might trade some months as 1st place.

I can't take anyone seriously when they say the DS4 is Mad Catz quality

The battery is shit. The thumb sticks are shit. The triggers stick. I've replaced two of them already.

As for the quality of Sony's first party efforts, some of you keep fighting the good fight. The reality is, they're simply not very good. I've played most of them, and the best BY FAR is a remake of a year+ old game. I do like Resogun though.

As for Driveclub guy, you should check out Forza Horizon 2. That game actually works and is very well executed.

Regardless, eye on the ball, I think the PS4 is the better system solely because of the hardware architecture. But I'm still buying far more Bone games because everything else is better on that side of the fence.

Injustice was another one certain people conveniently leave out despite including Titanfall as a highly rated Xbone exclusive.
Ehhh...technically that also came out for last-gen systems. And technically TitanFall's also on 360 and PC.

That's why we gotta qualify this stuff in a way that makes sense. When people say "exclusive", do they mean among next-gen consoles, among platform family or just straight-up "traditional" exclusive? Used to be so easy to say what was exclusive or not even back early last gen :S

I'm just talking US. WW, XBone has less than no chance to outsell the PS4.

He's obviously talking about US, not worldwide. The 360 dominated the PS3 in the US.

Because they got their UI right the first time?

I feel that in my opinion, they got the UI wrong and it's one of the things I hope that they change and fix sometime soon. Being that I buy all my games digital, that bar line of games and having no organization makes everything kinda crappy for me as I just have a random line of games that only go by the most recent, and the library portion isn't much better considering you can only access it if you are online, and still only has the most basic sorting option ever. Sure it loads fast, but something like that is very important, and my Wii U, Vita and 3DS all have the ability to do this. I mean I don't see why they didn't follow in the Vita UI footsteps allowing folders and whatnot, it's just so much better and user friendly than what we actually got. It's one of the main things stopping me from buying more games on my PS4, I actually like to make every customized to how I like it. Personally IMO, PS4 has my least favorite UI out of all the systems I currently own (Wii U, PS4, Vita, 3DS, PS3, PC)

The 360 did dominate the PS3 in the US. The 360 privided services geared toward the US and Microsoft did bundles quite often in the US to keep the momentum going. It seems like Sony is doing the same this time around, offering different bundles.

I think it's only a matter of time before MS will take over in the US. They have the luxury to only care for one territory really and will throw everything in there. Meanwhile Sony still has to care about the EMEA (Its tied with the Americas market) and Asia both of which will probably grow alot this generation and require a lot of attention from Sony.

I just don't understand some people's obsession with this. You want it because of the nostalgia? or people honestly believe it was better than Xbox 360s 2012 update?

This is crazy, it was a good UI in fuckin 2005. They have added shit load of new stuff since then, why would anyone want to go back.

sorry, what?

ps4 has outsold xbone the past year. it is so premature to look way ahead and assume a november win will turn things around. that is overly optimistic it is downright delusional.

why are you suddenly thinking, "this win will wipe out ps4 in north america"?

if the ps4 winning for a whole year can't even wipe out the xbone, what makes you think xbone winning a month can wipe out the ps4?

these black Friday deals are just that: deals.

it is called cutting the price to increase sales volume. xbox is sacrificing their holiday profits, inarguably the biggest two months of the year, so they can place more xbones inside homes because they don't have anything else they can do right now. halo mcc was their last attempt at getting xbones to homes without resorting to a net loss, after titanfall and sunset and forza horizon 2 yet they still got outsold up to that point.

now, a temp price cut is a short-term thing. it'll go back up after the holidays and xbox will harp about how they won the holidays and how they're back.

Why is everyone so focused about sales in the US. Even if Microsoft beat ps4 this month in the US, they still would be beaten worldwide. Therefore, still losing the month of November in sales. Yet, everyone will act like its some sort of victory. If you are going to compare sales then compare sales of TOTAL units sold in all territories. Not just 1 country. Sillyness.

That's kind of my take as well. And of course I wonder how much xbox will suffer in 2015 now that the expectation is crazy-assed deals. I just can't see the division being allowed to just lose money forever trying to win some 'war' that mostly matters to us.

That being said, if losing a ton of money for two months really does turn around the perception, then maybe it's money well spent? Just a little hard to wrap my mind around hemorrhaging money being a good thing.

Because if MS doesn't move units, then they may as well pack it up for real. That's why what they are doing is smart. It's buying season. Why should they sit back and not try?

From what I saw on Black Friday, Hardware wise people did buy an Xbox One on impulse. Software wise, more people bought PS4 3rd party titles. I doubt that will suddenly change after the holidays, with a shift to Xbox One. I can see MS lowering the game title prices next year to get more people buying the software.

I barely saw anyone buying PS4's. I even bought an XBONE from Walmart with Halo, and I can easily say I'm a Sony fanboy. Sunset Overdrive and Master Chief Collection were just so tempting, especially when it was really about $280 thanks to the $50 GC from Walmart. The $40 Blue Camo controller at Best Buy was fantastic. These are gifts from my family, and I don't mind waiting for Christmas so I can go through Dragon Age, Smash, and Pokemon from last week.

Because it's where most who post live, and it's like the only market MS gives a damn about these days. It's this outlook on things that shaped the perception MS wasn't a distant second or maybe last with the 360 by the western gaming media in sales. Also I expect a lot of over reaction by this same press crew when MS outsells the PS4. They practically did a liquidation sale one year after launch to try and change the narrative in the us.

Kinect wasnt a price drop…

Dropping their vision in order to offer a lower entry point makes it more of a price cut.

For one that depends if they win December also and if the price indeed stays at $329 after said "limited promotion". Otherwise it could be like last year where XB1 won December and lost the rest of the year. Also for them to catch up they need to outsell PS4 by a good margin like 300k+ in Nov+Dec then outsell it by 80k+ each month consistently to reverse the lead otherwise letting the PS4 win a couple of months next year will just result in a continued market share battle where they are not really closing the lead because of the on and off win/loses.

What I'm saying is it could be the start of winning it back, the cheaper price/bundles MS have gone crazy for gives them an advantage and momentum to gain back sales and if it continued then they could close the gap quite easily over the next year. I very much doubt MS will be putting the price back up to $399 come January. I believe it will stay at $349. If it does, then it's a real danger that could certainly see MS win back the US as long as Sony doesn't react much and be more competitive than what they are now (unlike in the UK where they have fought to stay competitive). If the price goes back up, then yes, MS I think will struggle again, especially early next year when Sony have stronger releases. But I can't see that scenario ever happening now. Unless MS are losing far too much and are losing a hefty sum per console which even for them isn't sustainable. But MS needs someone to buy their system and if anywhere, it's going to double down on the US and bite that bullet.

Price cut is certainly a short term fix, but if they stay cheaper than the PS4, than that short term fix becomes long term. And I know the PS4 still hasn't come down in price yet and Sony still have that card to play, but really if XBone wins Nov and or Dec I just feel, like in the UK, Sony could have done so much more in the US to soften MS attempts.

what are you talking about?

http://majornelson.com/2014/10/27/xbox-one-available-349-us-holiday-season/
The Season of Xbox will begin on November 2, when Xbox One will be available for a special, limited-time promotional offer of $349 in the U.S.

they are bringing the price down for holiday to get more xbones to homes during the busiest day of the year. they didn't announce a permanent price cut unless they plan to lose money this gen.

if they stay cheaper then that was never a short term fix to begin with, but we all know they specicifically said it's for this holiday therefore it is a short term fix.

The "shit load of new stuff" they added, namely advertising, avatars, bing just wasn't welcome.

A game console should be able to primarily show me my games library and show me my friends list. Achievements and the Store should be accessible but not obtrusive. That's it. The UI should let you play games and get out of the way.

Blades was minimal in a very good way. Sadly, it was probably the high point of the Xbox OS. I am not a fan of the current state of affairs.

Come on now! It's not nearly as bad as you make it out to be. Sure, the battery could be better, but it easily lasts through a play session for me. As for the sticks and triggers, they have performed excellent for me on a year old launch controller. That's not to say a small number of people haven't had stick issues, it's just not everyone.

The quality of game lineups is subjective. In my opinion, I enjoy Sony's diverse library including first-party and the quality indie games. You like XBox's library better and that's okay as well. That doesn't make either one of us wrong though, but just says that one person's opinion doesn't reflect everyone else's.

US is the main market of Xbone. It doing particularly good or bad in that market is worth discussing. We all know Xbone will be beat worldwide.

"The holidays are starting early this year as the Season of Xbox will begin on November 2, when Xbox One will be available for a special, limited-time promotional offer of $349 in the U.S. Special promotional pricing of $50 off the console of your choice applies to any Xbox One console, including special edition bundles, offering some of the year’s most anticipated games - Assassin’s Creed Unity, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Sunset Overdrive. With Xbox One available at its best price yet, and savings up to $150 off select bundles, there’s never been a better time to own an Xbox One."

Okay? That doesn't mean they can't or won't decide to indefinitely keep the price at that level if it's helping their sales so much. Quoting this is like saying that because they announced a previous price of $499 initially, that means they'll never ever decide to change it. Same thing with Kinect.

Well, who knows what shareholders would say? If 350$ (330) Xbone caused so much money leaks, i think MS will return price to 399.

What is this momentum nonsense? MS sell their console at some effective $250 and about everyone on the fence (or even not) got one now.

Why would anybody wait to get an XB1 next year?
- because of the highly anticipated exclusives through 2015?
- because they rather want to get one at regular $399 price? (or $349? or $299 with no games bundled?)

The next time XB1 might outsell PS4 will be at $199 or insane bundles next November at $249 ($229 on BF).

Disagree. You make it seem temporary to get people to jump right away at the fleeting deal. I don't think they'll bundle two games, etc. but I do think Kinectless at 349 w/a pack in could be a thing. The Kinect was expensive for a peripheral.

This is all subjective, but I've had a lot of fun with InFamous, DriveClub, LBP3, and TLOU:R this year. I think they're far from "not very good", and are of comparable quality to what you'll find on the Xbox One in terms of metacritic scores, which I personally don't put a ton of faith in.

Regardless, Sony hasn't even had their best teams release games yet, and multiplatform titles largely play better. So it's not like your PS4 owner is lacking in titles to play until their better stuff arrives next year.
