Xbox One beats PS4 on Black Friday, according to market-research firm

Wonderful. So can we completely disregard anything this site has to say?!

No, absolutely not. PS4 came out on 15/11/13 in the US, Xbox One came out on 22/11/13, Black Friday was 29/11/13. PS4 arguably sold faster and was very supply constrained until February. So by Black Friday there were simply not enough PS4 available in stores to keep up with demand, that's why Xbox One won back then even if PS4 won the month.
Now we know that Xbox One outsold PS4 for the last three weeks in the US (according to Microsoft) and that Xbox One outsold PS4 at Black Friday 2014 (might be 50 : 30, might be 45 : 35, but they won) and unless PS4 sold a ton in the week before BF (which it won't because at that time everybody keeps their money together for BF deals) Microsoft will take November NPD by more than 100k units. Unless Microsoft has been lying about outselling PS4 and it was just some PR spinning like "for the last three weeks we have actually sold more than PS4 sold the month before". You never know until NPD thursday.
But it makes sense. Xbox One is now cheaper than PS4. It has the more interesting exclusives this holiday season. And PS4 was always going to get to a point where demand is slowing down, it's not like the market itself has changed and there is suddenly more people willing to buy a traditional console at a given price, it's just that PS4's value proposition until some weeks ago was better and that led to more sales.

Let's just say there are X people willing to buy a console at $400. Those people look at their options and the majority chooses PS4 because it offers more for the money. But there are also Y people willing to buy a console at $300. Those people look at their options and the people choose Xbox One because they can't get a PS4 for that money. Traditionally the lower the price, the bigger the potential market, so Microsoft is just pulling in money from a different (bigger) market than Sony and that logically leads to bigger sales overall.

But of course this comes with a catch. Microsoft is selling Xbox One at a loss, Sony is selling PS4 for a profit. This holiday season Microsoft might look like the winner in terms of console numbers, but it's gonna get destroyed by Sony in terms of profitability. Microsoft can easily lose $200 million with Xbox One this holiday season in the US.

Who the hell still buys last gen consoles? Some kid opening up a brand spanking new console on Christmas morning.

"Wow! Thanks for the Xbox...360??!??"

With all the free GWG games I was looking to retire my Jasper unit for a new 500GB E system. But not with those prices.

I'm not one of those types with an unhealthy emotional investment in console sales figures, but recently I've been feeling like I would like to see PS4 outsell Xbox One for Nov NPD because the meltdowns that would ensue would be a truly fascinating spectacle to behold.

I don't think it will happen, but it'd be a sight to see if it did.

Outside of MCC, which probably still isn't fixed, the exclusives don't matter.
The reality is consumers are looking at two very similar consoles, that play all the latest games. One is $400 and the other has been $350, and even $330 with a gift card and free game(s).
It's really that simple.

I can't wait for all the meltdowns and new gifs

When are we getting an announcement regarding BF?

I'm not expecting a great gap in numbers whatever will win. But surely MS will cry like it would won the whole console war.
If they did, then it wont be long before MS tells us all about it. :)
Without any doubt.

Ugh if they take a lead anywhere gamers have lost.

Hahaha.

Oh man, what's next, "only true gamers play on PlayStation."?

Some people here come off as genuinely upset about this. What does it matter to you? MS isn't going to come to your house and drop kick your PS4 just because they win a singular month out of the year... and PS4 releases don't change because of it.

Yeah and one is weak compared to thr other specs wise. Consumers are not ignorant and dumb. I think they will see the value in the more expensive console.

And to give some more insight to my previous comment, its fine to play on Xbox One but if MS gains a lead it will just go to show you can lie and cheat gamers, then say sorry we wanted to fuck you all over and all is forgiven.

Oh well guess I dont forgive and forget so easily. Fuck Ms.

UK is more far fetched yeah. US though... will wait for NPDs to see the impact.

What? how much more do you expect it to sell compared to the PS4? because expect PS4 sales fall of a cliff there is no way they can take the lead.

They will need to outsell PS4 by at least 1m+ in Nov+Dec to do that.

"return to form"

"xbox all in one entertainment system is the best place to game this fall according to consumers"

*list a bunch of statistics here to make it look better than it is*

*dont mention anything about profitability*

*mention the 360 and the "continued support" for the console*

"We would like to thank our fans for their continued support to the xbox platform..."

End.

Why would they mention anything about profitability? Unless i'm mistaken, that's not something that's usually released. Anyone who thinks they'd willing let people know they're losing money does not know how PR works.

I'd say the majority of consumers don't compare the "power" of consoles like they are Dragonball Z characters.

If it plays Fifa, Madden, CoD and Battlefield, that's all they care about.

The sales thread is full of people with a similar lack of emotional investment who enjoy fishing for meltdowns month in month out. No need to defend your motives.

As a PS4 owner or Sony fan... If your tinfoil nightmares come to pass, how exactly would that adversely affect you?

I disagree. I think one of the cause of the minor sales of the xbone compared ps4 it's the less power too.

But then you're looking at the games themselves and not the fact that four games, store credit and a console is far better than a console and one game. To a child on Christmas day being able to have a selection of games over one is great value.

Also which of these games are three years old? Unity launched this month, Black Flag is Q4 2013, Forza 5 is Q4 2013 and Lego Marvel Superheroes which is again Q4 2013.

XBOX One wasn't even out three years ago. I get the sarcasm but at least do it right.

I'm looking at the value proposition and the PS4 bundle is the better one.

And apologies if I wasn't clear, I meant that you're getting three, year old games in the bundle. Those games can likely be bought for peanuts now, so it's not as good in terms of value as it initially appears.

I think that was more due to the price and the headstart due to the price at launch. Most gamers not kn here just want to play with their friends and have the newest annual games which are uaially fine on both consoles

Before yesterday, as a PS4 and Wii U owner, I kind of hoped Microsoft beat Sony in sales because it's good competition.

Now that I own all three consoles, I hope Microsoft crushed Sony to scare them out of the unavoidable complacency that comes with the lead they have. I want desperation all around! Everybody wins!

Will see in the next months. I think people really underestimate how much impact can have a less powerful hardware in the sales, especially when in the past it has been always competitive.

1 million lead gone less than a month.
Well done MS

:)

If MS "won" then good one them. I would be interested to see how they can keep the kind of deals they're offering going into 2015.

If they can't - then all if this is rather moot isnt it?

Exacly even if the price stays at $329 they can't keep selling it with 2 games or even 1. I'm really interested to see how people will react to that next year.

Consumers dont care that the tech they buy in 2014 can hardly output games at the native resolution of their tv?

Sony will get into panic mode and rush unfinished games out the door : Stealth release for Bloodborne tomorrow, and GOW IV to ship on January, with only the title screen to look at until the rest is available to download in parts...smh!
Sony will not alter course, I am sorry to tell you. They have been selling very well, and making profits in the process; only a fool would deviate from a correct trajectory.

Nope, because to the average person, they really can't tell the difference. For all the nitpicking we do here on multiplats, the actual differences are so small people really don't notice.

The WiiU behind the Xbox 360? O_O

No price drop? No buy. Even with decent (though not great) software bundles that made WiiU look like a potential "deal", it's the bottom line that talks. How much is the consumer paying?

Meanwhile, 360 dropped to $100-- and it has a TON of cheap software, to boot-- so consumers looked at that & thought it was a better deal.

No, they don't. The average American consumer buying a gift (not someone buying a console for themselves that they have researched), likely doesn't know or care about resolution.

This is the time of year consumers are dumb. Heck look at the thread that had the guy sticking a pine cone up someone's ass fighting over a $99 TV. People want the cheapest thing if the item does similar functions. Especially parents buying for kids.

We get it, you don't like MS or the xbox one.

This "poll" wouldn't be indicative of sales but I think MS will have sold very close to, if not just above what the PS4 sold.

I saw digital black friday sales on the Xbox One in my country (X1 plus COD:AW and Unity and a nice discount), while the PS4 had nothing similar. The price difference in some stores was big.

However, I heard tales (can't actually believe them, though) about stores doing huge discounts in the PS4s that were stored locally

How are they complacent? Because they're not desperately playing catchup? Because they got their UI right the first time? Because they didn't have to unbundle an accessory that's a $100 anchor on the price? Because they didn't moneyhat Tomb Raider? I don't get the complacent comments.
