Best looking Wii U game out right now?

I would like to say Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, or even Bayonetta 2 but Captain Toad could very well be the best looking game. It looks like they took whatever engine and assets they used for Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 and just amped everything up.

I like that it's hard to pick just one though since a LOT of games look great or downright beautiful. It doesn't matter what the underlining tech is just the end result I feel. Once again screenshots do not do Wii U games justice and now how games should be judged.

So far we've only got comments with screenshots from games with cartoony graphics.
The art style of Nintendo games tend to rely on super colorful settings, pleasing to the eye. It reminds me of the Dreamcast, Sega games, the Sega blue. I just love this graphic signature Nintendo games have, with deep console roots, in contrast to realistic settings influenced by PCs.

My vote is for Mario Kart 8. Smash looks great at times but Kart delivers consistently beautiful visuals.

That's down sampled from 1440p to 1080p.

Unless there is a hidden 2 TF GPU in there somewhere it is not going to happen.

Nintendo do bullshots as well you know.

Why don't people post there own screen shots of gameplay rather than PR or Racing photo mode stuff so people can see what games actually look like when playing.

Games like Forza do better IQ in 'replay' mode its often hard to see pics of ingame

A line i believe was proven to be taken from 1 poster on beyond3d speculating that it was rather than a unanimous agreement saying this is so.

It's a pity there is no AA in MarioKart 8. It's a lot more noticeable in screenshots vs actual gameplay.

Mario Kart easily. Smash is cleaner, but far less impressive aesthetically to me. It looks closer to a Wii Smash running on a PC emu.

Kart's assets and lighting make it look "next-gen". In fact, I hold it as a tie probably for second best looking game I've played this year (Alien Isolation is the other game).

Its funny. My top three games all share lighting as the prominent tech for pushing its visuals.

Note they are in game from Digital foundry using elgato HD capture cards.

I checked out WiiU as some games looked OK, so I always check DF and was put off by the in game graphics (not what people post on gaf Forums). Sorry but 720p and those jaggies are really bad.

Bullshots look nice, but so do ubisoft games.

yep, haha. I always inquired whenever I heard that line repeated and someone finally linked me to the source. most people would just dodge or tell me to look in their post history for it or find it myself. well someone did finally link me to it and the extent of this "source" is essentially one sentence of someone thinking out loud.

is photobucket making them look like that?

oh and the screens I posted are mine

Mario Kart 8 then Super Mario 3D World and Bayonetta 2. Smash is super fluid and 1080p but it's not "that" good looking.

Wind Waker HD is gorgeous but it's a remake so I put in in a special place since even the original game still stands as a beautiful game for me.

Can't wait to see more of the next Zelda though. It's already really really impressive so if they manage to make a game with the same scale as OOT with this art direction I will be so happy ^^

Almost correct, the image is 1080p and the AA was so spectacular the disagreement was between whether it had the best AA ever or it was supersampled from a higher resolution (and which one, was it 1440p or higher).

Either way, if you believe you will get 1080p with superb AA, then keep believing. Speak to you next year

I have not played Smash, but would also go with Mario Kart.

People saying it's the best looking console game need to get off the crack though.

Yes it looks like that in game. No its not photo bucket, go look for yourself click on link then view full resolution.

Your pics are not while playing are they !

Its either a cut scene or some playback mode which ups the image drastically from in game (see Forza 5),

If the game played like your photos I would buy WiiU today - but I believe EG in game Elgato is showing what the game looks like while playing, and its ugly and not acceptable (for me)

I agree with you. I've always been more of a Sega fan myself, and it's clear to me that Nintendo is the best company right now to translate the "old-school" style to HD graphics. But I'm still curious at what point the "realism" on the Wii is right now.

We may have to see it in a more complex games but I wouldn't be surprised if Wii U could manage to do something not really far from this type of "realism"

I am not expecting 1080p with perfect AA, heck i'd be pleasantly surprised with 1080p for Zelda U to begin with. I am however disputing you saying as if it is a cold hard fact that beyond3d came to the unanimous agreement that it was 1440p downsampled when they clearly did not. Especially since looking through my post history i have had this exact same discussion with you before when you were adamant that this is what Pikmin 3 looked like as opposed to some of the shots posted in the topic. To which i had to actually boot up my game and take screenshots of the Armored Mawdad to disprove your clearly false belief.

Proper WiiU screenshot.

Beyond 3D = 720p and no AA.

I know what Pickmin looks like in game, I know what a bullshot looks like.
lol not only did you manage to not use retail screenshots (For which GAF has provided plenty) from the released game, you also managed to use screenshots from one of the earliest builds of the game.

The crystal on the Armored Mawdad hasn't looked like this since it's reveal.

This is what it actually looks like, screenshots uploaded by me from my Pikmin 3 game on my WiiU to my minus account.

Feel free to try your luck again though.

Also props on the attempted credibility by using Beyond 3D. Have to look as legit as possible right.

Drastically? DOF is the only thing MKTV adds to the picture, non-player cameras non-withstanding. That's why you get the exact same amount of aliasing in on-focus areas durinng MKTV as during gameplay.

Your dedication is admirable..
But those screens are from the game and everyone having played it can tell you it looks bright, colorful and wonderful, + 60fps makes it super impressive.

I can also take any area in any game where it looks bad and dark..

So not only do you not own a WiiU but you also try and show you know what WiiU games look like visually more than people who actually own one......

Yeah take the advice given to you here

Dude, buy a Wii U first, then Mario Kart 8 second.

Then enter this thread.

Before trying to say what is and isn't a WiiU shot.

I have to say MKTV (replays) add a tighter DoF so things look much nicer. In game, everything is sharp from front to back. Now, I don't really mind this since when you're racing you don't notice. But in replays, you tend to look at the environment more and so the DoF keeps the attention on the racer and cleans out the jaggies in the distance.

Here is a screenshot in-game:

wiiu_screenshot_tv_01xvxg7.jpg

wiiu_screenshot_tv_01stzhg.jpg

And in the replay:

wiiu_screenshot_tv_018au2m.jpg

Considering the replays are in-engine as well, I assume the DoF could've been added to the game as well but it probably helps to keep everything sharp during gameplay.
These are my own screenshots taken not more than 10 minutes ago, lol.

Nintendo guys, I know you're new to HD gaming and all... but those are obvious bullshots. Anybody with eyeballs can identify them as such.

Oh, and I own a Wii U and MK8. So my eyeballs are extra valid.

DF's captures are weirdly blown up to 1080p when the game actually renders at 720p.
To me it looks like a screen cap taken from their youtube footage.

Only way I can explain it because all their images had that weird look to them. Yet none of them look even remotely like they do in my TV

Smash Bros has decent art and does a good job at least attempting to keep the visuals coherent even if it's representing several franchises and graphical styles.

If we're talking about art direction, it's hard to ignore Mario Kart 8. Tropical Freeze also has tons of visual variety.

But man, after playing Smash in 1080p and being able to enjoy the smoothness of it in 60fps...it's hard to pick anything else. That level of variety with such a crisp picture is a wonder.

No, I look into a system as best I can before I decide if I am to buy it. I look at reputable sites such as Eurogamer / Digital foundry and gamersyde vids which I download.

The reason I check things out is if the games did look like some of the posts on here I would buy one - hence why I spent my time looking.

If DF are wrong there are doing harm to Nintendo and should be called out - I don't know. BUT I don't look at 'replay modes' or cut scenes, just in game stuff.

We got 2 x 360, 2 x Ps3, 2 x Ps4 and a Wii hooked up in the house. I am deciding on next system for exclusive games, wither WiiU or Xb1. IQ is important to me.

of course! that's what it was. I was taking screens during the cut scenes.

thanks for setting me straight!

Who cares about those screenshots, it's not like you're playing the game as a dia-show.

It looks beatuiful in motion and that's the only way you play it, I don't notice the jaggies while playing it at all.

I agree. The topic is Best Looking Wii U Game out right now... doesn't say which is the best looking game via screenshots. We all know many wii u games look beautiful when playing but don't hold up well in screens.

I'd say your eyeballs are extra invalid if you don't notice MK8's alising in motion. It's clearly obvious. The game refreshes at rock-solid 60fps which certainly helps, but the lack of AA is still painfully evident – especially if you're used to playing PS4 or PC games.

If you "don't notice" MK8's aliasing while playing then you really shouldn't be commenting on video game graphics. That's like a colorblind person commenting on RGB balance.

Right, and I'd rather have a good looking game in motion (MK 8) that a good looking game in screenshots (AC Unity).

His screenshots look terrible, so I'm not sure what you're getting at here. Jaggy mess.

It's a jaggy mess, but there is much more to the look of the game than just the jaggies. I still find it a very impressive game especially with lighting effects, use of colours and art direction. If you keep focussing on one aspect like the jaggies you're just ruining it for yourself.

Ok well, you have numerous people already telling you the game looks nowhere near as muddy and dull as that, you know, people that have actually played the game, not looked at screenshots. Even digital foundry were very positive on the visuals even if the screen grabs you are linking seem off for some reason.

But if everyone who has played the game is blind (or just too bias or something) the feel free to continue ignoring the Wii U, just please dont shit up the thread anymore trying to argue the few screens you've seen are somehow more indicative of what the game looks like than the multitude of people that have played it.

This thread as with most Wii U threads really brings out a bunch of fucking assholes

Yeah, I'm a little confused. I post that I think Mario Kart 8 is the best looking game of the generation, and some random dude, who reading back through the thread apparently has no interest in a Wii U but came into a Wii U-centric thread to Win the War, posts an unflattering screenshot to tell me that I'm wrong.
