"Street Fighter V is a PS4 console exclusive" (PlayStation Blog)

I hate when company execs say "all the fans will win from this" and other stuff like that. This is very clearly an example where some of the fans win

SFIV iterations combined sold 9+ Million copies plus DLC, plus mobile versions, plus merchandising. http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html

Street Fighter series sold 36M combined (not counting mobile games, movies, merchandising, DLC etc) http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/salesdata.html

Last Tomb Raider was the best selling chapter in the franchise and it sold like 5M.

Who's the nice game here?
USF4 didn't sell very well and SFxT was a complete dud.

SF fans should be happy about SFV being a real thing. Xbox fans have the right to be pissed off, but only up to a point if the only reason the game exists is due to Sony co-developing it.

The only exclusives that have left a bitter taste in the mouth have been Titanfall and TR. They were actively being made for rival platforms, only to be cancelled late on due to MS throwing money at the publisher. In the case of Titanfall, even Respawn seemed surprised when EA announced it as an Xbox exclusive.

USF4 didn't sell very well and SFxT was a complete dud.

AE and Ultra were effectively DLC packs that also got expensive retail releases. Capcom has milked the SFIV cow a bit too hard for all but the most ardent fighting fans. I don't think you can infer how popular the franchise is based on the limited sales of Ultra.

From the article you linked it sounds like upgrades weren't counted, only new copies of USF4. After 3 previous iterations it's unlikely a ton of people were left who didn't already have a previous copy so those sales might not be very indicative of the fanbase. I'll give you SFxT though.

The FGC is tight knit but I wouldn't call it niche. They're also incredibly devoted, which you can see in stuff like the Skullgirls kickstarter.

Either 'XBox and PC Exclusive' or 'XBOne and PC Exclusive.'

Seems a bit awkward, like, if you're announcing the game at a conference or something it's weird to say "coming EXCLUSIVELY to Xbox One and PC". "Console exclusive" just means "when it comes to consoles it's only available here".

Well just like Tomb Raider this seems like one of those "Paying for a game NOT to be on a system" type of deals, which is a shame.

It's has probably already been discussed but is there a chance one of the inevitable 20 other version this game will get will come to X1?

I really hate the term 'console exclusive.' It should mean a game that's exclusively on consoles and not on PC. Eg: Destiny.

As I see it:

This is a "console exclusive": The game is only on consoles and not PC/Mac/Linux

This is a "Ps4 console exclusive": Only console that has the game but it will be on PC/Mac/Linux

This is a "Ps4 exclusive": Only on Ps4

As has been said multiple times before, it looks like Sony helped pay for development for SFV. So no.

There's nothing that says the ultra turbo edition can't be on the Xbox One. With Titanfall, Miceoosft went on to make sure that didn't happen. Sony hasn't said anything other than the base game is console exclusive.

"Street Fighter 5 will be built from the ground up for PlayStation, We partnered with Capcom on the development of Street Fighter 5, we're working together to make Street Fighter the ideal game for console."

See this post:
Those waiting for Ultra SFV on X1.
Don't

BruceLeeRoy is in the know regarding Sony related stuff, he has proven himself reliable in the past so I'm taking his word for it. He's one of those non bs insiders who tend to get legit information.

No, it's like DR3, a game that needed the financial input and support of the platform holder to ever see the light of day. Likewise, Sony themselves are porting USFIV to PS4, as Capcom didn't have the resources to make next gen ports.

If Sony is creating assets and such I highly doubt any version comes to XBO. If Sony is just footing the build and sending people to help with development but it's all Capcom work then there's a chance.

Titanfall was being developed for other consoles, Microsoft bought it's exclusivity. SFV wouldn't be a thing with Sony's input and is being built with Sony in mind so it's very unlikely anything with it's name will end up on competing platforms any time soon.

Kinda shocked its exclusive. I have a few buddies not very pleased, lol. I just hope there is a good stick for ps4 I can buy. Very excited!

USF4 didn't sell very well and SFxT was a complete dud.

This 500,000 figure accounts for the retail editions of the game as well as "full-game download" editions, which appears to imply that the digital upgrade editions of USF4 that came out in June for PS3 and X360 were not included in the tally.

Why would people rebuy the whole game when they can just download the update? Seems they are only accounting for the full version of the game. If so, those are pretty good numbers seeing as how the majority would probably be people who didn't have a copy of the base game.

Sony was being criticized for not having enough exclusive content. This addresses that somewhat. If there was no PC version,it would be better for them. Me personally, I think it helps to justify my purchase even though I own all the systems anyways. It does help to define the system somewhat and brings in a crowd to the platform with tastes similar to my own. Too bad SF has always been bigger in the west than in japan. It helps in Japan somewhat still. Lets see becomes of KOF.LOL

Even if you can't, the Skullgirls team are working drivers that would make ps3 sticks work on ps4, which they plan to release for free.

This exemplifies the horrible stockholm sydrom weird stuff that happens with console exclusivity. Having to justify a purchase.... etc

What? I spoke objectively about them as a business and spoke to my own situation. Not everything is fanboyism. You can be normal and still want validation that your money wasn't wasted. Its not like I don't own all the consoles when typing that.

October 2015 release? Maybe, March 2016 at the latest?

ok i'm just dreaming. sorry guys

Someone mentioned there wasn't a big gap between SF4's announcement and release. Considering the pedigree working on this fall 2015 might not be out of the question. Ono also said the press will want to be present for Capcom Cup so we might see something more substantial there.

As has been said multiple times before, it looks like Sony helped pay for development for SFV. So no.
Plus, Ono said that not having MS involved allowed them to do cross-platform play for PS4 and PC. It's in the OP, actually.

"What’s even bigger news is that our partnership with Sony will result in SFV having cross-platform play, which will in turn unite our Street Fighter fans into one grand player base."

That is good but it is clear that Capcom is really hurting to fund it's projects on it's own.

I think what really matters here in terms of the business situation is what Capcom was willing to do with Street Fighter.

Ono had to campaign for years to even get SF4 off the ground because after 3S Capcom legitimately thought the franchise was dead. And some people from Capcom made similar comments in regards to the future possibility of SFV, suggesting it would be another several years until we saw it. Even if SF4 has sold decently, I'm thinking it just didn't meet Capcom's expectations, or at least Capcom's needs for sequel/franchise material. I really do think Capcom isn't as devoted to SF as it is to Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, because those two franchises undoubtedly make it more money. Maybe Capcom could afford to do SFV by itself, but just isn't willing to. A while ago didn't they say they wouldn't do sequels for anything that sold less than 2 million?

Capcom just has different priorities, they blew all their profits from MH4 to revamp their mobile division.

Seems they are trying to lower risk on the console side as much as possible and collaborations are their solution.

They have a ton of great IPs so first parties would be more than glad to partner up. Not to mention PS4+PC is a pretty damn safe bet for this gen.

This as well. We're talking about the company that's bringing back Breath of Fire as a mobile game.

Nintendo needs to step the fuck up and fund new Mega Man games. Nintendo's already pretty much the only company that's acknowledged Mega Man at all in the last 12 months.

Well, yes, and that's sorta the point. There are lots of reasons for Ono to take his game to PS4. People keep focusing on one specific aspect and saying, "Well, that one thing isn't a good enough reason," but they lose sight of the fact that there are several factors at play here. If one of the reasons given for exclusivity was "insufficient," what about all of them taken together?

Sorry, but I'm still a little confused and don't know if the issue has been cleared up.

I understand that SF5 is only for PS4 and PC. Now does that extend to any title? Is it still exclusive if there is a Super or Ultra version?

The current rumor is that there will not be a Super or Ultra version and any updates will be done through patches.

But it's Capcom so it's easy to be skeptical.
