Pretty bummed that developers still haven't gotten hair right

Pretty bummed that developers still haven't gotten hair right

Tomb Raider Definitive was close.

Or at least closer than we've ever been before.

At least Gerlat hair is white now :p

but yeah Gerlat and other characters hair look awful here, maybe they should just use Nvidia hairworks (or tressFx) or even something like what was used in Alice. as for developers in general, well Unity got a great looking hair also it don't move that well but look good.

Unity hair actually moves well. You see it best on Pierre during the
prison escape
.

I think Unity has the best cutscene hair for sure though. Elise's hair is the most convincing I've seen in a release yet.

I'd give best moving hair to the Definitive Edition updated Lara Croft TressFX.

This used to be a visual beast but the delays have let other games catch up. AC Unity's lighting looks far more dynamic and gives a lot of depth to scenes. These shots look flat by comparison.

The delays were indicative of the state of the game and constant crunching led to this.

I want to clarify a few things about this shots folks.

Thing is, i saw one of the earlier Witcher 3 builds in 2013 behind the closed doors at Igromir Expo in Moscow. And it clearly looked even then, with 2 crashes during the demo/ In fact it looked a hell lot better. The early material wasn't any setup or, as you would say, fake. They've just simply overpromised.

Let me explain. The demo we saw was stable 30FPS with some dips, decent drawing distance (lot better than on this pics) and with much prettier lighting model. The picture on early stages were more crisp and colorful. And i'm not even talking about textures (characters/ground) that is downgraded in current state so heavily that Witcher 2 looks on par or even better. Shadow density has been clearly downgraded. This goes for shadows drawing dictance too.

Chainmail on Geralt's armor downgraded on fresh pics to a single low-res texture is awful. And from what i see they've muted the colours in the later builds, that is a shame. Build we saw was a lot more like Inquisition in terms of colour handling.

So what happened? I think optimisations happened. Our expo build was rigged to a powerful PC with 2-way SLI with top of the line GeForces. Sadly Witcher 1 and 2 was very poorly optimised upon release and this time i think CDPR just decided to take some shortcuts. Instead of expensive work with code optimisations they've simply lowered the settings.

And yes, even by console standarts after Inquisition, Second Son or Unity this pics looks flat.

That would be the definition of fake because they created false expectations that couldn't be met.

It's not just about just npc hair but fur and everything related.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-i8K5M98eME

L'oreal Wolves, I know

But it was being pointed out that the hair on characters in W3 doesn't look good. I was mentioning other open world examples with good hair and good hair systems. I think overall the technology for good hair exists in already released games and is simply not being used on the characters of W3 from what we've seen.

We don't know for sure how creatures' and characters' hair will look in W3, but it seems like at least characters are behind.

I am still curious if there are random events or a ecosystem..

Doubt it.

Though this is exactly what we need more of.

Hopefully we will see some S.T.A.L.K.E.R. like systems come into place this gen.

Also hoping Bethesda iterates on Radiant AI to make it more robust for F04 and more so, Elder Scrolls VI.

Even the CE statue has been downgraded

Doesn't look like that to me. Just differences in lighting conditions and the right one is also blurrier.

Looks like they did something to the lighting system. The tree canopies no longer cast shadows on one another.

The lighting is a bit flat in the new images, cartoonish even. It's really noticeable on the npcs.
Yup, seeing the same...

Im playing Witcher 2 now on PC for the first time, 5 hours in, pleasently surprised so far. Great graphics, combat system and intresting story. Those screenshots from Witcher 3 looks insane, really love the vivid colors, pure eyecandy. It's certainly on my most anticipated list for 2015...

I think The Witcher 2 witcher 2 hasn't aged well at all. maybe it still look ok in screenshots but in motion it look bad, and what kill it mostly for me are the stiff wooden sticks like animations and really bad random npc character models.

Frankly, the lighting doesn't really amaze me. Looks somehow flat.

Sometimes when people hype these Witcher 3 graphics I think if there's something wrong with my eyes when I feel that many already released games look better in many ways.

Anyway I'm hyped for the game itself, just not the graphics like many seem to be.

Saw the screenshots, looked for someone to point out Unity looks better and thankfully they have.

Unity is unrivaled right now, in my opinion. I just can't get over it. I'm simply willing to say Unity wins best graphics and it is a game featuring all of Paris. A place as much as a game and it looks like this:

Is that the PC version?

(Assuming all screenshots are PC). Have Unity on X1 and it only looks that great at times for me, but isn't always that consistent

They could be console screenshots and still be downsampled. That's pretty much standard industry practice.

You're going to be looking at these screenshots on a computer monitor about a foot and a half away. That level of scrutiny does not exist when you're playing games on your TV across the room. If the shots were not downsampled, you'd be complaining about how bad the image quality is (which would look fine from your couch).

That said, I was not blown away by these screenshots. The lighting seems much more flat now. Distant LOD leaves something to be desired as well.

Seems like they went for a more cartoony approach rather than the realistic look we saw early on. This guy gets it:

I mean you can call it fake, or accuse devs of tricking you and the audience, but the reality is most likely just what ShaiKhulud said.
Optimizations happen during a development cycle and you need to sacrifice graphical fidelity in order to get the game running on more machines. It's simply impossible to nail the engine 2 years in advance, especially when working an such a massive game as WItcher 3.

I wish some GAFfers would finally shake this weird downgrade mentality.

The last shot showing the characters and hair in cutscene is PS4, the rest are PC. Definitely holds up better on PC.

Yeah for obvious reasons. Damn. I have two GTX 680s SLI 2GB. I assume I can't run it max? Need to upgrade my GPU as the memory isn't enough.

People who keep saying this really need to go back and play that game. They still probably have that memory in their mind of it looking spectacular, and it did for its time, but things have moved on since then and while it is still a fair looking game, it doesn't hold a candle to what we've seen from TW3 with the recent trailer and these shots.

And TW3 is a huge, open world game, don't forget.

I'm impressed.

Something looks off on those screens but i can't tell what, I think Unity is still the better looking game on PC period.

Is there a chance those screens are from the console version ?

Every new Witcher 3 thread makes me believe more and more that anastasis guy what did post here once about the devs struggling with the game.
I've lowered my expectations for the game's graphics considerably since the first reveals and will hope they deliver on the other 2 strong aspects of the Witcher series: the writing and the story.

Looks awesome! This will be the best looking open world game when released, although I think Bloodborne will be neck and neck, given the incredible art.

Look like bullshots to me, either way all that matters to me is that it plays good, because the gameplay of the previous one was horrible.

I bet more people would be impressed if the thread title was different. As it is, its probably digging into some people's defensiveness.

Not sure if they had to do a lot to get this, but I'm sure screens like this going around on GAF make it harder to recall if the leap is as generational as people hoped:

God damn, Witcher 2 looks stunning at 4k, loving my new 980.

This was a popular shot.

funny that no matter how good a game looks, we're still getting ancient clipping issues like robes on horses lol

at least their swords and sheathes look amazing. that's another thing I hate... axes and staves magically floating on backs.

I'd take more realistic moving or equiping of weapons or armour (wearing while horseback, entering combat than prettier textures any day

either way, game still looks far better than most so it's not a complaint -- just something i wish would be a higher priority that flashy textures

I recently just bought a gaming rig, my last played PC game was Half life 2. Been a console gamer ever since. So from my standpoint it looks really good. Have some graphic enhancing mods as well(one of the reasons I invested in a gaming rig) ;-) You are right about the animations, but it havent stopped the immersive experience thus far.

It can look great in the best of times, definitely. But even those don't hold up to the best of what we've seen in these new TW3 screenshots. And I'm sure the community is going to have some seriously impressive cherry-picked downsampled screenshots of TW3 when it comes out, too, ya know?

first witcher 3 gameplay footage leak: august 2013

1.5 years later and no sign of the ps4 version. co-marketing and all, but come on. more than a year of nothing? we should get a glimpse of it tomorrow.
