Pretty bummed that developers still haven't gotten hair right
Pretty bummed that developers still haven't gotten hair right
Tomb Raider Definitive was close.
Or at least closer than we've ever been before.
At least Gerlat hair is white now
but yeah Gerlat and other characters hair look awful here, maybe they should just use Nvidia hairworks (or tressFx) or even something like what was used in Alice. as for developers in general, well Unity got a great looking hair also it don't move that well but look good.
This used to be a visual beast but the delays have let other games catch up. AC Unity's lighting looks far more dynamic and gives a lot of depth to scenes. These shots look flat by comparison.
Unity hair actually moves well. You see it best on Pierre during the.prison escape
I think Unity has the best cutscene hair for sure though. Elise's hair is the most convincing I've seen in a release yet.
I want to clarify a few things about this shots folks.
Thing is, i saw one of the earlier Witcher 3 builds in 2013 behind the closed doors at Igromir Expo in Moscow. And it clearly looked even then, with 2 crashes during the demo/ In fact it looked a hell lot better. The early material wasn't any setup or, as you would say, fake. They've just simply overpromised.
Let me explain. The demo we saw was stable 30FPS with some dips, decent drawing distance (lot better than on this pics) and with much prettier lighting model. The picture on early stages were more crisp and colorful. And i'm not even talking about textures (characters/ground) that is downgraded in current state so heavily that Witcher 2 looks on par or even better. Shadow density has been clearly downgraded. This goes for shadows drawing dictance too.
Chainmail on Geralt's armor downgraded on fresh pics to a single low-res texture is awful. And from what i see they've muted the colours in the later builds, that is a shame. Build we saw was a lot more like Inquisition in terms of colour handling.
So what happened? I think optimisations happened. Our expo build was rigged to a powerful PC with 2-way SLI with top of the line GeForces. Sadly Witcher 1 and 2 was very poorly optimised upon release and this time i think CDPR just decided to take some shortcuts. Instead of expensive work with code optimisations they've simply lowered the settings.
And yes, even by console standarts after Inquisition, Second Son or Unity this pics looks flat.
It's not just about just npc hair but fur and everything related.

I am still curious if there are random events or a ecosystem..
Doesn't look like that to me. Just differences in lighting conditions and the right one is also blurrier.Even the CE statue has been downgraded
Yup, seeing the same...Looks like they did something to the lighting system. The tree canopies no longer cast shadows on one another.
The lighting is a bit flat in the new images, cartoonish even. It's really noticeable on the npcs.
Well, true-trueThat would be the definition of fake because they created false expectations that couldn't be met.
Im playing Witcher 2 now on PC for the first time, 5 hours in, pleasently surprised so far. Great graphics, combat system and intresting story. Those screenshots from Witcher 3 looks insane, really love the vivid colors, pure eyecandy. It's certainly on my most anticipated list for 2015...
Saw the screenshots, looked for someone to point out Unity looks better and thankfully they have.
Unity is unrivaled right now, in my opinion. I just can't get over it. I'm simply willing to say Unity wins best graphics and it is a game featuring all of Paris. A place as much as a game and it looks like this:

Is that the PC version?
(Assuming all screenshots are PC). Have Unity on X1 and it only looks that great at times for me, but isn't always that consistent
The last shot showing the characters and hair in cutscene is PS4, the rest are PC. Definitely holds up better on PC.
Glad to see developers have learned from the recent exposure about poor female representation in their games, this looks very tasteful.
People who keep saying this really need to go back and play that game. They still probably have that memory in their mind of it looking spectacular, and it did for its time, but things have moved on since then and while it is still a fair looking game, it doesn't hold a candle to what we've seen from TW3 with the recent trailer and these shots.is downgraded in current state so heavily that Witcher 2 looks on par or even better.
No way in hell.Is there a chance those screens are from the console version ?
The last time they released new screenshots they said their new renderer wasn't ready - maybe this is also true from these new shots?Looks like they did something to the lighting system. The tree canopies no longer cast shadows on one another.
I bet more people would be impressed if the thread title was different. As it is, its probably digging into some people's defensiveness.

And TW3 is a huge, open world game, don't forget.
I'm impressed.
God damn, Witcher 2 looks stunning at 4k, loving my new 980.

I think The Witcher 2 witcher 2 hasn't aged well at all. maybe it still look ok in screenshots but in motion it look bad, and what kill it mostly for me are the stiff wooden sticks like animations and really bad random npc character models.
Doubt it, they look like super down sampled shots. Unless they purposely set the graphics down to medium or something, even then it would still be PC screens. Is there a chance those screens are from the console version ?
New one?
It can look great in the best of times, definitely. But even those don't hold up to the best of what we've seen in these new TW3 screenshots. And I'm sure the community is going to have some seriously impressive cherry-picked downsampled screenshots of TW3 when it comes out, too, ya know? Not sure if they had to do a lot to get this, but I'm sure screens like this going around on GAF make it harder to recall if the leap is as generational as people hoped:
Really? I thought both sides of Act 2 were by far the best parts of the game. The dropped of cliff after Act 1 in Witcher 2.
Hope Witcher 3 doesn't become the next crysis. Crysis 1 had amazing gameplay but people only talked about its graphics
