This is awesome news :)

This is an actual sequel, and much better than a remaster or what have you.

If they had just put a 2 at the end of it I think the reactions in this thread would look a lot different

I'm emotional right now. This is like the only IP I care about in Capcom and my favorite action-rpg combat wise. So much potential. I don't trust Capcom to bring it to the West until Deep Down gets a chance to sign and no way in hell is Sony helping in bringing it over.

Abandon all hope ye who Woof here.

Why are people so sure that Sony won't bring it to the west, when it was said by Capcom that they are helping with DDO???

Might not be by SCE or WWS, but SOE is publishing Dragon's Prophet in NA (Korean F2P mmo), and they are specializing more and more in F2P titles that are multi-platform (PS4/ PC) like DCUO and soon H1Z1 and Planetside 2.

It's not guanranteed by any means, but it sounds pretty logical to me to bring it to NA/ EU to maximize revenue, SPECIALLY for a F2P.

i'm loving the fact that there is a new DD game... but it's free to play... I remember how annoying it was to get the right lvl.3 weapons and armour, but now it would be hell. Even worse, rarifying weapons might be almost impossible without ponying up some cash.

I'd like to see a trailer but this genre is not for me.
I'm mostly a single player gamer, I like online co-ops when they make sense in the particular game....but if Capcom thinks their future is free to play online games with microtransactions...emmm I doubt I'll buy their games anymore.

just release Dark Arisen on PC with better textures and I won't care what F2P atrocity Capcom is doing with an otherwise amazing concept.

Its as we suspected. Capcom are even more cautious now with AAA development than ever before. So we just get less games, or this kind of thing unless they are funded and supported by Sony or MS..

DRAGON'S DOGMA
Aren't FTP games proned to tanking? They aren't easy to do well.

I'm so conflicted about this :\ I'm not a fan of online-only games as I'm more of a single-player RPG guy, but I also adored my time with Dragon's Dogma and would love to see Capcom do something that moves the IP forward. Ugh... like all things, time will tell if this was a smart move or not. F2P is a really unfortunate move though, imo.

I'll play it with you and we can never talk to each other and pretend we are just really good NPCs.

Development started with the basic desire of taking Dragon’s Dogma and making it playable in an online environment.

The game couldn’t be made in tandem with Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen and was therefore pushed back.

Capcom contemplated a monthly fee, but chose freeo-to-play in the end in an attempt to get more players to try it out.

Though paid items are present, the game will still feel like a proper Dragon’s Dogma game.

The story is completely new and there are no character connections. (Editor’s note: We take it this means no character connections to the previous game.)

The game world will initially be the size of what players have come to expect from previous games, but will expand over time to be three times larger in scope.

Parties are formed in the lobby, after which players depart for the field.

An effort has been made to emphasize the strengths and traits of individual classes, but it’s not balanced so strictly that players need to be super meticulous about party makeup.

Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono also adds that the game’s development is benefiting from the cooperation of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Is it confirmed Sony are assisting capcom with this game?
Is that what we call "money hats" now?
I don't really care ththough I have both consoles, so if it's good I will be playing it anyway. But wow am I the only one witnessing some heavy case of double standards here? If this game was a WiiU or Xbox One exclusive the whole internet would be rioting.

A little surprised by such a negative reaction to this. Well, I understand the F2P bit I guess. Aside from that though, this is a new Dragon's Dogma with a new story, areas, and you now have other people playing with you, which is what I saw a lot of people saying would be good to have a while back reading the GAF threads. It's not the same thing as the original obviously (since that was an offline RPG), and more of an evolution, but I got the feeling from GAF impressions, that most people loved the combat, exploration, and monster fighting aspect of the game rather than anything else like the story.

If they deliver on that aspect, ignoring the F2P, would this really be that bad for fans?

Don't let the negative reaction throw you too much. We've got no footage at the moment. I'm actually kind of interested, depending on how they handle the F2P and how the overall game world looks. I always thought Dragon's Dogma had potential, I just hated the pawn system (give me a real party) and moreover I hated the washed out look the colors had. If they fix the latter (or at least give me a next-gen coat of paint), and I can ignore the former, then they could get some money out of me easily.

Sure, if you want to ignore Capcom's financial status and everything they've done in the last year and a half.
So, to recap on Capcom:

1.) Resident Evil Revelations 2 is a cross-gen digital episodic game with microtransactions.
2.) Their star new IP - Deep Down - is an f2p game with randomly generated dungeons.
3.) The return of Dragon's Dogma is an f2p online game that's cross-gen between PS3/PS4/PC.
4.) Street Fighter V is rumored to be a base game with a League of Legends style business model after that.
5.) Breath of Fire 6 is a phone/tablet/PC MMO type game.
Let's not forget that MS helped them fund Dead Rising 3 and Sony is funding the USF4 PS4 port.

I doubt it. DD already implemented online functionality as a foundation for their single-player experience - we already know a DD game is going to be "online". That's a given.

It's what putting "online" is a game's title implies nowadays. F2P, microtransactions, etc. And what did we get? People are right to be wary. That said I want this to be good. If they can limit microtransactions to cosmetic stuff I'd be fine with it. I just highly doubt that'll be the case.

Yeah that's basically how I feel. I always thought multiplayer would be an improvement for Dragon's Dogma, so if the rest stays the same or improves (combat, world, boss fights etc) then it will be fantastic.

I'd obviously prefer it be a $60 title though, I'm very concerned about what the F2P is going to mean for the game design.

That seems fine overall to be honest. They've just become astonishingly risk averse since they notice their brands are largely going no where but down and they're unable to create any new ones.

Let's not forget that MS helped them fund Dead Rising 3 and Sony is funding the USF4 PS4 port.

Yeah, but those felt more like them dealing with the left over nature of their old business more than part of a new strategy.

Like I don't think they would have made Dead Rising 3 if the question came up today. At least, not as it was.

GOOD LORD. This game had such a great feel, it was deceivingly ' generic fantasy' on the surface but such great combat and much of it was surprisingly memorable. Really excited for more info from this!

I'm in the same boat as you, I don't know how to feel about this whole thing.

Oh baby. Hope there is more variety in the locations now and please for the love of everything that is holy please make the Warrior class an actual warrior. Getting out damaged by an assassin -___-

I for one am fucking PUMPED for this, heck I might dust off my 360 that hasn't even been turned on for over a year, just to give bitterblack a quick run through.

Day/Night cycle was incredible. Night time actually meant something.

When I played the demo, I was blown the fuck away at how the griffin would just disappear into the night sky; it was exhilarating .

Please, Capcom, can I have some more?

Dark Arisen set the bar so high for other action RPGs. Dammit, to plug in my XBOX360 again....

This.. has the potential to be really incredible if it is indeed just like an online version of Dragons Dogma. Holy poop. This could be amazing. :0

Man Capcom better not pull a Sega. This game needs to be released outside Japan.

Its supposed to be crossplay between platforms like FFXIV right?

Dragon's Dogma didn't support online. The pawn system was online, but there was no player to player interactions.

And the "online" suffix doesn't mean free-to-play inherently. Online typically entails that the game is persistent or massive multiplayer in scope, it suggests a design focus. In this case, it happens to be free to play but the only alternative to an MMO-style game is subscription based, which they considered but wisely nixed.

This is comparable to Elder Scrolls Online, yeah, but the problem with Elder Scrolls Online wasn't its title. Elder Scrolls Online was a great concept, but bad execution and business model. Dragon's Dogma Online is a great idea, too, and it's already got a smarter business model.

It's weird to stigmatize the word. It has no bearing on the quality of product, or the business model.

Sigh. I'm not a fan of most F2P games, they tend to feel cheap or exploitative, but what concerns me most is whether or not the "MMO" aspects are going to make the combat any less satisfying.

Still, the idea of Dragon's Dogma co-op sounds fun.

I really hope night time is still awesome. Please don't lose the core of Dragon's Dogma.

Three years from now, I want to be able to look back on Dragon's Dogma, Dark Arisen, and Online, and say those sacred words.

"They're masterworks all, you cunt"

I don't know if the core multiplayer will be MMO style questing with other players, but I hope there's a "horde" mode, just dump the players into an arena like the Everfall and fight waves of monsters and bosses. That would have been perfect for the first game.

Well, if it doesn't feel like a F2P game, then I'm game. Always kept my eye on this series, especially after playing the demo.

I really got this PSO2 vibe, reading the descriptions. Minus the premium service (optional subscription) though, which is a very good thing. I hope this'll be a good F2P model.
PSO2 is doing great in Japan with constant updates.

God's had his chance.
Yup. Almost 3xactly what I was guessing in a best case sense... DD with your pawns replaced by other players.

Retains the gameplay? Monsters enrage? 8 man dungeons?

Bought. BOUGHT SO HARD!
