I'd love to hear the differences between "Troubled Childhood", "Lone Survivor", and "Cruel Fate".

"Troubled Childhood" definitely gives you extra END. Iirc, "Lone Survivor" and "Cruel Fate" give you a boost in firearms and alchemy, respectively.

I think he is still trolling. Or probably he was trolling and now he's backtracking from trolling. The original context was that he had said that after dark souls he had moved on to working on something more lighthearted. That's where Bloodborne came from.

I don't think he's trolling. Seems like he would genuinely like to do something more lighthearted (not hard after Souls and Bloodborne!) I don't think he ever explicitly said that he would do something more lighthearted right after DS.

I think I've seen a footage somewhere that said to stagger Cleric Beast you need to shoot its head with a lot bullets, and that's how the player from footage able to pull his critical attack. I hope it's not like that though since spamming silver bullet just to stagger sounds very shitty, even moreso for players who picked bunderbluss.

Maybe, but the game isn't too stingy with Silver Bullet drops.
Anyway, I think the player/video that was spamming was just not used to it, as I'm pretty sure you can stagger the Cleric Beast by shooting at the last moment, just like other enemies (except the risk/reward is much greater with bosses, obviously).

I understand you probably can't say too much, but given what you've played of the game how do you feel it compares to Demons/Dakr/Dark 2?

Just wanna chime in here; I'm convinced you won't be disappointed if you enjoyed the Souls games. General movement feels kinda like Dark, in that it's weighty. Running and jumping feel a little more "grounded" if you're coming straight off DS2.

I never really understood the "fast combat" references to Demon's. My guess is that was always just journalist talk to get Sony fans excited. The only reason Demon's feels "fast" is because the combat isn't as tight as Dark, and combined with the slightly floaty movement the whole thing feels more arcadey. The combat in BB is entirely it's own thing, while still familiar enough to get to grips with.

Cleric Beast
staggers when his head takes a certain amount of gun damage. After you riposte him, you have to wait for him to regenerate his head so you can repeat the process. Trust me, I tried to parry his attacks every which way at PSX and he wasn't having it. I only learned this strategy by watching an alpha playthrough on Youtube after the fact.

Oh okay, fair play! Thanks for the correction.
Save your firebombs and bullets then, folks!

Actually, I like that there are potentially these two different playstyles for dealing with it.
Stock up on bullets and upgrade your gun to stagger, or invest in Arcane in order to deal more damage with fire-based items and other technological wonders. Seems like a good taste of things to come, especially seeing as stats like Arcane give firebombs and the like more validity in the longrun.

Also forces an interesting choice of firearms at the beginning. The pistol is much better against the Cleric Beast since it maintains more damage over distances, but in other encounters, the close range power of the blunderbuss might be more effective.

Is anyone here planning on playing this offline? Is there anything in Bloodborne that's gonna make me really miss being connected online? I liked the notes and white spirits in the other Souls games but the pvp always seems really unablanced/mediocre to me so I never bothered much.

Just wondering if it's worth dishing out extra money for PS+ for this one game when I barely ever play my console.

Like all souls games, I presume this can played entirely offline.

I always thought that spamming bullet to Cleric Beast's head would be cheap, but with some more think through I thought that was a quite brilliant design. You could choose to conserve bullets and do it the conventional way by hitting him, or perhaps shelled out more bullets so you can finish him quickly. Plus to that, Cleric Beast is quite agile and if you don't time your shot correctly you could hit his chest or even worse missed your shot, wasting precious quicksilver bullet in the process.

Like every Souls game, I think playing offline is pretty doable. It's just the game designed around Share functionality just as much Demon's Souls with online connectivity, so you'll probably missed important part or feel of the game.

Can you give us anything else on the game? Just a morsel of information?

I'm so hungry for this game that anything will help!

I understand you probably can't say too much, but given what you've played of the game how do you feel it compares to Demons/Dakr/Dark 2?

Sorry I only clarified the bit about the video because it's just tangential info that doesn't give anything about the game away, and I'm trying to stay unspoiled myself until I get my own copy. However from what I've played it sits right alongside Demon's and DS in that pantheon, though there are key differences in gameplay.
I may get to do some Chalice dungeon streaming pre-release, depending on what the final word is. Trying not to push too hard on that, as you can imagine the guys working on the game are in mega crunch mode at the moment.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

Aaaand done. March is going to be a tough fucking month... bought the following:

Bloodborne
Bloodborne Collector's Edition
Bloodborne Nightmare Edition
Bloodborne Collector's Edition Strategy Guide

550 + 1500 + 600 + 950 = 3600 kronor... exchanged to dollars, 428 dollars. Not that bad compared to Dark Souls (1), I guess!

Just had a baby... This doesn't have pausing does it? Will survive... But would be nice!

Congrats! And no, not traditional pausing.
I imagine Menu -> Quit game saves your progress exactly where you were were, and you just need to load your character again. Like the Souls games.

I tried playing some of the Souls games offline once.... and it didn't feel like I was playing a Souls game at all. I'd never consider doing that with Bloodborne, which looks to have an even bigger emphasis on online interactions (thus, the less it'll feel like it's meant to be when played offline).

I was planning on playing Bloodborne offline, too. (Finicky internet.) The other Souls games have always been a fantastic single-player experience, and I'm hoping Bloodborne is fairly similar. Playing alone gives it that really old school Zelda vibe - no one is coming to help you, and pretty much every single thing in the game wants you dead. There's no relief, barely any respite, and a brutal difficulty curve. I know offline changes the intended feel of the game, but it has such a fantastic, unique atmosphere when it's just you.

I managed to play DK2 for a bit online, and whilst I enjoyed reading people's messages, there was too much lag for summoning/invasions so I stopped bothering.

Bloodborne uses chromatic aberration?
Ya know, I suspected that before, but I went and took a couple direct shots of my own and it definitely looks to have it yes. Explains that slightly blurry look this game has. WHY?

And I don't know if I'm imagining it, but it seems the CA gets worse the farther to the sides of the screen you get.

I can't find anything clear on the internet, but as far as I know Sony deals with it like this:
- "Organized" Online interactions require PS+. Something like Battlefield MP, for example
- "Random" Multiplayer interactions do not require PS+. Think Watchdogs invasions.

So I would assume you'd be able to read the notes and stuff at least, maybe even summon/be summoned. I just looked it up on PS Store and it doesn't specify to require PS+ for online interactions at all. For comparison BF: Hardline has it.

TL;DR - You should be ok.

The german and the UK store list the PS Plus requirement for online mutliplayer.

"Network Players 2-5 - Full game requires PlayStation®Plus membership to access online multiplayer"

God damn, this game better be worth all the expenses.

so Best Buy is not getting the collector's edition for in-store pickup and it costs like $20 extra for release day delivery..... argh. looks like this'll be the first 'normal' edition Souls game I get

This is what I plan on doing...loved Souls coop/pvp but I am not really interested in paying for online play at all, much less for one game.

Disapponting, it really is a horrible effect, pissed me off when I saw it in Life Is Strange too. I don't understand how game designers can sit there and think "yeah, that's a good effect", it shows a lack of taste and a lack of consideration for players wondering if their eyes are tired because everything seems blurry.

I won't be buying this at release, maybe they'll add an option to turn that shit off in a patch, if enough people complain.

Please complain.

If you didn't see the posts above -- thebookdepository has it available for preorder, free shipping worldwide.
Cheers. Do you have a direct link? I tried the website but I can't seem to find it.

According to ENB's latest update, it's only sold through Amazon.

I think Amazon only is for the US, FuturePress is based in Germany so they probably distribute it more in Europe.

Yea, with a camera. But it makes no sense in a video game unless it has eye tracking or something.

There's no point having chromatic aberration unless you're trying to imitate a camera.

The 'term' photorealism is often a misnomer when used in discussion of games, but CA is among the genuine examples of photorealism games demonstrate. Something like bokeh is the same. There's no point having bokeh, other than to imitate a mechanical lens.

Can't wait for this. I really hope this game doesn't have any FPS problems. The graphics don't really seem impressive so I'll be disappointed if it isn't locked at 30fps. Shame they couldn't get 60fps tbh

Considering the facts that

Demon's ran at below 30fps from time to time
Dark Souls had Blighttown
Dark Souls 2 ran like poo on the PS3,

I wouldn't wager a single dime that Bloodborne is going to run at 30fps locked throughout the whole game.

FromSoft knows their game design and art design, but not the tech. Let's hope that Japan Studio has been optimizing things this time.

The CA is one thing i really dislike about the look of the game. I usually won't spend a penny on a game that forces it on me, i hate the effect that much.

Except that depth of field in photography is *desirable*. That's why it looks great in video games.

Chromatic aberration in photography is *undesirable*. That's why it looks bad in video games.

I think the attitude of 'trying to simulate a real camera' is the wrong way to go about it. They should take the good aspects of photography and add it to games, but the idea isn't to perfectly simulate a camera with all its pros and cons. Its to take some cool looking effects and incorporate them into your visual design.

Wait, you actually bought that? ﴾͡๏̯͡๏﴿

Plenty of people are buying it. It's the ultimate item for the fan since it's an awesome (exclusive and quite rare) collector's item.
