I definitely agree that it is a poor objective indicator, but it is a relatively good indicator if you're uncertain.

Dishonored having great reviews all around made me want it, and the Metacritic solidified that fact. I had no interest in it before and loved it.

If this gets good reviews I'll buy it, but if it doesn't I won't. That isn't because I definitely won't like it, but rather that I have too much to play and want to prioritise great games.
I'm not discounting reviews as being useful as a guide, just not the be all end all of quality like they're often treated.

I'd like to actually know how the Lychan combat works. I hope it's not just QTE's.
It's not. You still shoot them like other enemies. We've just only seen snippets of it because RaD seems to want to keep the lycans mostly under wraps.

this thread is a chrome killer ..

EDIT:

On lycan combat. I would be very surprised if its qte's simply based on the fact that rad developed the gow games. They must have learnt enough from that about melee combat mechanics to try and implements something beyond simple qtes. Plus doesnt make sense for them to tease it if its going to be qte's given the backlash the game has already gotten for qtes.

OFF topic response to person mentioning review scores influencing purchasing

guess it comes with the territory of 60 dollar purchases. If I had a lot of money yeah sure I would try a lot more games. But if time/money restrict me to 2-3 games a year I don't see anything wrong with looking for those 1-2 games a year which do reach 90+.

Of course, I have exceptions to this (eg nd games I just mostly blind buy, but then again im not sure how much of an exception that is since they havent put out a sub 90 metacritic in ages). If a year goes without many 90+ (eg last year) I'll consider high 80 scoring ones.

My reasoning behind this is simple. I'm not particular about any particular play style (eg rpg, over world, platformer, cinematic/linear etc) so if lots of ppl seem to agree its a good game i'll give it a shot and i set my bar on general review consensus.

Also there is also scientific evidence of the wisdom of crowds its the reason things like metacritic work in general someone reviews agood game badly someone else will review it super well on average crown consensus is a good barometer.

Finally when it comes to particular types of games i really like. These are very different and particular eg cs,dota. I already know what i'm looking for in these and don't need reviews to guide me. For example irrespective of what metacritic cs go has its a top game for me and finally a decent successor to 1.6 inspite of source scoring higher i still feel source is shit. On these I judge myself . On basically everything else I go by reviews. It's just what I am willing to spend time and money on.

Now one valid alternative questions could be why not go on impressions? Then what do I turn to ? User reviews those are badly scewed by so many random things (exclusivity, volvo diretide etc).

What I think could be a good alternative is if we had a gaf conensus score for each game. Yeah that's something I would be willing to consider as an alternative to metacritic but like I said conensus of review scores has served me well in the past so I don't see much of a reason to think of new things.

ON topic

This game looks amazing. Am seriously considering buying it.

I like the idea of a gaf consensus score a lot.

We could have a poll with two options Like or Dislike (Similar to youtube videos) and get the consensus's approval rating from there.

The poll could either be in the first OT or the review thread

So far we've seen quite a mixture, from QTE, to melee combat, to regular shooting. I'd imagine they will design the scenearios so we can take them on in a number of ways. Presumably the encounter they showed off way back, was one of the first times you fight an Eldar Lycan in the game. It certainly felt like that based on the way it was set up.

This.. Chrome has gone a week behind as I type now.

Also too much spoiler gifs in this now, that Lycan/gollum gif is the end for me now as too much spoiler risk. I am out and going dark now till my copy lands (hopefully 18th)!

Enjoy the game Gaf!

so lets say another week or so before the mom and pop stores sell this to someone early. Cant wait. If nothing else this game will produce gif's to last us till the year end big hitters (uc4 etc) hit. And even then im not convinced the graphics on this will be surpassed.

I think the more recent trailer had more spoilers.
I'm not worried about story spoilers from it, I know what it is. It's just that I'm very much looking forward to the quiet moments in this game where you can just walk around and take in the visuals and setting. Don't want to see much of that stuff before I have the game in my console.

Looks pretty beautiful. Will buy if the game gets at least 2 oscars and a grammy nod.

I couldn't agree more, I've enjoyed plenty of games that are mediocre based on Metacritic.

Damn at the GIF, this game continues ot stun me.

Do NOT watch his third video lol. Spoilers ahoy! Even I tuned out. Get the feeling they may have held quite a few things close to their chest on this one.

So I see more spoilers coming in this thread. It's time to bail out I guess.

Anw, to those who watched them, what happened in those videos? :p

That GIF in the OP.The gun looks very similar to a Mossin Nagant. I've spent time with a Mossin and the reload process in real life is 100% on the mark with the GIF! Just... JAW DROPPING!
