Ready at Dawn responds to "concern" over The Order: 1886 campaign length

I understand people wanting 700 hours of gameplay in their $60 game, that's fine. Personally, i would rather have a tight 4-8 hour story that's engaging and good then a 20+ hour game that i want to be over 1-2 hours in. Infamous Second Son is a perfect example of a game that was 10 hours too long.

What i don't get and will never understand is this notion of "IF ITS NOT 234324 HOURS IT SHOULDN'T BE $60" bullshit, it's a AAA title. It's longer then 3 standard 90 minute movies which would cost you $60 if you bought them day of release on blu-ray.

This is the argument that drives me insane. This is not either or. This is a third person shooter, right? You ever play RE4? RE5? Dead Space 1 or 2? Uncharted 2? Last of Us? Are you saying that they're de facto worse because they have long campaigns?

Important to note though.

- Guy ignores every single additional item, viewable and collectible, even if the button prompt is right in front of him.
- Does basically no exposition or exploration, partly as a result of the above.
- Is playing on either Easy or Normal.

It would be interesting if someone did do a full analysis of cut scenes, because I think his 3 hour figure is likely inaccurate based on the video footage. Might be hard to gauge from just video though given a few are interactive.

Either way it's probably not the best barometer, though I do agree it has validity and is an example of how some people may experience the game.

He played on Normal. I counted somewhere around 100-120 minutes of cutscenes and somewhere between 30-60 minutes of QTE scenes with the rest being in control of the character so it's a little different than the times he provided.

Didn't break the videos down to the second or even minute but I did skim every video yesterday trying to get a general idea of the ratio so take it for what it's worth.

What's more likely?

YouTuber goes on massive conspiracy to doctor the length of a game despite full video of his playthrough.

Game Developer releases a 5-7 hour, highly polished single-player experience, while touting it as a the next generation of action.

I hadn't watched any of the footage because I didn't want to spoil the game for myself. It seems like enough people have watched it that it's valid.

I'll find out if I enjoy it on Friday I guess.

I paid approximately $762 for 3 hours in an Audi R8 v10 around a track here in Dubai last year. That's 4.2 dollars per minute. No multiplayer, no reply value, nothing to show for it in the end but I loved every second of it and would do it again, even for a higher price.

I'm driving anti-consumerism in a big way. Come at me GAF.

To everyone saying they prefer a 5 hour GOOD experience instead of something 10 hours but with 'filler'.

Why not just make a 10 hour GOOD experience.

I don't remember the last time a 10 hour single player game got so much heat. Captain Toad didn't get close to this much heat but maybe that's because it was a $40 dollar game, same with Infamous Second Son and Ryse.

Does every game of the same genre need to be the same now? What's wrong with cut scenes now? Everyone knew since day 1 the game would be heavy on cut scenes.

Doesn't make it any less a bad game for it.

Like I said though, its the proportion of cut-scenes to gameplay that I'm talking about.

The problem is that, unless I go out and buy it, I won't really get an accurate assessment of how good or bad the game is until a couple of months down the line when the dust has settled. People seem way too invested in the game at this point. I will certainly be taking some people's impressions with a huge pinch of salt.

The game is actually 5 hours of mashing x and triangle to make Galahad twirl his mustache. Add an hour or two depending on how many times you screw up the Guitar Hero like timing that is required.

I for one can't wait for Friday to pick it up. I'll buy it from Best Buy for $47.99, beat it and if I want to sell it back, BB will most likely give me $40+ for it. Yeah I'm ok with that. But I may end up loving it and just keep it.

Because the production values of the order seem extremely high. Ten hours of good experience may well be impossible without further delays and even more money.

I'm buying this at launch and I don't care if I'm done in five hours. I can't wait.

Yeah GCU shining bright on this game is my suspicion as well.

So are we back to claiming GAFers are lying? If you don't buy the longer outlier that's fine, there's still the GAF average instead.

I don't know how the rest plays out, but I watched the first bit and that guy was walking around everywhere. Not reading prompts and lore isn't going to subtract nearly 10 hours from your playtime, nor is "looking in every nook and cranny". Exactly how much drinking in of atmosphere is someone doing for those kinds of playtimes?

The entire game is documented on video at five and a half hours, with over 50% cutscenes apparently, and this persons estimates are questioned and not the 14 hour ones? What kind of sense does that make?

Toad got plenty of flack for its length despite being 20$ cheaper, and that game had side content on top of its "campaign".

Oh sorry, I didn't mean people should watch the videos. I thought people might be interested in the video lengths of the playlist.
I read about these vids. But it all depends on how you play.
But the cutscene - playtime ratio sounds horrible. Maybe it's awesome though...

this is indeed concerning, i really hope the Gameplay is good enough to justify the length. im gonna have to see for myself come friday (sorta good thing i getting it for 30 bucks)

Most "movies" are around 2 hours long.

And that's with zero interaction.

So, if you add interaction to a movie... 3 or 4 hours?

The question that arises is... should that added interaction bump up the standard price of a $10 movie to $60?

As long as its well paced and a good story I have no problem playing 5-8 hrs for a single player experience. If most people beat this in 5-8 hrs, than it'll probably be 10-12hrs for me. I like to take my time with certain games plus this world looks beautiful so i'll be looking at every little detail in the world.

The game just gets criticised for everything. I can't keep up with all the complaints. At least we moved on from the black bars talk I guess.

The problem is you can get five hours of that right now on youtube for free without losing much because of how little gameplay there is. Btw, I don't understand how that playthrough hasn't been pulled yet.

For once we agree. And comparing it to Second Son...that game has replay value since you can go good/evil, and it's sandbox in nature with a bunch of side missions. Can't speak for Ryse.

People keep saying GZ was $40...but it was released at $30. Captain Toad was released cheaper than a standard WiiU game. IMO that's fair if the game costs less for a smaller experience. We simply live in the age where games can vary in price points and it's ok, moreso than last gen.
