PlayStation 4 hits 20.2 million units sold worldwide (high sodium content warning)

I'd be shocked if UC4 sold leas then 7 million week 1 ww

I would be shocked if it does that well in one week. But in this case it would be a nice shock.

I do think UC can become their trademark online mp game series though. Moreso than Killzone or any other of their halo/cod-like experiments. This will benefit the ps4 hardware sales momentum as well.

I think you guys should go a little easier on The Artisan. Sure, even now, some of his posts are annoyingly ignorant but his current posts are far better than those a few months ago (1% of X1 sold in China=gap closed XD). He does seem like he's willing to learn, so give him a chance.

y'all can call me crazy, y'all can call me stupid, y'all can call me ignorant, y'all can call me naive, but what is inaccurate is labeling me as someone who shows up and posts with the sole purpose of annoying others. aka, a troll.

I apologize for saying this, but a few months ago, I really thought you were a troll as well. I mean, some of your previous posts were beyond ridiculous. But I'm glad to see that your posts are much more rational now. Just stick around Gaf a little longer and you will pick up knowledge about the gaming industry quickly. If it worked for a 17 year old like me, it'll work for you.

Oh, thanks. It was in January, actually.

Anyway, just don't make yourself seem foolish and you'll be fine.

Lol whatta face he's making. Did they actually do this in that fight?

not very many of those IPs became some of 360's best known though. but alright, you make a valid point that the 360 had a overall good launch with a good lineup.
Ps3 started to turn around slightly in 2008 because it got its first killer app. MGS4. But that year they also lost its last 2 and most anticipated 3rd party exclusives - FFS13, and Tekken 6. But 2009 is when the Ps3 finally started getting some good traction. Kz2, Demon souls, infamous, and of course at the end of the year, the redesigned half the original price console and Uc2. Uc2 in particular to this day is considered one of the greatest games of all time. If we count all of the consoles, last gen was from end of 2006 - end of 2013, 7 years. which would make end of 2010 right smack the middle of last gen, but that's well over a year the Ps3's popularity evened out with the 360.
True enough regarding UC2; I forgot about it coming out in 2009; also forgot that's when Demon Souls came out (thought that was '08) and the redesign launching. So I guess it's fairer to say the seeds for its turnaround were planted in 2009, but began to accelerate post-2010 thanks partly to Wii's popularity dropping off and MS starting to focus on casuals with Kinect, so that created a vacuum space for core gamers to look for a new system to get their main fix on, and that system became the PS3.

So in other words it's true to say it began that turnaround a year earlier, but the effect was less noticeable because the Wii was still dominating and 360 was still mostly pushing the core experience (I think this was also before it began to default to the Forza/Halo/Gears trinity that's become a sort of a meme over time)

I'd be shocked if UC4 sold leas then 7 million week 1 ww
Haven't the UC games always been slow-burners? And ND games in general? They kind of have that Nintendo effect going for them don't they?

I think both UC3 and TLOU were pretty massive successes right out the gate though wasn't it?

I recall UC3 shipping 3.8 million at launch and there were not any updates after that just for the game. Funnily enough TLOU released a lot later however only 3.4 million or so shipped at launch, the game was a runaway train though and reached 6 million in no time. I'd think TLOU is near 10 million at this point which is pretty crazy so with the background ND have there is no way Sony will not give UC4 a marketing blitz. UC4 doing 7 million lifetime would be a feat though let alone in a week lol.

when I said growing popularity I didn't mean breaking down casual/hardcore I just meant more spikes in sales. The PS3 also tried going at kinect with ps move. I dunno if it was at the exact same time but it definitely wasn't as popular. The last time I checked, kinect 1.0 bundles sold close to like 20 million units.

However, if the PS3 was still consistently able to outpace the 360 (don't know if it did) that just goes to show how much of a turnaround the PS3 pulled 2008-2009.

The problem a lot of PC gamers have is that they are incapable of understanding why anybody would buy a console. They are so wrapped up in their own bubble they've lost any and all understanding of why anyone would choose to play on anything other than what they deem to be acceptable.

And I say this as someone who owns a gaming PC.

The fact of the matter is that at £300 or whatever, the PS4 represents excellent value for what it offers. It offers variety, excellent visuals, all the most popular franchises and an all-in-one gaming solution for a really attractive and accessible price. And at that point, a lot of the unquestionable advantages of PC gaming just straight up don't matter. PC gaming is great, but for millions of people who enjoy this industry a lot of the things that make it great are utterly irrelevant to them. The PS4 offers them everything they need. Tens of millions of gamers straight up don't want a gaming PC and will never own a gaming PC. And it's fine for them to take that stance.

The fact that amazes me is the constant "gaming on PC is cheaper as I buy everything on sale on Steam or humble bundles"... as if it was a sustainable thing for developers which are arrogant greedy people that prey on ignorant console idiots...

Yup, there's a good reason that PC often gets screwed over when it comes to ports and that mentality is one of them. PC gamers normally make up a fraction of sales yet demand the most. I don't blame devs for being hesitant about the platform.

True but I've always wondered how many of the sales were spurred on by the Oprah endorsement rather than an already established interest in the product. Looking at how the Kinect is perceived now in the gaming community, it kind of gives off the vibe of a product that sold on a hype wave. This is purely speculation however, I've not got any numbers or anything to back it up, it just seems the perception of the product swung very wildly.

I love that because I registered with my gmail account I'll never be trusted enough with membership, but The Artisan is a shoe in!

WTF mods! Weird rule! In an industry where developers are in and out of different studios all the time, why would they want to use their studio work email to register on a site that will likely out last employment there!

On topic: super happy for Sony. They seem to have been making a lot of good decisions this gen. I like to think it has to do with their exclusivity deals with our studio XD ( probably not tho.. Lol )

Just for reference, Sony announced that cumulative sell in of the Uncharted series including Uncharted 1, 2 & 3 for PS3 as well as Golden Abyss for Vita had exceeded 17.32m as of March 31st 2012. (6 months after Uncharted 3 launch)

Golden Abyss had just released at this point and based on figures from Play Magazine we can estimate that sell through was around 500,000 units which means that at least 16.5m+ accounted for Uncharted 1, 2 & 3 sales. Bear in mind this number is from 2012 so sales are expected to be much higher by now.

In terms of unit sales for each game, we know the first Uncharted game sold more than 2.6m units, we know Uncharted 2 sold 4.9m units just before Uncharted 3 came out and we know that series sales for Uncharted exceeded 13 million units 1 month after Uncharted 3 launched with 3.8m units. As series sales moved to over 17 million we can say that the majority of that 4 million will go to Uncharted 3 which means that in 2015 sales should be easily over 8 million for the title with Uncharted 2 probably not too far behind.

Really? Well jeez. Now I have something to shoot for I guess! I was told previously that membership was not given to people who registered with 'free' email accounts. Maybe that dude didn't know wtf is going on.

Erhm.. As you were!

Are you sure you registered with your gmail account? I thought that free email account aren't allowed for creating a GAF account.

At least that's what they told me when I tried.

Confirm, my user name is a gmail address, I was told that was fine, but I'll be in Junior Member purgatory forever! Let's keep discussing so I can hit 300 posts and find out the true answer! :) jk.

edit: confirm, I am an idiot. I am not using a gmail address.. my buddy IRL mentioned that I might be a Junior Member because I used a gmail address, but he was clearly wrong and we were both quite confused.. Sorry for being dumb about this, and saying "Confirm" when I had confirmed nothing ( it was hard to find out on mobile.. ).. anyways.. peace out! Sorry for the huge off topic!

I don't know how you even got on to junior status then since a free email account is supposed to be entirely incapable of signing up. Pretty sure GAF requires a paid for email address to allow you to request membership. I distinctly remember having tried my old gmail and hotmail accounts since they were the only ones I remember the login details for but it wouldn't accept them so I had to get in touch with my ISP to get back into the emails before signing up.

I know of the 17 million figure but it's so hard to extrapolate sales from that data I didn't bother to mention it. The numbers you talk about basically show how the franchise has gone from strength to strength, that can't be a bad thing for the upcoming Uncharted 4. Whilst UC3 was nothing special to say the least and it took a gaffer to point out the controls were totally fucked, the sales potential of UC4 will not be hindered. The reason for that is of course TLOU, the buzz the game got from the press and from customers has put Naughty Dog in a really strong position now.

Uncharted 4 is the game I'm most interested in seeing how it does sales wise, there is no doubt at all Sony will push the game extremely hard and even though it was only one gameplay demo, I'm so excited at how Uncharted 4 looks to have built upon a lot of thing ND learnt with TLOU. TLOU opened higher than any of the Uncharted games during NPD, think it went past 800k first month so will be interesting to see if UC4 can hit 1 million. As most Sony games do better outside NA besides God of war the first year sales of UC4 will be fun to watch, I think 7 million is doable if the game is good.

What numbers have UC franchise and TLoU to claim that UC4 can sell 7 million copies first week?, only juggernauts like GTA can do that (and GTA is multi)

So, 10m lead, when will average joe will add "im buying PS4 because thats the winning console" to the list of reasons to buy one?

I dont think MS should go to extreme panic mode, but they do EVERYTHING to try to close the gap and it's still increasing.

Yeah I think the same. Kinect launched in 2010, bout a year after the Ps3 was at its prime with its PR/marketing.
You missed his "expertise" on porting in the Mass Effect thread.
You're putting words in my mouth, as I never claimed to have an "expertise" opinion, on or about fucking anything.

You claim to have no ill will but you give me the vibe you just don't like me. And that's fine but there's no need for you to be a dick about it.
This illustrates that you do not understand much. Porting is NEVER impossible, except when you are trying to port to a weaker system (ala Windows 8.1 will never be able to be ported to a Tandy 2000). The EXTENT and amount of work required for porting is something that varies drastically on a case by case basis, but this "would've been impossible" comment proves that you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Porting is taking the assets of something that is designed to work on something and reworking it to work on something else. The magnitude and effort involved could be pretty considerable.

What I suspect you are referring to is emulation, where you have one system that mimics another system and requires several orders of processing power beyond what is being emulated. Emulation on the otherhand is not always possible.
dude that's not at all what I've been saying... I'm emphasizing the fact that porting would be impossible in a world where the said hardwares to work ports on are just that different, but that THAT's never been or will be the case. I have not been disagreeing with you, I think you're misinterpreting my posts a bit.

To get the thread back on topic what even more amazing is that the PS4 has been super successful without any killer must own exclusives. The exclusives have been decent at best (Infamous SS and The Order) and mediocre.

To be fair, the Xbox One has also battled this issue.

Although, I do suspect that having the superior version of multiplat games has helped quite a bit. A fact that I am very surprised that people seem to not talk much about.

It's clear that 3rd parties are carrying both consoles right now.

Also millions of people love the exclusives so that opinion is also not fact

I'm confused by that last statement.

The 3rd party games have been on average rated higher than the esclusives games from either console.

Name one exclusive that you would say has been a bona fide system seller. That's not to say that they haven't been enjoyable. They have, but I would argue that none have been must own.

For me, the PS4s best selling point is that it has (excluding PC) the best looking/performing version of most games.

I remember doing that with my school account. Some schools use the Gmail account system and daisy-chain their system through that. It's kinda weird, but totally possible.

Worldwide, yeah. But I was referring to NA and UK, the two biggest markets last gen (and this gen, individually. Maybe)

It should do 7 mil no problem tbqh. TLOU has done more than that and UnCharted is more popular than that game. But yeah even 5 million at the very start sounds impossible.

I guess maybe with them being more prolific now though, UC4 could follow the trend like COD or AssCreed do with the bulk of sales in the first couple of days, then a huge dropoff.

But lifetime it should do at least 10 million.

What do you consider a killer app? Wii Sport might have been the last one and before that I can't think of a single exemple except SMB and maybe Sonic.

You then wish him a happy belated birthday, if it past recently...Because he was born in the year of 1998...

Sorry just need to check, as I am a little worried that only people born in that particular year are allowed birthdays

He's born in 1998 and he is 17 right now, which means his birthday of 2015 has already passed. We're only 3 months in so there's a good amount of chance it was not too long ago

Sony sold more consoles and appeals to more parts of the world and pretty much anywhere you go it'll be reflected. Unless you go to sites specific to a console that's not PS4. They have a lot of fans and a lot of them are online. That's not Sony's fault, or GAF or the fans...it's just reality.

Unless Sony broke into 20 million homes, stole $400 and left PS4s then it's the very definition of deserved. People saw a product and spent money on it. They deserve the sales.

What's really amazing is how Sony was able to sell that many systems without there being any games for it. Yes, there are games for the system but no big titles have been released yet (MGSV, UNCHARTED, PERSONA 5, STREET FIGHTER 5, etc) I mean, when these titles come out, those are just gonna sell way more consoles and push people to dive into the next generation that have been waiting for a reason to.
