Bloodborne: Impressions After 40 Hours (EDGE)

I'm betting on beast transformations. We haven't seen the player undergo one yet and there have been loads of teases for them - one in the edge article, in fact

Interesting. I've been kind of ignoring media coverage, but it's too close now, so I haven't heard about this. Nice.

If you don't want to be spoiled by reading the EDGE article, the complaint about "replayability" seems to come from the supposed "lack" of weapons to discover; I will say including items that you could only get in NG+ was an interesting way of "extending" peoples playthrough, but how many people simply used a BA to access these items (that you could get in this manner).

Finding new items has never been why Souls games have had replayability. Simply playing the game at a higher difficulty is the journey. In anycase the
Bloodgems seem to have taken over the role of weapon "variety". My hope is that there are enough of these to promote different playstyles, though I worry about the "aesthetic" limitation.

At the very less Blood Fashion seems to be in.

Dear poster,

There's a difference between "found" six weapons, and there being only six weapons in the game.

'If you thought From Software was going soft, Hidetaka Miyazaki is about to put you brutally back in your place. And if you've been watching this generation from the sidelines, unmoved by the remasters and rush jobs while you wait for the first true essential to arrive, now's the time. As if there was ever any doubt, Miyazaki and his team have done it all over again.'

Holy shit. This sounds awesome. I love the bit about being scared to move as well. Cannot wait to play this.

6 weapons isn't the final count, just the number of weapons they found, since enemies don't drop weapons and equipment anymore. I'm all for this if it means we don't get the same bloat that was in DS2 with gear.

This is all very good news. I honestly had no doubts that this game would be anything but spectacular.

Everyone really needs to stop likening Bloodborne to the souls game when talking about variety. From the get go it was more about a more consistent experience with little filler in comparison to the souls sereis. They are 2 different IPs and should be treated as such.

I've got to this point without entering any Bloodborne threads or watching any videos. But I caved and came in here and GODAMN IT I CAN'T HANDLE THIS WAIT.

40 hours and haven't beaten the game yet? Fuck yeah.

Though I worry about the less replayability, maybe they'll change their tune after beating the game, and like they said, they haven't touched on the mp components and the Chalice Dungeon.

All great impression, then suddenly a worrying as fuck bulletpoint:
"Only found 6 or so weapons and 6 or so guns in 40 hours"

This does not sit well with me.

Yep, I worry the game will be more "Action-y" and less an RPG/RPG-lite or whatever.

I like the little thrill of finding a new weapon in the Souls games, but how many of those are actually viable to use? I'm fine with a handful or two of useful weapons that can be upgraded.

My local Sony rep told me to expect my copy before embargo drops.

According to folks the embargo drops on monday.

This means HYYYYYPPEEE OVERLOOOAADDD.

Yep. If you only find 12 weapons but all of them are relevant and not just straight upgrades one after the other I'm super interested. Give me different weapon types, not the same thing with slightly better stats. Also not farming sounds GREAT

except none of the souls game weapons where just "upgrades" ? I finished dark souls with the starting dagger..

double jump

you haven't lived until a random little kid ask you "how do you make love".
so already the hype is out of control and people are happy about less choice for other players. ok then.

"Still 40 hours in and still with no end in sight, there's plenty of fresh terror to come."

They could just be taking their time, maybe not, either way, each trick weapon is meant to have more depth than a typical Souls weapon.

Oh no, there's not 45 weapons that are useless that nobody uses.

lol, my thought exactly

as long as there is a good amount of armor / clothing variety

The simple Saw Cleaver alone is > any weapon in the souls series in function, style and badassness

And they are all dual usage, so there is that.

Also, adding weapons / armor is about the easiest thing in the world for a team to do. So I'm sure we will see Weapons / Armor patches and DLC soon.

Hopefully Sony goes nuts with this game and brings out like 4 different story expansions. This could end up being my GOTG. Demons Souls was.

Even ignoring the common weapons everyone throws away, DS1 at least had a nice variety of more useful weapons with unique effects and playstyles. Fewer weapons is a relatively minor point for me, but still a bit disappointing.

NG+ is in. What is replayability? Finding new items that weren't there before? We have no way of knowing if that's the case as they haven't actually beaten the game.

Honestly, I don't really get their complaint, and people seem to only be latching on to one comment take out of a fairly large section. Their critique is based on the number of items they found, not on any real measure of replay value.

Yeah, I'm drooling over here. I love the bit about not just fearing death but what is coming at you to bring death. Jesus 2 more weeks....

And I'm loving the weapons thing. Give me fewer weapons but make them awesome over 40 maces with slight differences.

SargerusBR

I love Pokken!
I would hope the game has something like 30 weapons.

Just give me a greatsword Berserk style. Its all i need.

Not too worried about the weapons count, In DS1 I came across the black knight sword in the first two hours, beat the entire game using only that sword. In DS2 i found a fire sword in the first 2 hours, beat the entire game using only that sword. So many useless shitty weapons in the souls games. Just give me some good epic boss fights and lots of secrets and i will be happy. I am pretty sure that when i was pvp in both souls games EVERYONE was using the same 6 weapons.

I just like chasing/collecting unique loot, whether through upgrades, drops, bosses, secret caves, or standing on a bridge and slowly shooting a dragon with arrows. So, fewer weapons is fine as long as there is something worth working towards.
