Bloodborne: Impressions After 40 Hours (EDGE)

ANDS

King of Gaslighting
So pretty much Dark Souls II.

Which is a disappointment as well, but we already knew that, so it's ok, I got over it.

Except not at all? This seems to be a combination of DS1 with The Nexus and no Firelink. A connected world that loops in on itself is far more preferable to the disjointed nature of DS2. Especially if they had this in mind from the very beginning.

Actually I am wondering if the fountain messenger may actually be the only merchant. That would not bother me. There are definitely chattable NPCs scatterered around the world though. Who knows. The game just needs to be good. It doesn't need to be a carbon copy of the other games recently developed by FROM.
Yeah the ign video of the start of the game already had plenty of them hiding in their rooms.

I'm sorry but how do review a game without beating it, and no replay value? how do you even know when u have not started new game+ , souls games ng+ are one the best and I expected bloodborne will be the same.

The reason why they only found 6 weapons because all of the weapons seem to be unique. Demon's and Dark Souls have a lot of weapons, but they are usually multiple of the same type. I doubt we'll see multiple saw-cleavers or threaded canes variations in Bloodborne.

What I really want to know is why they think the base game doesn't feel like it will have the replayability the other games have?

I guess I need to get out of the mindset of comparing Bloodborne to its predecessors. 40 hours is a tiptoe through the tulips in the Souls series.

40+ hours in a game they
-haven't finished
-haven't played PvP
-haven't played chalice dungeon.

(Demons souls took 25-7 hours on my first run DS1 took 55 hours first run, i dont see how its a tiptoe through tulips)

?

Demon's/Dark Souls took me nowhere near that long to complete a playthrough on my first try. 40 hours wasn't including any PvP or Chalice Dungeons.

I definitely disagree with that, Dark's story was waaaay better in my opinion, and the Nexus was part of the reason the story was inferior, exploring the world didn't feel as much of exploring the narrative as it did in Dark.

The serpent/Gwyndolin twist is brilliant in the way it's completely tied to gameplay.

In terms of story, Dark > Demon's > Dark II, imo.

To each his opinion I guess, to me, The Nexus gave the world a consistent safe place, that consistent safe place allowed for many many plot points that couldn't be done otherwise, like:

1) Your relationship with the NPCs, I got attached to the NPCs in Demon's more because I simply saw them more.
2) Yurt/Mephistopheles quest was probably the best "side quest" in the series.
3) Talking to the NPCs after defeating every boss gave you new dialog, which resulted in character development, which Dark Souls completely lacked.
4) Saving people & populating the Nexus gave you the "ensemble cast" feel, kinda like every character is important.
5) Maiden in Black > Your favorite character.

I have played over 500 hours in Dark and Demon and what you just said was bullshit. The game length I would say would fall between 30-50 hours. Sure some people take much longer but the longevity really came from NG+, different character builds and online components. They've played 40 hours and have yet to beat it, telling me its just like those previous games. Not to mention Bloodborne has a new thing called the Chalice dungeon which will no doubt add dozens of hours.

You can't give a final veredict on the game without beating it. But after 40 hours with almost any game you can have a pretty good idea about how it plays.

Which is why it's being shown as impressions and not a review. The review will be released in the next issue

They didn't review it. They just gave their view of it after 40 hours. And their conclusion is one that's extremely positive. They end up saying that it's the first essential title of the current gen.

...which is pretty much the world structure of Dark Souls II.

Dark Souls 2 is not interconnected at all. Many of the areas led to dead ends and there were almost no shortcuts. Dark Souls 2s world was for the most part a bicycle wheel, it was all spokes off a center while Dark Souls looped on itself often, you could see other areas from another area where in Dark Souls 2 that never happened. If anything its more like the original Dark Souls but make it that Firelink Shrine is outside the game world.

Agree with all of this, particularly number 5! Having a central point to see all of the NPCs you've encountered/rescued every time you were there really gave life to them and the story. The Nexus was a brilliant gameplay mechanic, a safe-haven where you could finally let your guard down (

) after going through hell in one of the worlds. Who didn't feel at least a tinge of fear and foreboding as they left the Nexus into one of the hubs? It was brilliantly executed.

Again its fundamentally different from DaS2 structure. In DS2 if you went too far into an area it wouldnt be long before you found another bonfire to let you get back out. It also made it easier because Dark Souls 2 areas were generally linear with no verticality or looping on its self to make backtracking, if you needed to, a challenge.

With Bloodorne the lamps are much more spaced. So if you wander down the wrong path, the trek back could be just as long and perilous as any from DaS1 when you didnt have the lore vessel.

I like how little FROM shows off in their previews but i guess it is funny to see people who think the game is only 6 hours long because they only showed off the first boss for a long time.

If anything, FROM spoils the shit out of their games. I've tried to keep unspoilered on everything after the first boss.

For people concerned about replayability a repost from the other thread.

Replay it with gadgets or guns. Or whatever else is there. We're souls players we'll find a way im sure of it...

For those worried about weapon variety.

Many of you must not know about the changes to combat like:

- Rolling/Dashing, Backstepping, and Running R2s(previously only R1s) that are all unique.

- L1 tranformation attacks

- R2 charge attacks.

- Can upgrade weapons in more extensive ways than Souls series.

Theres so much more variety in the combat mechanics that its perfectly understandable why theyd have fewer weapons. Having to balance all these additions on top of the player having a weapon that is actually 2 must not be easy.

As has been said quality over quantity. If your someone who takes great enjoyment from finding many different weapons/sets, roleplaying with different weapons, all I can say is tough luck?

there are also L2 attacks and L2 Charge attacks. Differing attacks for rolls and dashes. and differing kinds of attack chains. Definitely the most depth in individual weapons in any souls-style game I have every played. The alpha had by FAR the most variety of available attack animations per weapon that I have ever seen from Fromsoft.

No variety in a game they haven't finished, have no guide for and are potentially missing items from a piece of the game they have no access to. OK.

The key here is in the 40 fucking hours. See, even whitout the guide in either DS or DkS, I was still able to find much more than 6 weapons and shields. It's okay though, I get you're just being weak behind the knees because your most hyped up game is being criticised in it's first impression.

Whether they are unique weapons or not, I still would have liked atlernatives to them, and from the way it's written, it just doesn't seem that way.

More than Dark 1? Well, that would really surprise me, I honestly doubt it.

The people who are playing the game said it's designed like DS1 and not DS2. Do you really need to argue?

You seem more insecure than that user to be honest. It is okay. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Specifically 3,4 & 5 Is what made demons souls edge in front of dark1 for me.

It was actually a pretty glowing write-up. They seemed less concerned about it than you are.

Exactly this as well, a safe haven allowed you to fear going into the world, kinda like how black paper looks more black the whiter the background (or something like that, I forgot how it goes).

I remember before mastering Demon's Souls, when a level kicks my ass, I'd just sit in the Nexus listening to the music, it was very relaxing but foreboding at the same time, you knew going back into the Tower of Latria that you would die horribly, I want that feeling back in Bloodborne.

The only criticism is coming from people complaining that the guy playing only found 6 weapons. The impressions from the article were highly favorable.

sounds generally good, but the lack of enemy drops/weapons/chests, along with the take on shields, makes me think, as I assumed, this is going away from grand adventure and more towards a mechanic-driven adventure.

I guess it's really a tit for tat, since both elements still seem to be grandstanding, and I'm excited about the shortcuts, but I'm curious if it's streamlined in some ways. From the E3 demo I thought they were moving towards a DMC-ness, but Edge saying that the replay value is not as high is interesting. I'm sure I'll love it regardless, but it does make me hope for a (the inevitable) Dark Souls III.

They aren't even sure about the replay value. They haven't finished it yet so they haven't replayed it. People are blowing that part way out of proportion to the rest of the article.

If there are six combo weapons that are well defined with distinct movesets, then that's at least six times I'll play through the game.

I just finished reading the article and they're not really criticizing it. They're just trading one form of replayability for another. Instead playing around with different builds in a completely static world over and over, you're getting fewer weapons to play around in completely new levels (chalice dungeons). That sounds better to me, and Edge seems to agree. Souls games eventually run out of steam because there is only so many times I can run through Anor Londo. Does it really make it different whether I'm killing knights with a greatsword instead of a katana?

"Did not beat the game but they feel like it is less replayable than its predecessors"

Everyone is reading way to much into this.

Pretty sure they are talking about the difficulty of the game, not replay value. Meaning, its not as easy to get through on the first try, therefore most will be turned off to try it a second time. Its just worded funny.

I always see this. I wonder what made people think this was going to be a DMC type of game ?

I wonder if the reason for only 12 weapons is so Sony can arse us again with microtransactions (PAY TO WIN)with more weapons as dlc like they did in TLOU?

Wouldn't surprise me. I'm worried...

Makes me want to hold out to see...

Not into that bullshit...

Yeah, and? It is mine too, which my reply is based on. Even if there were more reasons to criticise, I'm still implying that he's being condescending due to me criticising Bloodborne.

How many of the weapons inthe other Souls game did you honestly use?
Many. Be it the halbard, sword, medium size sword, big ass sword, hammers, whips, daggers or maces. That's whitout counting the numerous alternatives that they had.

Wtf? Didn't they say they were 40 hours in with no end in sight? How in the hell did we come to the conclusion that 12 weapons is all the game has? And even if that was true then ok. This is not Demon Souls, Dark Souls or Dark Souls 2 so stop comparing the games. THIS IS BLOODBORNE!

I can't tell if this is a joke post or not.

They called Bloodborne a masterpiece, the 6 weapons thing wasn't even "criticism", it was just a statement, which they followed it up with an explanation.

They found 18 unique weapons without beating the game (6 transformable weapons = 12 + 6 guns), that's more variety (mechanically) than any Souls game, I don't know what the hell are you talking about, I'm also 100% positive there is at least one "rare" or "legendary" weapon in the game, & many more hidden weapons.
