Remote Play @ 60fps

The latest PS4 and Vita firmware updates enable the ability to remote play PS4 games to Vita at 60 frames per beautiful second.

I just tried it out and am happy to report that Resogun finally feels like Resogun. The upgrade is HUGE. It's like a low res PS4 in your hands.. but with beautiful colour.

The only downside to my understanding is the inability to record and upload video while in High Quality 60fps streaming mode. Oh, and you need a network that can handle it.

I've got the PS4 downstairs running through powerline adapters and a number of routers to a wireless router upstairs (close to where my Vita lives). Works perfectly.

Now if only the Vita had 4 shoulder buttons..

As an aside, Steam home streaming works great too and at 1080p 60fps no less. I highly recommend ethernet over powerline if you're in a medium to large place and are unwilling to run cables everywhere.

Has anyone tried this for L2 and R2 substitution?

There's still just too much lag. I'm literally sitting 3 feet away from my PS4 and Bloodborne is nigh impossible with its focus on well-timed dodges (yes, I have it set to directly connect to my PS4). And the video feed keeps breaking up too for some reason.

(not that Bloodborne would actually benefit from 60 FPS streaming, I just wanted to vent)

With 60fps update, RP finally became truly awesome. I use it almost every day, and 60fps has made a huge difference.

Since you have video feed problems, you definitely don't have stable connection. Is your PS4 connected to net via WiFi? That can destroy quality of RP instantly.

Every 30fps game gets benefits in 60fps RP mode. Lag is smaller, OS is smoother, and overall video feed is less stuttery.

A 30 FPS game will always have far worse results with streaming than a 60 FPS one. The higher and more stable the framerate (or rather, the lower and more consistent the frametime) the better for streaming. Any performance / frame pacing issues are heavily amplified.

At least that has been my experience with Steam streaming.

As has already been said, 30fps games benefit from selecting 60fps streaming.

Oh and make sure "use Wi-fi in Power Save Mode" is disabled on the Vita.

Direct connection is not the best AFAIK due to crappy WiFi on Ps4. Is your ps4 wired try disabling direct and connect through your network.

Nah, it's directly connected via Ethernet.

Some people sadly have a lot of trouble enabling good RP stream in their home.

Did you tried to check how congested is 2.4ghz wifi space in your appartment/house? You can check that on your mobile phone, and Vita you can switch to another WiFi channel. Additionally, you can turn off WiFi power savings on Vita or try to go via router.

And many people have shitty routers [or don't have them at all]. RP in my room is perfect via direct connection, lag is truly minimal and there is zero streaming issues.

Maybe one of your devices is not working properly

even on the PSTV with direct ethernet connections on both machines, DF still measure 100ms of latency, that's 6 frames of lag. It's unavoidable.
That seems about right for a 33mspf game. I imagine the input lag is reduced with a 60fps title

What difference does that make?

It's a poorly labelled setting on the Vita, you'd think it would mean to continue using Wi-Fi in standby/'power-save' mode.

But really, it means to keep the Wi-Fi chip in a permanent low-power state, meaning signal strength and internet speed is much weaker.

Damn did not know this, thanks!

That and non-clickable sticks (L3/R3) are the only remaining negatives to Remote Play.

Don't see us getting a new Vita that solves the issue any time soon though.

Yeah. Those are the reasons I don't use Remote Play all that much. Muscle memory is a bitch, I don't want to get used to a "new" layout.

how sure are you about this? never heard of it.

Awesome!

Can we suspend on PS4, and continue from Vita from there?

Pretty sure.
I'm also absolutely, positively sure that the "Use wi-fi in power-save mode" should be DISABLED at all times. I was having wi-fi drops regularly with it, even while the Vita was surely on and 2 meters away from my wi-fi spot. And to this day, until you said "poorly labelled" I didn't get or understand why it was named like that! Now I know it should have been called "Low-power Wi-fi mode" or something... Funny thing is, there are LOTS of people being burnt by this setting. You have lots of wi-fi problems and you would never guess to disable this with its current label, and this is not even properly documented.

News to me.

I'll test this out today.

Fuck, that seriously demands a new thread. I assumed, like I'm sure most do, that that setting enables wifi during standby.

HUGE improvement.

I've set the video and framerate to high and it's glorious on my Z2.
Considering getting the cradle now, since I can take my phone out more than Vita.

Never knew about that power saving thing.

I also always wondered about airplane mode on the non-3G Vitas.

Does using Flight mode, with then turning on Wifi, improve battery life over not using it?

the lag and the dissimilar controls will always make it the inferior cousin of the wiiu gamepad.

hardly. the lag is addressable, and the controls too. I'll take the Vita's global internet range vs the gamepad's long-extension-cord range.

OP, I tried out the high quality option with Diablo last night and cannot believe how smooth it is. Incredible.

More interested in how it improves the experience on PSTV than my Vita. I think due to the larger screen and view distance, playing at 30fps was more distracting on my TV as opposed to my Vita.

That said I'm sure for games like Resogun the difference will be apparent for anybody who forced to read braille.

And games with an uneven framerate but one above 30 will lose a lot of stuttering that stacked between the uneven consistency and frame duplication by the Vita down framing it also. Playing through a good chunk of Tomb Raider made me wish for a 30fps lock for the first time pretty much ever.

Think I'm gonna pick up a PSTV for my new house, I'd love to be able to play on the PS4 in the lounge when it's in my man cave.

I find the rear touch screen to be nearly unusable. But I'm probably just uncoordinated.

don't use the back touch. it's super finicky.

I like using lower right and left corners of the screen when I can, for extra buttons . that is pretty useable. I think Destiny and AC Black Flag used that.

60fps is automatic with the update right? I not, where is this option?

No, 30fps is set by default.

Vita > PS4 Link app > bubble in the lower-right corner > settings > video quality

When you switch to 60fps, DVR will not work in those game sessions.
