PS4 Firmware 2.50 (Yukimura) coming March 26

Not that I care about it but they did promise DLNA support so that still should be delivered as well, for those who want it.

But yeah even if they've been a bit slow the additions have been substantial compared to what PS4 launched with.

They said they would look into DLNA support. Did not promise it.

Actually im pretty sure they did say it is coming, but that they dont want to just copy/paste it form PS3 and instead build it from the ground up for PS4. Im pretty sure part of it is them also waiting for some back end codec stuff to come into effect (from reading the Jeff Rigby threads).

Awesome, a day early birthday present!

Do you mean with this update, or in general? There are more than a few portions of games where the share features are blocked, usually cutscenes that the developer/publisher are worried might be considered spoilers. There's an option to tell the player when blocking has occured, and that's what Gacha-pin is referring to. And I wouldn't expect many blocked cutscenes to also trigger screenshots, but it is possible. In that case, I would guess that the PS4 would indeed give you two popups, one letting you know you got a trophy, and one saying that you can't take a screenshot.

I think the blocking is kind of clunky and annoying anyways, but that would be especially disruptive.

I've seen the blocked cutscenes before but AFAIK it only prevented recording, not screenshots. Haven't really tested it though.

That said - I haven't seen any recent game use that recording block feature, it only seems to have been the early PS4 titles

The game released this month and I'm playing currently blocks the share. I got the first trophy on Yukimura and yeah, two popups apeared on the screen.

How does suspend work on the XB1, from your description it sounds like you have to manually choose to suspend a game?

Because once you check the option in the PS4 settings you don't have to think about it every time you turn off the console. The current game will always be suspended unless you manually quit the application before you shut down the PS4. I think this should help the feature gets more use because you well get more and more used to having your games ready just like you left them.

Its the same like it has been since launch. Turn off your machine while in sleep mode, you dont have do anything other than that. Come back 'Xbox on' and it boots into your game.

The VidiPath protocol is designed to allow for the broadcast of a cable stream over Wi-Fi to make everything from your cable provider, including programming and even channel guide data, available to watch on VidiPath-equipped devices such as “TVs, smartphones, tablets, game consoles, and more.”

Q: Forward thinking console? Can we have online friend alerts and DNLA?! Something your last console had th should’ve been present at launch!

A: + Scott McCarthy on March 11th, 2015 at 5:28 pm said: We want PS4 versions of these features, not a cut/ paste from last gen. Stay tuned.

= DLNA 2 with metadata support, Three box model and more like Plex Client and metadata compatibility ?

Q: Can we get an update to play videos from our external hard drives like the ps3 already does? Or the ability to stream from our wd external cloud devices?

A: + Scott McCarthy on March 11th, 2015 at 5:43 pm said: We want PS4 versions of these features, not a cut/ paste from last gen.

The PS4 will be a media hub and will use DLNA to stream a Blu-ray disk over the home network, Playready sideload and serve media over the home network again using DLNA and much much more. What's planned for the PS4 can be seen in numerous Sony patents.

Game streaming as well as DLNA Client and Server features in the PS4 are in part how Playstation Vue, Now and Store get accessed by other platforms in the home.

The Connected home and all this home network sharing gets a kick in the ass with the FCC mandate requiring Cable company DVRs to support streaming this June 2015.

Keep cable but lose the box with VidiPath, a new wireless way to watch

DLNA-Vidipath

Moore told us the first approved VidiPath devices will begin hitting the market as early as the second quarter of this year.

“there are (game) consoles that I know of that will be VidiPath certified as well.” With Sony in the mix, it’s not a stretch to assume the PS4 could incorporate the technology. And DLNA Marketing Manager Katie Gengler also hinted that TV manufacturers are looking into firmware updates that could potentially make some existing smart TVs compatible with VidiPath. While we’re still waiting for the VidiPath veil to be lifted, it appears the protocol will hit the ground running once it premieres in the next few months.
Now that suspend/resume will be here with Firmware 2.5, DLNA which comes last is now possible.

Examples:

Plain old PS3 client DLNA could be easily implemented but the following are going to be supported.

DLNA three box model where the PS4 is able to be controlled by a phone or tablet requires AOAC network standby support where the phone can turn on the PS4 and have the PS4 turn on a stereo or TV using CEC depending on media to be played (Music or Video) and control the PS4 DLNA Player/renderer.

The PS4 as a DLNA server on the home network, the same network standby but not turning on a local TV or stereo and transcoding as well as DASH (adaptive streaming) media using DLNA over the home network with DTCP-IP DRM. DASH is needed because it could be a WiFi network.

Consolidating multiple DLNA RUI server menus in one Menu on the PS4 (patent). Churn which is described as customers leaving your UI (with access to your store and services) to use another services UI is to be avoided....you want the customer to always have easy access to your service where you make money.

ooVoo is going to accept calls while the PS4 is in "rest mode" and turn on the PS4 and TV which also needs Network standby and CEC functionality...Some DLNA and ooVoo functions will be written at the same time. What bothers me is I expect DLNA Blu-ray server ability won't occur till after Oct-Nov or when enough certified platforms are on the market to make it practical.

Spotify has a off line music playing feature which requires the music to be downloaded and saved on the PS3 and PS4. This I think requires Playready sideload and uses OGG Vorbis for audio file compression which is already in the PS4. Spotify could be streamed to other certified platforms in the home from the PS4 and PS3 along with blu-ray disks and other media Payready sideloaded to the PS4 Hard Disk.

The official Playstation App has appeared for me on iOS. Version 2.50.9 and on the Australian store.

What's struck me as interesting is the "VoiceOver for iOS is now supported" feature. Anyone tell me what that is?

It's more that you wouldn't know if it was left on, draining the battery while not in use.

Maybe after 10 minutes of inactivity (does it have motion sensing like the DS3 does?), the light will turn on for 15 minutes before it auto shuts itself off (or blink every few seconds for 15 minutes, whichever uses less battery).

That way, if you don't want it to automatically shut off, you could pick it up and it would turn the light off/reset the inactivity timer.

Is there a list of unlisted updates? I'm sure there's a few Sony neglected to mention.

Suspend/Resume is SOOOO much nicer than I expected. Picking up the controller and playing Bloodborne within 10 second of hitting the PS button.

Do you think power consumption is a lot higher with suspend and resume?

I put my console into rest mode and it seems like the fans are still going at a decent rate.

Does it make more sense to just close the application if you aren't using it for a while?

It's only 1.5w higher, and it doesn't change whether you keep an application open or not.

Keeping the fans spinning is a (great) feature of the PS4 to make sure your system is gradually cooled off when you stop using it. The old rest mode was already able to do it.

What is going on with the iOS app?

It shows now that it is available to update but when I click update it says that this item is no longer available.

Since the update, everytime shut off my ps4 (not sleep), when I start I got the "tip : power management" thing that pops up. Everytime. Gets on my nerve. any other eople in the same wagon ? Please tell me I am not alone.

Surely this has something to do with the fact that the "turn off" is in a submenu now, but still, annoying as fuck.

I have been loving this update. I was fairly impressed when I was able to power my ps4 from rest and it returned me straight into Bloodborne. What a great feature. Now with the added Spotify today, im loving it!

Well it wouldn't work when you tried to use it, so I'd hope people are smart enough to figure out it's turned off. Also, Sony forces a damn notification on your TV to let you know it turned off. Gee thanks. Don't think I could figure that out. What would I ever do without that forced notification popping up while I watch Netflix?

It's also a player indicator too, same as the previous LED's on the DS3

One time I booted back up after a suspend and I could hear my optical drive flipping out. Spit my disc out and kicked me out of Bloodborne saying I needed the disc to play. Stuck it back in and it was fine, but it kind of freaked me out. Just a one off occurence so far, but I hope it's not a symptom of something going wrong with the hardware D;

Anyone else have this happen to them?

I'm getting this too - and I can't figure out any way to disable it.
I turn off my electronics, I don't want a yellow card every time I turn them back on.

It's like getting a popup and chime every time you open your fridge.

"Did you know we have a freezer section that keeps your food even colder?"
YES I DO, NOW GO AWAY

If you delete the PlayStation App and redownload from your Purchased list it should be the most up to date version.

At least some relief, I am not alone. I tried to suspend / resume to see if it made the pop up go away, but didn't seem to work. PM me if you find something....

Do you have to click through it or something, or are you simply angry at having to see the text ?

Like the screenshot thing, some of you seem to get quite upset over the tiniest things. I haven't shut down yet though.

It's a bug that was not there before the update. As simple as that.

Planned are many features that require Rest mode and Standby mode. If you insist on full power off then you wan't be able to take advantage of some of the DLNA modes , ooVoo calling modes, remote play, remote Blu-ray and more.

Rest mode power use is going to drop if not in this version of the PS4 then the next version.

Why cant we still turn off the DS4 light? i dont have a camera let me save as much battery as i can damn it

Honestly, testing it on both PC and PS4, the LED color and brightness doesn't affect the battery nearly as much as everyone thinks. The touchpad being used for input other than the button itself affects it far more because the controller is constantly polling it. If you have games that don't use it you'll notice a difference. On PC if you use something like DS4windows that turns the pad on for use as a mouse, the battery life drops from 6-8 hours to like 4 and change.

Yeah these are really annoying. Strangely enough, the "Discover" notifications are the only ones you can't disable in the settings. Hopefully they patch that in because these tips are only helpful the very first time you boot up your console, not 6 months later.

I think the viewer counter on Twitch is broken with the new firmware. It ticks up when people join but never down when folks leave your stream.

Don't know if it has been mentioned but found a feature that I didn't see listed.
web browser's memory is now stored on the system and not just within the app, meaning when you check messages, leave the web browser or even turn off your system it now saves all your cookies.

Does trophy screenshots have any settings?

Has Bluetooth supported devices been updated?

With the inclusion of external drives, can I transfer all the data of an app(current game/app version, save data, and dlc) to the external drive, and then restore it if I feel like playing it again? Oh, and can it be done on individual games?
Sorry if these have been asked, and answered before.

Well, the download speed issue seems to have fixed itself for me: the Bloodborne patch downloaded at about ten times the speed it normally would. WOOP WOOP

The one thing about this update I don't like is that they force the startup jingle even if the keytones are off...any way to switch it off so I can hear the sexy PS1 startup sound unobstructed again?

Okay guys, any idea what settings I'm supposed to have so that let's say, my friend and I are using voice chat and I decide to record footage, for both our voices to be recorded when I save the 15 minute clip? Do both of us have to have the same settings turned on? I tried it yesterday and it only recorded my voice and not my friend. Does it reset? And do we have to be in a party chat in order for it work cuz we didn't make one and were just using the in game voice chat.

I was under the impression it was meant for Party Chat, but has your friend enabled the setting in Share settings?

Was it this update or a previous one that allows you to resume a DVD/bluray from where you last stopped it? Anyway, it's nice they finally put it in.

Both of you need to turn on that setting in party chat settings for the voice to be recorded.

Alright thanks. I'll double check that too. I'm pretty sure we both did that as soon as the firmware hit, so maybe it reset? We'll check again. Thanks!

No, it doesn't work. And you can't mark the discovery messages as read, you can only select them and read them.

One discovery message is still appearing everytime I shut off the PS4. The others messages were fine, there was a notification only the first time.

It's a bug and they need to fix it.

At least they can be deleted in the capture gallery.

I didn't realize that the full-size of a game download is now visible in the Downloads list (not just the initial PlayGo-sized portion).

Thank you Sony.
