Kotaku - Microsoft Punishes Gears Leakers By Making Their Xbox Ones Unusable

These people don't inherently work for MS do they? Ban them from the game fine. But bricking the entire console? Idk

And let's be real. GOW remaster is the worst fucking kept secret this e3. Let it ride.

Secret or not, you sign a contract you better fucking read it.

Sounds like a slap on the wrist.

This could have been alot worse for them than getting their xbox and account banned.

The link in the OP doesn't work for me.

Are these personal consoles owned by the leakers, devkits owned by the testing company, or something else? It's not very clear.

I'm guessing it's the consoles owned by the leakers, or at least that's how I assume the console beta tests work for VMC since it's all remote testing as far as I know.

Microsoft, sit down here for a second next to me

Even if you're 100% morally justified in doing this, it's not the time to start some shit a couple weeks before E3

Just got an email from VMC about this with leakers and such. I'm actually a VMC tester though not for Gears (don't have an XB1).

You do sign an NDA though, and you can't disclose this stuff.

I'm not surprised this happened.

A lot worse could be happening to them. They will be lucky if that's all they lose. They signed to something and were employed by VMC via MS under NDA.
Because of this, both members were permanently removed from the community and addressed to our legal department, as per the terms of the NDA.

Lol, hats off to MS.

These guys tried to break their NDA and MS came down with Mjolnir.

Their lucky all they did was this and not pursue legal action.

I can see them losing access to online services and banned from further opportunities, but turning their entire console into a warm brick? No, man. If they're so worried about leaks, don't hire external testers.

Why not?

VMC may also be pressing charges against them for violating the NDA.

They are going HARD. Letting everyone know they ain't gonna tolerate any leaks in the future.

Well I mean VMC staying business literally hinges on publishers being able to trust them. If that's gone then they might as well close their doors. So yeah, I bet they're going hard.

You sign an NDA. What the fuck do you think is going to happen?! People think they can just leak shit on to the internet and there won't be any repercussions.

Plus after having Microsoft's entire E3 conference leaked last year, they should have expected that they would come down hard if they catch anyone leaking more info.

Considering that said testers probably signed an NDA --- They'll be glad to take this as a loss, and lesson rather than get sued.

This may have been MS's big thing this E3, and having footage leak early is never good.

Surprised they aren't being sued for breaking NDA.

I think people sitting at home playing a beta they signed up for online is giving them the false impression that they can talk about it because public betas are common now. Which is no fault of Microsoft or VMC as they're VERY clear about it in every email and make people sign agreements, but when you're hiring random people online there's always going to be a bunch of idiots who don't read or expect repercussions which could be a lot worse than a locked console.

It is actually hilarious that there are people that think this is severe punishment.

Do you guys realize they could be taken to court and fined for thousands of dollars? I mean these people should be thanking god if this is all they get.

Man when i worked in the same building as Respawn, they wouldn't talk about anything, They didnt have their name in the lobby directory, there was no name on the door to the office, and I tried to befriend the smokers outside, but they would say anything. And I am such a cool guy.

I really don't see the problem with this. They signed an NDA, and then they proceeded to break it. A harsh lesson for sure, but now they know not to take these things for granted.

I love what VMC does, I really wish the punishment was harsher for this. It's ridiculous that so many people think that NDAs don't apply to them.

To be honest, that's the least of the worry, VMC are going legal on their ass.

Which is exactly what you've signed up for, breach the agreement and you've agreed to be sued.

Good. These people are breaking NDAs. VMC makes it really clear what the possible punishments are for breaking them. They remind people before every project, its honestly plain as day.

Honestly, if bricking their consoles is the worst thing to come out of breaking the NDA, they should consider themselves lucky

Theyre testers- its their job to test these things discretely?

VMC got both professional testers that got some experience and they also offer testing from home, something you can apply for.

I participated twice now, you obviously get paid for it and in general it was a pretty good experience.

So it's not really suprising alot of people who are "working" from home tend to leak stuff...
That happened a couple of times now, still it's a pretty good method for every developer and I really hope they don't punish VMC for that.

VMC tester here.

The last time a leak like this happened, EVERYONE involved was tempbanned from live until they could find the culprit.

NDAs are serious fucking business.

Breaches and leaks like this hurt the company, and they hurt the community of testers, because developers and publishers will think twice before using them.

Testing is both a privelige, and a PAID JOB FROM A LARGE COMPANY. Leaking a game may get you about 15 minutes of internet fame, but it WILL get you banned, and it WILL ruin any chance of you ever getting into the gaming industry, let alone your job prospects in other industries that may handle sensitive information.

Think before you do something stupid like that. Please.

Why is everyone so against the leakers? So MS can't show the game unannounced now with maximum hype. Why do you care? You're consumers, not shareholders.

Yep just got an email about it from the company. Banned XBL accounts and temporarily locked consoles. Harsh but breaking NDA is a no no.

BULLSHIT! They aren't pirating the game. This is disgusting!

How the hell is this disgusting? They should be thankful that Microsoft isn't taking them to court for breaking an NDA. That is letting them off EXTREMELY easy.

Breaking an NDA is an extremely bad offense and something you CAN be sued for. Anyone calling this harsh has no idea how important NDAs are.

Yeah, their reputation with MS just took a ding and that's bad for business.

Bingo... not to mention, their account may have been worth more/same as the console.
