Horizon: Zero Dawn Trailer (Guerrilla, post-apocalyptic pre-historic adventure)

I wonder what they hunt dhe robots for. Obviously not food, duh.
But like, resources? Tech?

If you look at all the hunting equipment she uses its all made from robodino bits, as presumably it's the only metal hard enough to penetrate.

She was also harvesting the green stuff the grazers collected, so maybe that's useful as an energy source? The humans clearly have access to some tech and aren't complete primitives - the big cliff city with the elevators showing there are places with productive surplus. Presumably they've also got metallurgy, maybe even comms.

The most impressive thing to come out of Sony's conference for me, well, besides No Man's Sky.

I think that will be Battlefront.

I hope not...three fricking multiplayer games in a row and those...didn't turn out to be the most estimed games in the end. Battlefield looks really impressive, but nothing in gameplay looked particularly new. The setting makes the difference though. This looks more ambitious and creative.

I've keep going back to who or what makes these robots. Some in the trailer look a lot like elk (or deer). If i were an evil AI keeping and or making these things, why would I make ones that look like that? Why not all super vicious things like the trex kind or they could defend themselves? Lol I know, logic in a video game, I just want to know more about the story

My theory? They started replicating themselves into random shapes until arriving at forms that suited their environment and their role in it, kind of like those pictures that use an algorithm to build an image out of triangles. I think they've been removed from human influence for a very long time.

This has become my most anticipated game. Would love to see gameplay with other characters and her working together.

I don't have much confidence in this project, but I'd like to be pleasantly surprised..

- Music was atrocious. I hope they didn't have time writing a real score and just ended up grabbing some random track from a best of world music cd lying around because the game will be insufferable if this is the kind of shit we'll get in the final product.
- I don't like the world building, I don't like the character design, I don't like the monsters, I don't like the color palette. The concept is kinda unique but the style is generic indulgent hollywood-concept-art-factory stuff. It's all very pretty and well made, but I just can't bring myself to like it.
- The voice acting sucked on all levels. It was annoying, badly written and at best a mediocre performance. If the final game has continuous voice over like the trailer I'll make sure to never play the game.
- Gameplay actually looked pretty solid from what little we were shown. If it's done well enough I'd be willing to forgive all the above except the voice over.

Can you tell us what games you do like so we can frame your opinion in context?

Makes no sense at all. The whole EU is part of the west.

Why are we discussing something like this in the Horizon thread?

Lol I have no idea. Because someone said GG wasn't a western studio. Not that such things limit what you can do or how skilled the developer is.

The world looks very interesting and we got a decent chunk of gameplay. I am excited to see more so job well done.

Way to rain on the parade.

Edit: Damn I fell for that one. That's what happens when you love a game too hard lol

I like a lot of games spanning most genres. Also note that while I complained about all the superficial stuff, I'm willing to forgive most of it if the game play actually is good.

some games I really like: re4, metroid prime, the soulsborne games, dota, symphony of the night, civ-series, puyo puyo, metal gear rising, persona series, arma series, ico and shadow of the colossus..

there's a lot more of course.

anyway, I can't be the only one who didn't feel that cheap world music?

Why does she apologise to the first robot she kills? Maybe she believes they are alive, or have spirits?

I thought it was stupid as well, but I think it's just how she says it or something. Most of what she said was mildly irritating.

But if the AI has become sentient, than aren't they basically living things at this point? That's the basis for a lot of great sci-fi. Just look at Bladerunner for example.

EVERYTHING. I've wanted from a western game. EVERYTHING.

Colorful? Check.
RPG? Check.
Cool concept? Check.
Great character design? Check.
Art style in general and textures etc... all FREAKING amazing. Day 1.

Sony freaking killed it for me this E3. And this is coming from someone who's been a huge Ninty fan. I almost fell out of console gaming with the PS3. PS4 and Wii U brought me back... the only PS3 games I really enjoyed were Ni no Kuni, the Yakuza games and Valkyria Chronicles. Great job Sony and Guerrilla Games!!!! Sony (with TLG, FF7, Shenmue, No Man's Sky and Horizon along with cool indies) really checked all those boxes for me! :D

It's a joke post

it really is not.

this is yet another game based on a premise/world building with attached gameplay rather than a gameplay vision with a world built upon it. Most likely it will have standard gameplay with a few gimmics, some pretty graphics and hollywood-like storytelling. I'd like to be proven wrong as we get to see more of the game, but that's what I'm seeing so far.

I took it as, this is the world that she grew up in, so a robo dino probably means to her what an innocent deer (think bambi) would mean to me

besides tribes that don't kill for food purposes are usually against the killing of animal life unless for self-defense

on another note, I think the self narrative is being overstated, this was a reveal trailer so a lot of things will be tweaked and I just assumed her talking as much (which I didn't really think was that bad) was to help set tone and provide an insight into her personality, I'd rather her talking than a silent protagonist a la Snake from the first couple of vids we got out of phantom pain

How about you know more about the game like the fact that GG hires CDPR quest designer and FNV lead writer for this? I mean yeah, other worries is fine but hollywood storytelling is rather unwarranted here considering the extra force they hire for Horizon alone.

Sounds like you got lost on the way to the Gears 4 thread..

sure and I hope you are right on that one. Personally, I'd never play a game for story alone but if others are fine with that I'm happy if they get something they can enjoy.

I wish GG to have dynamic weather/lighting system (mostly will be there) in this game so i can immerse myself in that world by taking pictures and exploring every day as the world is beautiful.

But the combat looks way more interesting and gameplay-ey than any open world I've played. I'm more concerned it's going to get bogged down by all the other shortcomings of the genre, i.e., tons of filler, poor pacing, majority of space being uninteresting/insignificant, copy/paste areas and characters, unimaginative scenarios, incredibly dull feeling of going from waypoint a to waypoint b with no interesting mechanics in between, etc. Even good writing did not manage to free Wticher 3 and New Vegas (some of the best open world games) from all these issues.

After listening to a IGN rewind I think that is the case. The machine animals are in the same world as regular animals so to them they are all the same. Maybe like you said she feels they too serve a purpose and since she is hunting them she feels bad but it's necessary.

I'm not sure if this game is for me, will depend on seeing more gameplay as time goes by. But really like the setting and the idea of today's humanity as a mysterious lost civilisation.

Bufff, too complicated. What you are looking for maybe is in the Shakespeare´s books. This is gaming, you know, having fun!. From the Atari 2600, Pong and Pacman to Spectrum,Amstrad and Amiga to today. No need to look for strange things.

So basically the setting is kind of a second 'prehistoric' age? There were cities and civilizations, but after a big fallout humanity got back to hunting/gathering, but the machines from the earlier period are still around. That pretty much it? I love this concept.

This may have been my favorite part of the Sony e3 conference. Definately my highlight from Sony's conference.

Tempered hype expectations since it is still so far out.

Don't shoot me, but I just don't care much about TLG, Shenmue 3, FF7 (not my favorite FF-though will probably still pick this up).

Tempered hype: Horizon, Star Wars Battlefront (I get one multi-player shooter int he vein of cod/bf a year, this will be it)
Slightly below that: No Man's Sky looks ok, a bit boring.
