Horizon: Zero Dawn won't be 'tutorialised'; RPG systems detailed

Speaking to VideoGamer.com earlier today, art director Jan-Bart van Beek revealed that there is "a lot of interplay between the different weapons and ammo types, and there is a sort of creative aspect there where you need to find the right way to use weapons for particular robos. And that counts for a lot of the game. We don't tutorialise the game, we don't go and tell you how to hunt these robos or how they interact. You really have to go out there and explore these things by trial and error.

"And it's the same case for learning about how the robos interact between themselves; who's protecting who and how they are all interconnected. You're always a little bit like David Attenborough where he's sitting in the bushes and studying these creatures trying to learn their behaviour, seeing how you can exploit that behaviour from them."
"There is a skill tree," he continued. "There are two basic character development systems. First of all you're getting XP and you can use that XP to gain new perks. So that's the big one. One of the perks that you saw being used [in the demo] is the Precision Shot where you slow down time and that allows you to [aim] the arrows a little more precisely. Without that it's actually really hard to hit certain weak spots. [The character in the demo] is already an advanced character about level 12, I think.

"But there's also basically a secondary way of upgrading your character, and that is through the harvesting and crafting system. By going into nature and defeating bigger and stronger robos you'll get better armour-plating, better weaponry and slowly but surely you'll develop your character in a more naturalistic way."

Last topic on this I promise :p

This game is making me want a PS4 more than the other games they showed at E3 to be honest.

Honestly I didn't really expect RPG elements, I just assumed they were going to tell a story.

This seems to be the kind of game where you see the super-epic concept art and fan dreaming and go "yeah, yeah, but what is it actually like?"

...But then it's EXACTLY like that.

I kinda thought they'd have a pretty well integrated tutorial from the trailer. I mean there was that guy teaching the MC how to shoot a bow and what not.

It doesn't mean there won't be a tutorial for basic controls -- they seem to be talking about the actual meat and potatoes of the game's mechanics and how to approach enemies.

That sounds as good as it looked, hopefully it'll be similarly incredible to play.

I just hope the story and characters hold up too!

Crikey! Everytime they describe something about the game it makes me want it more and more! Love the no-hands-held policy.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
Perks?
:(

RPG system means NUMBERS, people. Let me craft bows with better attack.

Please.

oh man it's like they can read my deepest desires for what I want in games

thank the Gods

I know! I keep thinking something will come out that makes it not seem as good or ambitious or large in scope, but every time new info comes, it makes the game sound even better or MORE ambitious!

Great. I still want it to be a hunting game though.. maybe after this is a success they can create a co-op hunting game set in this universe?

Man, that must feel good after 10 years of getting shit for making Killzone lol

I hope Sony gets behind this title in a big way like they started doing in the last couple of years and really push it, it sounds and looks absolutely incredible

won't be 'tutorialised'

I didn't even know this was a term that was used or that I wanted to hear, but it immediately dispels most of my worries. Very cleanly phrased.

"Won't be tutorialised" would be great if it's a Super Mario/Dark Souls style intro where the level design just naturally lets you figure out how things play before you get into the meat of the game, albeit obviously in a safer environment than Souls.

The best part of the demo was the very animated-2d flash lines of the search bots.

This looked super stylish.

I was a bit concerned when we got 'white people in native dress' opening, to be honest. I'm sure that'll turn into a thing.

Everything's sounding great about this. Could be a real breakout new IP if they nail it IMHO.

Feels like a breath of fresh air as a new IP.

This game keeps sounding better and better. I will buy the extreme limited edition if it comes with some of that awesome concept art or a robodino statue!

I never thought in a million years I'd care about a Guerrilla games project, I appreciate them having gameplay in a new IP reveal.

Hope this ends up being as great as the demo made it look.

Did anyone else pickup on the Killzone alarm sound it was making? ;)
