New PS4 model (CUH-1200) announced

So the new PS4 model gets more hot? isnt that something bad?

i mean temps are always varying every second, so the 1-3 degrees difference don't mean anything aside from that was the temp when the pic was taken.

as another poster has said, it is more about heat dissipation.

as far as i know, white would be hottest, green would be coolest.

you can see that the newer model has better(?) heat dissipation as it does not concentrate the heat mostly on the back side but rather spread throughout the emi shielding and then throughout the fan.

don't take my word for it, though.

but yeah, lower power consumption and quieter.

as per google translate, it seems that the camera picked uo more heat from the top maybe because the distance between the surface plastic and the metal sheet inside is smaller so the thermal camera captured the heat.

Well with the ps3 each revision did indeed become cheaper than the version revised. Parts outside were cheaper/worst don't know internally. Microsoft revisions felt like upgrades with 360, they always added not removed.

Well truth be told, original X360 was made like shit due MS's rushing early to the market. Hot central chips popped out due to bad soldering, motherboard twisted itself, DVD drive and PSU could die easily.

Revisions are nice, but I'll wait for a price adjustment because my budget is swamped. Yes, fan noise is annoying, but I can deal with it.

Except for when MS gimped the 360E to remove RGB SCART and VGA support, in favour of composite or HDMI only. Plus that awful piano black chassis nonsense, which was a definite step back.

I love my piano black 360 slim. Just a matter of preference.

Yeah. And I prefer to not give a console the white glove treatment because it'll get covered in scratches otherwise. I treat my stuff well but piano black finishes aren't good in the long-term and seeing it re-introduced on the 360E to match the Xbox One's misstep was disappointing.

Teardown.

Edit: So as 99% people here expected 8Gbit GDDR5 chips are applied instead of 4Gbits.
Edit2: Man there are quite a few changes..

Wow!

PS4 Slim is going to be something special.

Back at launch I was non-plussed with how they could possibly make it smaller. Now I'm a believer.

That is what I am holding out for before I upgrade my launch unit.

The PS4 design is sleek, so I am looking forward to what a "slim" one will look like.

Here some quick translation of that guy's teardown:

New power supply ADP-200ER replaced ADP-240CR and is 80g lighter.
New BD drive.
New 8Gb GDDR5 chips (Samsung K4G80325FB-HC03)
New main board SAC-001 replaced SAB-001 and has 60mm less width.
The APU CXD90037G remains the same.

Following chips existed at previous models are now missing:
- Fujitsu USB 3.0-SATA bridge
- Marvell Ethernet LSI
- Genesys Logic USB 3.0 hub controller LSI

The secondary processor CXD90036G has direct connection to all of them (the guy speculates Sony may have eliminated USB3.0 - SATA conversion).

HDMI transmitter is MN864729 by Panasonic.

Boot system LSI is changed to A00-C0L2 (there seems to be some new patent regarding system control)

Blu-ray drive control subboard is now missing and controller LSI R9J04G011FP1 & motor driver BD7764MUV are now on mainboard.
Cooling fan remains the same (KSB0912HE).

Heatsink's base is changed from aluminum to steel.
The heatpipe existed at heatsink's base remains, but one existed at aluminum fins is now missing.

Is it crazy that the APU hasn't been shrunk yet? Seems weird to me.

Import it. It won't be any different than a US model.

what is the cad to yen conversion rate? ahahaa.

no, really, why would i import it when it's basically the same thing? i'm not going to pay 200$ more for something that will most likely be here by the end of the year.

not really. even the newest amd fiji gpus that just launched this month are still in 28nm.

If Sony really did eliminate USB3.0 - SATA conversion as the guy speculates (current models have internal HDD connection converted to USB3.0 before connected to the core system) then this may increase SSD's performance. But again this is just a speculation..

Oh I agree. I was just thinking if it never comes. However they had a bundle with the PS3 here, so I guess there is hope.

wait, heatsink base is from aluminium to steel instead of the other way around?

isn't that a downgrade? it isn't like steel is cheaper than aluminium.

or did they do that because steel holds heat for longer therefore not all heat will be expelled to the fans every second?

Seems like manufacturing issues at taiwanese foundries are having an impact. Same reason why PC GPUs are still 28nm. Probably a shrinked down design is ready but they can't mass manufacture it with the intended volumes.
Samsung and Intel right now are above everyone else in state of the art chip manufacturing.

Well it is a downgrade if you look material. I think the point is whole cooling system was downgraded to the point where it is enough to cool system produces less power.
We have only countable examples but new model seems to produce far less noise than original one does, even they both have same type of cooling fan (which pretty much is the only source of audible noise during gameplay).

Hmm the new noise reports confirm my concern that the weight reductions were done at the expense of cooling. Maybe $299 is likely now by the end of the year though.
Edit: Or not.

No, and you're weird :p
They can't build APU's smaller than 28nm currently. That die size was actually fairly new when the consoles' launched.
Next year a shrink is viable though. Most big fabs haven't moved down besides Samsung and Intel. Expected to change next year.

Now, someone play TLOU, Bloodborne, etc on this new model and record how the system sounds. That'll be a real tell all on how much quieter the system is.

ahhh...so they downgraded the cooling system because it produces less heat anyway, and consumes less power.

and at the same time, they also did it so the heat threshold wouldn't go over the threshold of the previous model type.

i guess that kinda makes sense, cost-wise.

it's not like if they kept the old cooling system, that the games can use it to push the system even further. that would break older models.

i guess i wanted a cooler system but nonetheless at least it is quieter and draws less power.

just sold my ps4 this morning since I have been unemployed for a while and the bills were pilling up.

will pick up this model in 2016 when all the big games hit :D i am guessing summer 2016 will be a good time to pick it up

Matte is almost certainly a cheaper finish to manufacture. If only because it doesn't need that layer of clear plastic crap to protect it.

So from what I'm reading in this thread, Sony managed to shrink the motherboard significantly, reduce the system's power and noise? Seems quite impressive considering how the Slim model isn't even out yet. That Slim model is gonna look so good.

My system was on an open shelf with plenty of room to breathe on all sides, and his was on a table with plenty of room as well. There is no environmentally factor that could have contributed. If anything his was closer to a warm TV than mine was. Both were playing digital games. Even if that weren't the case the disc only spins for the first few seconds when you start a game once it has been fully installed. Regardless you can't hear a disc spinning in my PS4 once the fan kicks up, as the fan is orders of magnitude louder.

Take your system and place it where his was and play it for a good session and see if it makes as much noise/ heat as when it's in it's current location. I'd wager that you see it run cooler and quieter.

Like I said before, I want to see some videos of someone playing games like Bloodborne, TLOU, etc (games known for making the fan scream) on the new model and compare the noise it makes to the old ones.

Yes, thank you for reminding of a post you made just 12 posts back on the same page. Might have gone unnoticed otherwise, who knows.

It feels like it was only yesterday when you typed it. Because it literally was yesterday.

On topic; I returned my Xbox One to the store yesterday. I am willing to buy the new model of Playstation 4 as soon as possible instead. I might post some impressions as well.

That is DRAMATICALLY different from the data shown at a Sony presentation regarding the PS4's cooling system:

http://vr-zone.com/articles/sony-engineer-unveils-functional-beauty-ps4s-cooling-system/69852.html

PS4-lecture-28.jpg

The fan noise is the thing I hate the most about the PS4, and the reason I have found myself buying the Xbox One version of most multiplatform games... (that and the controller battery life)

EDIT: However I must add that the SmartTool app probably does not give the most accurate noise measurement you can get...

EDIT 2: I like how the CUH1100 model is the noisiest and warmest. Thanks for that revision, Sony, much appreciated ¬_¬

Don't know about dramatically. The top line from Sony's presentation shows the max noise level which sits at ~53dB while the phone test shows 57dB. Also. In which game is the phone test from? Different levels in the same game alone would make the graphs differ.

Apologies sir. Like a lot of these threads they only get bumped when someone comments and a lot of threads get lost in the mix. I mainly restated what I said to bump the thread because I'm quite interested in this subject. If it annoyed you to see a repeat post (much like the gazillions of the same gifs/posts/threads about the same thing) I do apologize.
