I don't know what to say to this. I thought it was a joke hashtag on Twitter when my phone told me #RIPIwata was trending and the first tweet I saw was a joke picture from a fake Hillary account tweeting a picture of George Takei.

I didn't know he was sick. Cancer? Cancer sucks. 😢

Some will say he was a wonderful programmer, who did coding sorcery to get games like Pokemon Gold and Silver onto cartridges that had no business fitting.

Some will say he was a jovial personable man who humanized the often fitful, draconian realm of the video game boardroom.

But I will remember him as the man who ate big pay cuts to keep his staff employed and occupied where other CEOs would throw their people under buses or flee and have someone else desperate to appease shareholders do it instead.

And for that, he will be missed deeply.
Damn, that's amazing I didn't know that. :(

Wow, he was much more ill than he let on but he still led the company to the end. :( Talk about incredible work ethic coupled with passion and endurance. Farewell, Satoru Iwata. You led Nintendo with the heart of a gamer as you yourself put it and you did a great job reaching out to your fans.

I legitimately can't get it into my head that he's dead. Feels like I'll wake up tomorrow and have imagined all of this. God damn man. I never feel like this, ever.

Definitely buying Mario Maker now. There's no way I can own a Wii U and not, anymore.

He was young at 55; biliary cancer is bad though. He never looked that sick though ;he hid it very well.

It will be interesting to see how Nintendo moves on with new leadership, he seemed like a strong willed guy with regards to leadership (my way or the highway). He was a real character ( and a likeable one) in an industry with a lot of unlikeable people( who seem to exist only to fleece gamers) and will be missed. It is a sad day for gaming.

Tragic. He made it sound like his health was staying around the same or slightly improving. Did not expect this at all.

Rest in Peace Iwata.

Just.. No words can come close to how awful this is. RIP.

And yeah, the gaf logo needs to change. Either back to normal or acknowledging this... Just change it from the rainbow thing.

Oh wow. I read the name a couple times to be sure even.

I knew that he passed on some events so I knew something was up, but man.

R.I.P.

I think the last thing he may have said publicly to Nintendo fans was regarding this year's E3:

"We will work better to meet your expectations."

:(

RIP Mr. Iwata. You brought families and friends together with endless joy and entertainment. You will be missed but your legacy will live on through your games.

This is awfully too soon and unexpected. Truly a heavy loss on a well-known figure in the Gaming community. From the moment I started gaming as a kid to today, the names Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Myamoto were names easily known to me as "The Nintendo Men" and to hear this sad news is almost impossible for me to believe.

Very few Presidents of large companies can say that they showcased the same level of passion and enthusiasm in what they do like Mr. Iwata did. It amazes me how this man made strong efforts to DIRECTLY(I say this with no disrespect) speak with the fans and many others. As cheesy as they may be, Nintendo Directs with Iwata always left me with a smile.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Iwata. Thank you for everything.

RIP Iwata. Put smiles on millions of people across the globe. A feat very few men ever accomplish.

With that said, Any idea on the fallout?

Iwata always pushed for their properties to remain on nintendo controlled platforms. The board eventually pressured him into the Dena deal. Iwata also ushered in the blue ocean hardware strategy of not competing via specs but with innovation thus making the Wii the highest selling nintendo platform.

Dont even know what direction Nintendo will go from here
