I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
This hurts. There are legit tears rolling down my face. Rest in peace, Iwata. ;_;

If someone could add the ribbon to my avatar, that'd be awesome. I'm on mobile, so I can't right now.

Sakurai made a tweet sending his condolences. Here's the translation.
Masahiro Sakurai said:
The president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata has passed away. He was my former employer, but even when my situation and location changed, he was always the most understanding [of me and my work]. A hard worker and a virtuous man, he always supplied me with quick, fair guidance. I believe that he was the greatest leader I could have imagined. May you rest in peace.

Maybe out of this tradegy something good will come out of it. Everyone here can agree that Nintendo was languishing and had been directionless as company since the failure of the WiiU. Maybe some new people at the top will take Nintendo to new heights.

Everyone? Honestly ... fuck you.

It may not have been perfect but some fantastic games were made under his leadership. For all we know without him, Nintendo would have turned into some shit mobile company.

Have some respect for the dead.

Very very sad day indeed.

As someone who is not a die-hard Nintendo fan and has not purchased a product from since the GameCube I am shocked. I can only imagine how his fans (millions) are feeling hearing this news. I don't know much about him but from watching him in videos over the past 10-15 years I could tell he was sincere and loved to make people smile.

In retrospect, it's kind of great that Balloon Trip was one of the Nintendo World Championship games, isn't it?

Maybe Nintendo of America already knew how ill Iwata was at that time and they just decided to add that game as part of the repertory of games at the championship... :(

I don't want to believe. :( Earthbound is one of my favorite experiences in any sort of media, and he played a big part in helping it to be as charming as it is. What a sad day.

Batteries the CRISIS!
I've been crying since hearing the news, so I need a bit of an outlet to write this I suppose.

A few years ago a few thought I was kinda crazy because I got super frustrated I wasn't able to meet Mr. Iwata. During E3, I'd just show up too late here or there, always missing the window of opportunity to meet him. I really wanted to meet him because of everything he helped accomplish with Nintendo and I just wanted to say thanks. Call it something akin to meeting an idol or something, I don't know.

Anyway... my husband was lucky enough to work with him when he was in the RWC office and always had the nicest things to say about him. Well, whenever he was in the office, I'd have him take my 3DS to work to get Mr. Iwata's Mii and StreetPass. For SOME reason, he had all the rare puzzle pieces, who'da thunk it! One time when he was in town, I decided to write a private message to him, just for fun. I never thought he'd ever take the time to write something back.

Well, shockingly he did! I'm still stunned he took the time to do so because unlike E3, this is a company/work environment and I imagine he was fairly busy at a CEO.

Now he's passed on and I don't even have the right words. RIP Mr. Iwata, I really did like the banana joke.

That's so cool.

I don't even know what to say. I respected Satoru Iwata more than anyone else in the industry. He was insightful, charismatic, and caring for the industry as a whole. Not only did I enjoy his Iwata asks and directs, but I truly believe Nintendo had some of its best gaming output underneath his wings.

He will truly be missed. I can't ever remember being this effected by a death that is so far removed from me.

RIP, the gamers will miss you and Nintendo will never be the same.

Great story :)

Dude was the real deal.

I don't know if this was posted but it needs to be shared

Add to this, when Iwata was already General Manager of Nintendo (i.e. an extremely high up executive and being groomed to take over as the next move), Sakurai came to him and said Smash Bros. Melee was having trouble and might need to be delayed past Christmas.

What does Iwata do? He checks the code himself. He does such a thorough checking job that the game comes out on time, while still continuing his duties as General Manager.

My second post in this thread. I still can't process this. A few people PM'd me. I tried to think aloud and clear my head.

The man exuded gentleness and a genuine desire to make people happy. All people. You feel that spirit, that love in every game he worked on, directly or indirectly. "Iwata laughs" became a meme. In truth it was the laugh of someone who values kind, innocent fun.

I think that's why he connected with us all. There's no judgment in Nintendo games. Just a warm, inviting sense of unconditional love.

Still can't believe he's gone. But in so many ways, he's not.

A real heartwarming post Neiteio.

You know what hurts? That the last thing Iwata said to us was "Sorry"
Honestly, this just makes me respect him even more. You know how many people in this world are completely incapable of saying "Sorry"? The man cared so much for gamers and never wanted to let anyone down. That means something to me.

Oh man, it means all the more that you screenshot'd that exchange.

Iwata really does seem like he was a really friendly, approachable guy in real life despite his CEO status.

I'm deeply saddened by this news... I saw the thread title, hoped for a hoax and then saw the number of pages in the thread. My heart completely sank.
