When kids talked about their Uncle Nintendo, they were probably talking about Satoru Iwata.

;_;

My stomach is still in knots over this.

Sigh.. you will be missed 。゚(゚´Д`゚)゚。

あなたがいなくて寂しいです。。。

This is so sad to hear. I had no idea he was this ill, and no matter what he always had the gamers in his mind even until the end. He brought some truly magical things to the world and will be sorely missed.

Well, I'm finally calming down. Hard to imagine the death of anyone else I've never met affecting me this much.

And if someone could ribbon my avatar I'd be really thankful.

Wow... I knew he had health issues, but I did NOT expect him to leave us so soon.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Iwata. Thank you for giving me an enjoyable childhood.

May I also have an Iwata Ribbon?

....I kind of want to flood the Smash fighter ballot with requests for Iwata, but I think it's best to remember the man for what he was.

Besides, I can't think of anything more painful for Sakurai than to have to make a friend into a video game.

That would break the poor man's heart more than it probably already is...

I wonder what will happen now, with Iwata's desire for Sakurai to take over EAD Tokyo.

At least one that can get beaten up.

I could see him being down with putting an Iwata trophy in at some point, though.

I just wish I could do more to honor him. I'm still in so much shock over this, I keep crying and then sitting here with a wave of emotions just hitting me at once.

Is there like, any essays or biographies I could read about Iwata? I just want to think about the great things he did.

Also, Sakurai won't do it because he thinks that not what Iwata would want.

Kinda wish I didn't read about his cancer, it makes me more sad that he was hiding it. Basically he knew he was limited on time since diagnosed with it.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Just saw this thread. Terrible news :(

RIP

I just... and this will sound selfish here, but bear with me...

I just wish we'd known how serious it was before the end. I know that I was clueless, I think most were. If we had known even a week ago what state he was in, the outpouring of love and good wishes from all around the world would have been overwhelming. I would have liked him to have seen that. For someone who didn't have kids to be with him there at the end, I think that would have meant something. I'm sure he knew he was beloved, but even just for our sake I wish we could have sent those messages. I really do...

What's so depressing about this for me is that Iwata was pretty much a living, breathing representation of everything Nintendo stood for as a company.

Thinking back to the Wii and DS eras, both were created because Iwata wanted to create brand new experiences for players that they hadn't experienced before in the face of the growing hardware arms race that he felt wasn't actually doing anything to further the experiences players could have. Whether or not they ended up being what some players wanted (and there certainly were some people who didn't like Nintendo's direction at the time), they became what they were because Iwata wanted to do what he thought was best for games and the people who play them.

Lord knows Iwata and Nintendo could be frustrating in their stubbornness and their inability or refusal to adapt to certain trends. But everything Iwata was about, creating fun games and worlds, developing new experiences for players, and just in general having the time of their lives making whatever they were making, was everything Nintendo was about, and the philosophy that's made so many of my best memories growing up, and have continued to give me countless hours of joy up until this day. And now that he's gone, for the first time, I'm wondering if they're ever going to be quite the same again.

RIP iwata. The industry was better for having you in it.

Quoted for awesomness.

I have never been so devastated by a death of someone I never met. This man contributed so much to my happiness. RIP you beautiful person.

Any chance I can get one of those ribbons?

Honestly, I expect Sakurai to cut ties with Nintendo and maybe game development after Smash DLC is done. Everything from 2007 on has been Iwata believing that his friend is one of the best designers in the world and doing his best to ensure he has somewhere to express his creative designs.

With everything that has happened with his stress and his health, I think Sakurai might think it best to work as a consultant from here on out.

This is so stunning. I had no idea that he was sick at all! Unbelievable... I have a lot of respect for the man, even if I didn't agree with his/Nintendo's decision making. May he rest in peace.

When I first saw this thread earlier I definitely thought it must be one of those account suicides using a fake title, still can't believe it. I wonder if much will change at Nintendo, and how prepared they were for this.

I'll add the ribbon to my avatar later when I'm not on mobile.
