Man.. This hits me so hard :( still can't believe we're not getting more Iwata asks...

End of an era.

Thanks so much for everything, Iwata.

I obviously have no personal connection to the man. And yet I just experienced the most horrible sinking feeling of pressure & nausea in my abdomen...a deep sadness welling up from somewhere to fill my entire body. It feels like such a real loss.

I can't explain this with logic or reason.

So I do not think I will try.

We will all miss you Iwata San.

Honestly, I don't think you can ever really prepare yourself for something like this. No matter how much you know it's coming, a part of you will always hope for even 1 more day. It's not an entirely rational thing, so you can't ever be completely prepared

One thing that will always sit with me was when my father, who knew he was dying for quite a while and had seemingly come to terms with it, said in his final hours "I'm not ready, I'm not ready." His final coherent words, in fact. Of course he wasn't ready. :( But even a man with time to cope could not truly cope with the end of his life.

You came into the videogame business with a dream a dream of bringing joy to many and to make a name for yourself. You rose up in the ranks and became president and earned it, you continued to bring joy and happiness to millions of fans around the world.

You made peoples childhoods and spoke to the inner child in all of us.You cared about the consumer and the company and its employees. And I know you felt by the end of your life you let us down because of E3 but trust us you didn't.

I hope your spirit can find peace in knowing you did not let us down you did the opposite you made millions happy and sometimes we take that for granted. Your good deeds have not gone unrewarded you will be dearly missed, you're a icon and a gaming legend and while you may be in another castle your influence and love for gaming still reaches us and will continue to do so for years and years to come.

Rest in peace Iwata, you were one hell of a guy.

I honestly think his cancer was terminal and he didn't want the world to know. He never really got cured and just went about his business. The same thing happened to Steve Job, his cancer was terminal, but he told the world it was "hormonal imbalances" that caused his weight loss. When you have a sudden weight loss due to cancer thats it, no chemo will save you. It makes sense about having puppets in thr Nintendo E3 and Iwata not shown anywhere. The man was extremely ill and wanted to be with his family in his last moments.

Edit: can I also get a ribbon memorial for my avatar. Much appreciated, GAF.

Did my best! Noob at photoshop here...hope this helps!

He seemed like the kind of person that didn't take himself too seriously. Someone that knew when to lighten up.

Rest in peace, Satoru Iwata.

That's a secret of life: to not take everything so damn seriously. A basic question we have to ask about anything going on is "is it serious?"

Many of the things we assume are serious really are not. I feel from what was publicly showcased of Iwata that he knew this, too.

Now that I let this sink in....despite posting in this thread already, I want to give Iwata a greater thank you :').

When I was very young, I had bad frustration issues with games and despite owning multiple systems when I was little like the Game Boy Color, Nintendo 64 and even the Sega Dreamcast, I could never get into them and just got more angry.

But in 2002, I got my Nintendo GameCube and while my first games were Sonic titles (Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle), I also played a lot of Nintendo games of course :). Kirby Air Ride, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Sunshine brought me really happy memories and stand next to the Sonic titles as GameCube games I really enjoyed. So, I want to thank Nintendo for getting me to enjoy and love gaming, as if it wasn't for the GameCube, I would have never been interested in gaming now.

I remember the day I got my Nintendo Wii back in early 2007. Me, my mom and my sister traveled from Franklin Square all the way to New York City's Nintendo World, as that was the only place they had a Wii. After playing Twilight Princess at a local GameStop a few months prior, I wanted a Wii due to how interesting it felt and played.

After a long while of traveling on buses and trains, we got to Nintendo World and waited on a long line to pick up the Wii. After waiting a while, my mom got me my Wii and I had the biggest grin on my face. It was such a happy day and look back on it as a time where I really, truly loved Nintendo :').

While I fell out with Nintendo over the years and more recently got back into there work thanks to the Nintendo 2DS, I highly respect Iwata's leadership at making games fun. People want to make games look better, sound better, and want to play around with Free to Play methods to get more money. But Nintendo is never like that; they make a game and make sure its fun.

To this day, they are still doing that and future projects like Super Mario Maker just highlight how fun Nintendo's games are :'). Looking back at this E3, I feel horrible for being so critical of Nintendo. I had my issues with them, but I wouldn't have been so aggressive with my issues if I knew Iwata was so ill :'(. I get why Reggie was so defensive of Iwata's 'apology' now and why his tone was so aggressive now and I feel bad at some of Iwata's final images was me being so negative toward Nintendo X(.

Iwata has done a lot for the industry, from his amazing programming work with Earthbound and Pokemon Gold/Silver too his work at bring the Kirby series to life. Not to mention his leadership during the Wii and DS era, which was one of the strongest era's Nintendo's ever had with their software output, with games that really used the motion/touch screen to great lengths.

I just want to say, Thank You :'). Iwata has had a tremendous impact on the gaming landscape and I prey his family, co-workers and friends recover from such loss.

Thank you for giving me tons of amazing memories of jumping on Koopa's with Mario, traveling through dark space stations with Samus, having dog-fights with Fox and the gang, hunting ghosts with Luigi, tracing paths for a ball Kirby, having fun fights in Smash and letting me explore the sky with Pit.

It's really sad to see a man with such a strong legacy go and I hate to think the failure of the Wii U and the shareholder pressure may have contributed to his ailing health.
What makes it even more sad is that he made some surprising and bold moves in the last years with the new PR approach (Nintedo Direct/Treehouse Live) and partnership with DeNa.

I'm happy before he left us, its looking bright for Nintendo after those last years a Wii and WiiU not doing as well, Nintendo is back to making a profit, Amiibo is huge, DeNa deal Nintendo is about to make a ton in mobile, new account system and Nintendo loyalty program and NX.

He left Nintendo with a positive future after all the doom and gloom

Very last thing Iwata has said publicly:

In addition, regarding the possibility of making all titles available on Virtual Console, I can say that it is possible for Nintendo titles with a few exceptions, since we generally have the intellectual property rights for such titles. However, as to third-party software publishers’ titles, if they are producing the software based on a license from another copyright holder, for example, we may not be able to easily use the same title for the system that exists now because we do not have a license from the copyright holder at the time. This often becomes a problem with reruns of TV shows or Internet broadcasting. Therefore, since we can only release Virtual Console titles of third-party software publishers if they come to an agreement with the copyrights holders upon negotiating terms and conditions that were not included in their original contract, please understand that there are some titles that we cannot easily release despite many requests. We will make our best efforts to satisfy our consumers with our Virtual Console title lineup.

This news really hit me hard, I actually didn't realize how much of an impact Nintendo has made on my life. I think I now know I'm an eternal fan no matter what.

I really didn't need to see this. Tearing up again.

As someone who has lost someone incredibly important to me to Cancer, I'll conur that it's a cruel, unpredictable beast. You can learn the hard way that 'remission' just means 'We don't see it anymore' and not 'We beat it forever!'. Iwata may have known he'd be unable to beat it and that his days were numbered, and opted to make what time he had left about what he loved rather than casting a light on his own plight.

Sometimes people just want to live out their time without being defined by their illness.
Reminds me of when Nintendo gave relief support after the 2011 earthquake but didn't make an announcement or a big deal about it.

Just got home and learned the news. I was just completely and utterly stunned. I might not have always agreed with how he ran Nintendo, but dammit, I was always on his side, hoping that he'd guide it back to glory. Too soon god dammit, too soon :(

Thank you for the memories Mr. Iwata :(

I'm glad to see such an outpouring of love and compassion not only in remembrance of Satoru Iwata and his legacy, but also among the community for all of those whose lives were deeply affected by Nintendo's games, past or present. It goes to show that for all the bickering and fighting we normally engage in, we are still a community that can be brought together, not only in mourning, but through the celebration of a great man who gave us all so much happiness over the years.

We see the bickering and fighting when we go online to chat, because we go online to chat in order to bicker and fight, not to agree on obvious things. And that time spent bickering by a few hardcore folks online is dwarfed 100 fold by the amount of time people around the world spend having amazing, fun, and social experiences with video games; on their own, with friends, with family.

We should never forget that.

I just remembered...I just finished replaying Earthbound 3 days ago. My Wii U Save State is still on the credits. Think I need to watch them again...
