I feel like Samus is the only clearly bad character who has not received any attention yet. Coupled with the fact that Sakurai once called her the best character in the game, I have to wonder what's going on with her.

Ridley fans would probably call it a conspiracy.

I believe he said she was the strongest, not the best.

I mean, she's not, but I believe that was the wording.

In case it hasn't been posted yet: http://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/3f8hvn/the_v110_patch_changelist/

Data-miners have a system in place that can tell us which characters and moves have changes now, allowing us to test for objective differences and remove placebos much faster. It doesn't (yet) account for projectile/pikmin/luma changes, nor patched glitches, but it's a huge help. That link is the confirmed change list so far.

Also of note is that it appears Pikachu's custom infinite with thunder wave was patched out, which changes the conversation surrounding customs quite a bit.

Looking at the Shulk change, does that mean that back slash is faster now?

They used Tales of Symphonia music in the Mii Wave trailer. Wonder if that could mean anything for that series' future in Smash?
Probably just music, at least for this game.

Reading those Ganondorf buffs...they don't realize raw power isn't why Ganondorf sucks, do they?
I mean, those changes help a little...but not much. His problem isn't that he needs to land a lot of hits to win, its that he can't land those hits in the first place.

Also, I noticed Mii Fighters can actually exit Dedede's Final Smash now. Not sure if that was in there before, but if it was, I've never done it as any other character.

1. The Wario song came from a fellow Mario puzzle game series, and was the song used in Picross DS for its Mario Picross DLC.

2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e3Mvh4qcuQ

3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz8rU7nZJPE

The lack of ANYTHING relating to the non-WarioWare Wario stuff made me think of that leak being fake. Yes, there are Wario related things in Dr. Mario like Wario in 64, and Dr. Wario from WarioWare, but come on, ouside of Wario's overalls alt, and the Wario Land Shake It song in gamer, there's nothing else aside the WarioWare games for Wario.

I wake up to hear that there is no offline tournaments.... WHAT.

That was gonna be my 1v1 mode of choice for everything as all the modes already included are Free for All. =C

I don't remember it exactly either, that could just be interpretation/translating differences at that point anyway. Regardless, the fact that he thought that is confusing. Makes me wonder if the rest of us are missing something...

Looking at the Shulk change, does that mean that back slash is faster now?

The wording's a little unclear there, but that's my understanding, yes. The hit animation comes out 6 frames faster now.

His down-b from the air breaks shields now, that helps a lot with landing hits.

Plus, I think Ganondorf's schtick is being looming and making the opponent make mistakes you can capitalize on. It's like Puff with rest, except every move. If you want him to be about approaching instead of punishing, you'd have to seriously weaken his attacks to balance him, because he's super strong as is.

He'll never be top tier, that'll always be the faster characters, but if you change that he wouldn't be Ganondorf :p

The problem is that he isn't very good at what he does. He doesn't hit hard unless he lands a smash attack, which no one is really dumb enough to let him land in high level play. They could give him armor on some of his attacks, and it would be more interesting. He desperately needs more grab range.

Yeah, but Melee Ganondorf was a lot better while still being generally slow. This Ganondorf is just too god damn slow. I mean, he's always been a punisher. I wouldn't compare him much to Jiggs-I think Mac is probably the closest character to Jiggs due to the KO punch-but right now he's just too damn slow. I think there's a high amount of speed they could give Ganondorf before he became a really offensive approaching-type character.

I think they've really got two choices for Ganondorf: try to make him more like Melee-speedier, better recovery, but less powerful-or keep going the route where he has a bit more power. And if they go this route, they really should give him some armor.

Didn't Sakurai say those were close to the last during the big pre-E3 presentation? Seems like you're in for some harsh withdrawal in the future :p

According to the translation of the 6/14 video, Sakurai said "I don't think we can add too many more stages" (and then announcing the stages we got with the latest update).

KB buff for Sheik is good. Those FAir strings are painful.

Also why the fuck are they continuously nerfing Sonic's kill options? He's fucking fine as is.

At least they buffed WFT to the fucking moon.

All righty, my thoughts on the new patch:

It's mostly pretty good! It ably serves its purpose as a nice stopgap update between major additions like new characters. As others have said, though, everything about this patch just feels "off" in a way... it's just weird, considering how it was announced so suddenly and with zero fanfare, and how there was barely any official acknowledgement of it all. I'm guessing Nintendo is still in a state of disarray from Iwata's passing. :(

That said, there's some great stuff here! The two new stages are both great. I never liked Peach's Castle much back in Smash 64, but for some reason I'm finding it a lot more entertaining here. It feels... bigger, I think? A little roomier? Probably not, but it just feels like a more balanced, comfortable stage than it did back in Smash 64.

Hyrule Castle was pretty much my favorite stage back in Smash 64 and I've wanted to see it return ever since returning stages first became a thing in Melee. Suffice to say, I'm thrilled to finally have it back and it's just as awesome as ever. <3

Also, this point has already been belabored but I have to mention it: the music selections for both new stages are fucking FANTASTIC. The new Zelda medley is pure aural sex, the new Super Mario 64 main theme rearrangement is quite nice, and I love retro game music and chip music in general, so I couldn't be happier with the SMB 2 and SMB 3 ground themes and the Zelda 1 and A Link to the Past overworld themes!

Tourney Mode is pretty nice, with a few glaring and unfortunately unsurprising oversights, such as not being able to create our own 1v1 tourneys. I knew they'd get this wrong, but seriously, what the fuck? :(

Oh well, Tourneys are pretty cool outside of that and a couple other confusing omissions. I'd say I hope these oversights get addressed in future patches, but I'm confident they won't. It's weird... Sakurai gets so, so much right and is undoubtedly one of the industry's leading, most passionate visionaries, but he really screws the pooch when it comes to almost anything related to online play. Also, I really, really love that Sakurai specifically develops these games without the hyper-competitive segment of the fanbase in mind, but damn I'm getting tired of him pushing 3-minute timed matches as the standard. It's an awful format in every way. :(

The only aggressively disappointing part of this patch for me is the YouTube upload feature. I was seriously looking forward to this and, in hindsight, probably should have known they wouldn't get this right or that they'd implement it in an incredibly half-baked fashion. But for whatever reason, I thought it'd be great... and not only is it not great, it's thoroughly disappointing. A time limit of three minutes and 45 seconds means this is only useful to people who play Sakurai's 2-minute timed "standard" format (which is... who, again?), and the max (well, only) quality being 720p/30fps is... well, it just feels backwards. Like I said, I should've guessed that Nintendo wouldn't knock this out of the park, and that's on me... but I also feel like they could have done better than this. I could even overlook the 720p/30fps thing and the long upload times if it wasn't for that ridiculously short time limit. Guess my dreams of not having to use my capture card to record and upload matches have been shattered. :p

I grabbed the Lloyd and Flying Man costumes and am very happy with them. Lloyd in particular looks great. Hoping the Mega Man fanservice returns with wave 4, though - we (or at least I) still need costumes for MegaMan Trigger/Volnutt, Shooting Star Mega Man, Bass, Roll, and MMZ-style Zero!

Also, what a shame that Dr. Mario stage wasn't real... they totally had me. I was looking forward to it. But the fake was so good that I can't even be mad about it. Kinda like ArtsyOmni's Rayman leak... but the difference here is that I really wanted this stage. I was relieved as fuck when I found out Rayman was fake. :p

Overall, for me it's a perfectly good patch with one crushing disappointment (YouTube) and a few minor, but unfortunate issues with an addition I otherwise like (Tourneys). Everything else is fine, though, and I love the new stages and music. Honestly, there will never be enough of new stages. I hope what Sakurai said about them not being able to add to many more somehow ends up not being the case...

I'm pretty happy that Mega Man's Leaf Shield can be activated (& be fired) a lot quicker. I know that not a lot of people like playing as the Blue Bomber, but it makes me happy that one of the least used weapons in his arsenal is going to get a lot more use from here on out.

As a fellow Mega Man main, I'm happy as well! I've never been able to work Leaf Shield into my routine in a particularly effective way, and this (minor) buff might help with that. It's not a great move to begin with, so it's only right that it at least be quick to use.

I still think Mega Man needs significant attention with regard to the ending lag on his smashes, since literally all but one of his kill moves is incredibly unsafe. But oh well, what can you do. At least he didn't get nerfed!

I know right, its pretty darn rad. You guys are drunk. This update is pretty awesome, I may end up playing more Smash than Splatoon.... for a week!

My only wish is for 1v1 Tourneys. And I wish they had more Tournaments starting more often, everything is full until the next 30 minutes!

Yeah, the Tourney hate is overblown. It definitely needs some work and there are some glaring oversights, but I'm pretty happy with it in general!

They don't even have to be new ones even though that would be awesome.

I feel like we will still get quite a few.
At least as long as they keep releasing new characters. So far they have focused on 64 only. 2 from Brawl and Melee each sounds good.

edit: not to mention new stages too.

Yeah that sounds reasonable. Plus even if the leak was fake I'm sure we'll get that Dr. Mario stage eventually, as well as the Rhythm Heaven stage even if Chorus Kids don't appear.

I'm such a glutton for Smash DLC.

Also Sah there's a link on the previous page I think to a reddit changelog.

Man, waking up to hear Tournament Mode is online only is a real downer. I was getting hyped for that feature.

Thanks to Balladofwindfishes for the heads-up on the Bayonetta wig, I've already got a Bayo mii who will benefit.

So what I'm gathering then is Dr Mario was fake, characters were re-balanced, the tourney mode kind of sucks ass and that is all?

Chrom's hair ;-)
Purely by accident too. I had a Zero Suit Samus Mii who I was flicking through the choices with to add the Samus helmet, and came to the Chrom wig and noticed it looked a lot like Bayonetta.

Anyway, the music on Hyrule Castle is pretty boring. Why the Link To The Past low res SNES rip, when a Saria's Song remaster has been sitting in Melee, unused sincere Great Bay? Also the new song is the same songs used for the other Zelda Medley in the game, except they added a small Zelda's Lullaby to the end of the song and made the whole thing Latin, which isn't even a new concept for Zelda remixes.

Peach's Castle is also missing a song. For some reason.

Online tournament mode is pretty awesome. It gives you the ability to group with random people and keep battling them without actually adding them until the tournament is over. Pretty sweet.

Wait WHAT?
Tournaments are online only

1v1 tournaments are "with anyone" only and have stupid rules like time out stalemate

Recordings can't be more than 3 min and take forever to upload despite terrible quality

The fun community tournaments are just free for alls

Great update! At least you can pay $2 to play on a collection of giant polygons you played on 20 years ago lol

it's kind of silly, but it feels weird using characters who weren't in 64 on the new stages

It just feels off for some reason. I did Toon Link vs Lucas on Hyrule and had a strange feeling about the battle.

I think it's because with Kongo and Dreamland those stages were in Melee and I got used to new characters being on them. Because I don't feel odd on those stages with newer characters.

Also running N64 items only makes me miss the fan and red shell. Even if I didn't care for them lol

Oh my I am so hooked on this tournament mode. LOL. I haven't stayed up all night playing smash since... since FOREVER AGO.

I was playing in this Online tournament room called EVO2016, which uses evo settings and well. I'm ranked 11th with like 13 other people with one win. I've played 20 matches so far. Pretty tough. The two leaders are tied and have 4 wins each so far.

I gotta sleep tho. I have no idea how I'm not actually tired yet. But I know I need to sleep. lol.
