It's a shame that no other TV manufacturer came up with an Ambilight competitor or licensed the technology from Philips.

Just received delivery of a Benq 1070 yesterday. Trialling it out ..

Driveclub .. even in ambient light ... is jawdropping. Can actually drive in-car now without crashing :)

It can compensate for poor black levels on a display in the dark, and they can also be programmed to work like Ambilight.
Then there's the decorative aspect, but that's a matter of taste.

Is there a reason to put a back light on a TV?

A bit easier on for the eyes too, than complete dark room, and you can get some ambient light without it reflecting from the screen.

Source: I have had a backlight for 4 days.

Do you really use it with the projection hitting your TV like that? I have a 1070 myself, and I love it. I was a bit worried, going from a 1600p monitor to a 1080p projector, but downsampling from 2560x1440 in Witcher 3 still looks fantastic. I finally got a proper screen for it, too, and it looks much better than using the wall.

Or get the Dioder from Ikea for 30 bucks. That's what I use.

That's what I use for my plasma TV. To be fair, it doesn't match the colors being displayed on screen. That wasn't what I was looking for in particular when I bought the Dioders, so it works for me and my application.

Where I do my gaming, I think I have posted in here before but I've had some recent changes:

Some of the photos were taken at different times as I've updated certain things in each photo, in case you see something different (wallpapers, hardware, chair, etc).

Hi all. I've been browsing through these pages looking for inspiration, but am coming up short. I wonder if you can help: what can you recommend for an affordable/sturdy TV stand that doesn't take up much room? I live in a bedroom and my 50" is currently on a desk, which is way more space than it needs to take up. The Expedit/Kallax cube is nice, but I don't know if the slots would be big enough for my PS4, which gets awfully hot. I don't really have a budget, but this is not something that needs to be exorbitantly expensive. Based in the US.

I'd still need somewhere to put my game systems and some A/V stuff. And a wall mount can't work...or at least I don't trust these walls. I live in an apartment complex that is uhhh...not perfect. And a wall mount would cost about as much as your average big-box TV stand, so it's not like it's insanely expensive.

The new Ikea Besta system is incredibly customizable now.

That seems to meet the needs of what I was looking for in an earlier comment. I assume it's the Lack TV stand from IKEA? Do you find there's enough room for the PS4 to remain sufficiently cool? Further, do you find the viewing angle isn't too top-down? I find that my current set-up is just about right in terms of viewing angle, but it's a solid 18" higher than this stand.

GAF I need some opinions about our TV and couch setup!
My gf and I are thinking about changing the room setup but we can't really decide if it would be better.
Currently it's like this:

Or as in this old photo that I posted in this thread:
73ebKWwl.jpg

But we think we're too far from our 48'' TV and won't have the money for a bigger one before long.
So we're hesitating about buying the Ikea Nittorp Tv bench instead of the Expedit we have and setting everything up like that:
8Gr1Fynl.jpg

Plus I don't think the Expedit is really good for consoles in terms of airflow...

What do you think GAF? Should we change our living room?

I feel like a total buster posting my setup.

Now I kinda want to look for a corner at home so I can make my gaming setup like this. Looks simple but comfy and that's exactly what I'm always looking for when gaming. I agree that this setups is ideal for streaming. Lot's of freedom to move around and such.

Second layout is better but still looks too far away. I wouldn't sit more than 5 or 6 feet from a tv that size.

How about putting the TV against the wall facing the balcony door? In your plan, the TV seems crowded side by side with the balcony door ( or window?), the sofa is not centered to the TV, and there maybe sun light leak in from the curtains during day time.

Was just about to ask if anyone has the Ikea Lappland. Would I be able to fit a PS4/PS3/Xbox One on the left side shelves, and are the middle shelves able to be raised? They look a little low for something I'd want to fit below my TV.

Yes they will!

The advantage of the second layout is that we can place the couch closer or further according to our preference since it doesn't have to be back against the wall.
The more I look at it the more I prefer it too.

Yeah it should have been the obvious choice, but there isn't enough plugs in that area of the room, it sucks... It would make things a lot harder and messier.
I don't like it either that the TV would be in that little space between the window and the wall, it's the only real con of that layout but I think it could work. Currently the couch is not centered anyway haha...
The sun should not be a problem as long as we close the curtains well.

It's called Sweet Home 3D, it's free and quite easy to use. Plus you can download 3D models from Google 3D warehouse and import them in it. There's almost every piece of furniture from Ikea and a lot of other stuff too, very cool.

Yeah it's the Lack. I think it is fine for the PS4, the air comes out from behind and there is enough space (other story with an Xbox One). I have a 50 inch and I'm totally ok with it, maybe a little bit higher would be better, but just few cm, so almost nothing. Previously I had a 42", and with that I definitely needed something higher than this one.

The problem with your proposed setup is that you're moving the TV from the middle of your view and moving it to the left. While it works it's not optimum. The space between the tv and couch currently, is it 6-7 feet? If so that's the recommended distance to sit.

Yeah that's what is bothering me a little, I think we'll buy the new TV bench and see if we like it in real life...
The space from our seat to the TV is actually around 2,85 meters which is a little more than 9 feet, so it's really a little bit too far.

Since I bought a Wii U last month, I cleaned up and reorganized my setup.
Nothing fancy here, but damn it's a pain to hookup all those devices. The PC is outside the room and hooked to the receiver.

My Couch, you can notice the ghetto stands for the back satellites :

Two Orioto pieces I framed, I have three others who need to be framed and I will hang them all on the wall.

I'd be tempted to do that too - and then put another activity next to the balcony doors, like a reading chair or breakfast table? something that can benefit from some nice scenery and natural light.

Just finished setting everything up and a lot of organizing is still needed.

Just bought the house and the feature that sold me was the 4th bedroom being upstairs which is my game/TV room :) (yes, its messy right now)

Mother of god. I don't even want to know how much that cost you.

... but I'm about to by a house and THIS is the kind of setup I want. lol

Well, if you can do some of the work (building the decks, wiring, etc.) and look for deals online, you can get away with a reasonable price. Not cheap, but not crushingly expensive either.
