Phil Spencer "I honestly don't goal the team on how many units Sony sells"

Xbox One is a the weaker console and I don't see it ever getting out of second place.

I also don't particularly mind that either. Its my only games machine and I'm more than satisfied with it. And being behind Sony has lit a fire under MS.

Its a real shame more people can't just be happy with that instead of making embarrassing console warrior posts.

Becoming emotionally invested in a product or company is really sad and also really prevalent in the gaming community.

Pretty sure I'd be just as happy with a PS4 but I'm a fan of MS first party games and will probably stay in their ecosystem. Damn you Gears KI and Halo..

Consoles are alive and well.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer's words create Sony fanboy circle-jerk on GAF. More on this at 10.

Whatever they are doing there I hope they keep doing whether they are trying to beat Sony or not.

That's a good way of looking at things imo.
It's the only way Phil Spencer (and the rest of the Xbox division, to be fair) can look at things publicly without being laughed out of the room. Winning this generation was never going to be in play once Don Mattrick set this lorry wreck in motion. I give Spencer the credit for yanking things back on track for the XBone, and being realistic about its place in the market.

Stay in your lane, work on creating exclusive content, and keep your head down. This humbling is good for them and great for the gaming community.

Personally, I think considering the fact the Xbox One is exceeding the 360 sales at this point of the cycle and the fact there are no major hardware defects is enough for Xbox One to be in a pretty good position. And Phil Spencer throwing serious weight behind getting cool exclusives is way better then "lol here's some exclusive DLC" last gen.

I like where Microsoft is sitting as a company. It's a box that can play all the big third party titles and Microsoft invests big on exclusives. I really just want more indies and removal of the whole launch parity thing on games (like seriously it's hard for indies to target multiple platforms at once and expecting them to add shit to their game just to be on your platform with a smaller install based doesn't make sense), but I'm A-Ok with everything else Microsoft is doing this generation!

Mods lurking.....Killer getting the hammer. Might come back with an alt...lol...

Gotta give props to many avoiding list wars....baits all over the place. And funny thing is, some will cry wolf after the incitement.

As for Phil's comments... just PR. He does PR practically every time he speaks to the public about the Xbox business.

Does he want to lead in market-share in the U.S? Hell yes and that's an internal goal within Xbox. So Xbox One overtaking PS4 sales, at least in the U.S market is definitely an internal goal.

I will go as far as say he's lying in that regard. Worldwide sure, he knows there is absolutely no chance in hell (unless Sony goes belly-up tomorrow - and that is not happening).

I feel like since sony got back on top they have been very lacking with the system updates.

Ps3 they worked hard to keep up with the 360 with in game xmb, trophies and they tried so hard it get cross game chat. but now as a fan I feel ignored when we ask for external hdd and folders.

Second place brings out the best in a company

I can't believe the thread devolved into List Warz, but yeah, I bought (imported) a 360 for "little" Japanese shoot 'em ups

This thread had list warz on it from the start. As soon as I read the title it was obvious what would happen.

it actually might be because of two MS policies. the first being the parity clause and the second requiring games to be locked into XBL only playlists/servers. specifically, no cross-play with the Playstation user base.

If you think Sony would let this happen also you are probably a bit crazy. Neither Sony or MS want cross play across their eco system. They are ok with cross play with PC, but no way they allow it across Xbox and PS.

Well they certainly don't ignore how well the PS4 is doing so I don't think this is completely true. I know for a fact that they watch PS4's success very closely and aim not to fall too far behind.

It'd be stupid to think they like not being the market leader.

It really is that simple. It is refreshing to hear it so simply stated.

Considering where they were at the back end of 360 and early XB1 days, they've come a long way. I went from not wanting anything to do with Xbox at all to really liking the direction they're taking things. Their investment in first party is starting to pay off, and they're putting a lot of effort into overhauling the software side of things and adding features.

They got complacent last generation, so now being behind the pack leader is yielding some nice changes to try and get back ahead. I'm really excited about Gears, Forza, Halo, and Tomb Raider to close out the year. And 2016 looks really promising.

It's always a good thing when a console manufacturer gets humbled. Sony had the same thing last time around with the PS3 launched, and they battled back by changing management, slowly building to a great first party lineup, culminating with a new and refreshed approach with PS4. MS is in a similar spot now, and they're taking the lessons they learned to heart.

The thing is, Sony had some features, like sharing, in place right at launch, which Microsoft had to add later on. Hence the need for more updates. The PS4 is still lacking in some aspects, like PNG screenshots and external HDD support, but so is the XBO when it comes to fast installs. Both of them lacked USB media playback feature at launch, and are constantly changing to meet the demand, just like it was last gen.

Yeah even they know they cant catch up to Sony.

That's a forgone conclusion at this point, and honestly, I think it's making the Xbox organization better because of it. They're doing some really great mid-generation stuff recently, and when the boxes drop in price enough for the super-normals to jump in I think it will pay off for them, but catching the PS4 doesn't seem feasible given the alienation of core fans that happened at launch.

They'll get another shot when XB2 launches and they better damn well know that hardware capability matters by that point. Resolution-gate, while overblown, should still sting even that far out.

Well i didn't see a majority doing anything you describe but it's pretty natural to laugh when someone says something ridiculous and call them out for it.

He would never say this in an actual board meeting

I think Phil is right not "goaling" the team with Sony's numbers. If everyone on the team is beneath him, their primary goal should be creating the best, most compelling system out there (including games, features, etc.). The "team" shouldn't be worried about numbers.

However, I'm sure Nadella (or whoever Phil reports to) is using Sony's numbers to "goal" Phil and whoever helps him make decisions for the Xbox division. That's their job. Someone is definitely using the highest number as the bar - if you don't think that, you're kidding yourself. The highest number is what you seek to attain, competitively.

FFXIV says otherwise, Sony had no problem with cross-play in that game unlike MS.

Joke post? M.S. haven't released anything all year! Are folks still using the same old bogus argument that only western AAA retail games during the holidays count?

Microsoft haven't release anything all year?

Or anything that counts for you? Because there's a difference.

FFXIV is also cross play with PC, not with XB1. I clearly stated in my post that they are ok with cross play with PC.

Square are looking into having it on XB1 and others and maybe all sides will come to agreement due to it being an MMO, but as of now platforms do not want to split access like that with most games.

Of course not. I see no reason why they should anyway? Sony has nothing to do with Square's servers for FFXIV, they only provide a platform to start the game. Everything else that is online and beyond PSN should not bother Sony. Now take MS. Why don't they allow crossplay? Why must every online game in their Azure Cloud farm? Is it because they want to guarantee best performance? Is it because they want more control over the content? Or is it just because to feed more of their data kraken like they do it (again) with Win10 and not long ago with mandatory Kinect and always-online on Xbone?

this is a good post, i dont know Phi's exact job description so I don't know how accurate it is, but the theme is right on point.

Also highest "number" is variable and depends on goals, but as someone earlier posted, most money comes from subs and software, so market share does matter in this industry.

God's had his chance.
It's funny watching grown ass adults on the world stage basically pull the "I could do that but i don't want to" kind of shit lol

Yea, Phil. It's cool.. no ones counting ;)

They probably still can invest in a Shunmue 3 Xbone port. Sony is only paying for the PS4 port and marketing.

MS are better off paying for japanese game ports. There is no way they can compete with the 3rd party efforts on PS4 with exclusive games. And that is probably not happening. If you want japanese games get a PS4.
The Xbone is being outsold by PSTV in Japan. Nothing is going to help them there.

SE explicitly said they want everyone to play on the same server in FFXIV and MS said no http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/09/why-final-fantasy-xiv-isnt-coming-to-xbox-360-or-xbox-one

As an Xbox-only owner, MS being in second has been the best thing that could have happened to me. Tons of pressure for them to improve and offer more since they have fallen behind.

They can't just suddenly be doing better in Japan. They've gotta release games to do better in Japan, not do better in Japan and then "receive" games.

I really wish MS had decided to invest in Shenmue 3 and other things like Mistwalker games.

Not every game needs to be a major blockbuster or make you huge profits. Global customer goodwill is valuable too.

I definitely agree with this. Can't really fault Ms for focusing on Europe first this generation... They tried with 360 and got little to no results.

Though, i'm still hopeful Shenmue 3 will come, the whole way that KS was handled gave me a very strong impression of a Diablo 3 situation (ie: A marketing deal to make the other version disappear from the media)

Well, they've been getting their arses handed to them in a way they definitely weren't expecting coming into this gen. Therefore it makes perfect sense to rein in the aggressive, arrogant talk from the start of the gen and wheel out the 'humble' PR routines and focus on trying to regain goodwill where possible.

It's amazing how many of us haven't grown up. Back in the 16-bit days we were stupid kids. It made sense, especially when you didn't have your own money and were immature thinking you had to justify what you picked. The fact that so many adults give a crap and take to the internet to argue is mind-boggling to me.

I have the Xbone. I love Titanfall more than most and Dead Rising 3 was a great launch game. I've played other stuff here and there and had a good time. The controller is outstanding.

I want a PS4 just because I want to play the best version of all these games, and because games like Guilty Gear Xrd not coming to Xbone pisses me off to not end. That said, I'll live. I have plenty of games to play across many systems. I'll eventually get a PS4 when I feel it's worth having both. I'd be find with either though.

Signed,

Cool Story Bro

I think you are forgetting just how long it took the PS3 to get in game xmb/messaging and trophies. I mean, the PS3 launched in November of 2006 in North America and in game messaging and trophies didn't come out until July 2nd of 2008.

Sure, Sony may have worked hard to "keep up with the 360" but that stuff didn't happen overnight. And, we have already got a few nice updates on PS4. Sony, as more of a hardware company, was always lacking throughout the PS3 and now the PS4s life with software updates. Remember, Microsoft has some of the "smartest programmers in the world." per Penello. Software updates are pretty much in their DNA with their history in software development.
