Until Dawn: New Trailer Lets You Take Control

I need to keep my expectations/hype in check. I love everything that I've heard about this so far. Including the "all decisions are final" aspect.

Please be good. Please.

You said the game will flop, do you know what a flop is? & don't use NPD, we've been through the NPD argument a million times, Driveclub sold 2 million despite debuting at 50k on NPD.

I was kinda just following the lead set by the poster I was responding to:
"It'll flop because it's too close to MGSV!"
"Well, it'll flop because the market is not incredibly receptive to these types of games at a high pricepoint."

The reality of their balance sheets and their profits is going to be a mystery anyway. Though 2 million in sales didn't stop half of Evolution Studios from being fired after Drive Club.

No offense border, but I think your narrative is starting to fall apart.

That is fine. I'm just talking about the market as I see it, and if I'm wrong then so be it. Assuming an additional one million in sales seems like a bit much to me though, given the absolute death of software sales on last-generation consoles. Even Gran Turismo 6 came and went without a lot of fanfare.

I'd be more than happy to see Until Dawn succeed. I am more than interested in seeing if and how they have managed to make a truly branching narrative work. I especially want to see how the branching works in a world where the best TellTale can do is offer you meaningless choices that almost never affect the outcome of the story, and only marginally affect how the NPCs regard you.

At the same time I remain somewhat pessimistic about the fortunes of highly linear, cinematic experiences at AAA pricing -- particularly after the kinda tepid response to The Order 1886. I mostly just see the market as being a lot more crowded than it was when Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls shipped, but then there haven't been many other games outside of the TellTale titles that really test how QTE/CYOA games sell at the AAA tier.

This looks amazing. Those trailers, this is like my damn dream game. I'm tempted to buy two copies, one for my shelf and one digitally to play.

Please be good!

I got grudge sucked!
Well, it'll be a week before MGSV. The game is 10-15 hours long, you should be able to deal with it in a week?
The next window of opportunity would be late January or February 2016. The schedule is stuffed with major AAA releases between MGSV on 1st Sep until Just Cause 3 and Hitman in early Dec.

Is it really that long?

Hard to say how it would do in retail. I thought Heavy Rain would tank at retail and it did really well. Beyond: Two Souls....not so much.
They should promote it though because this is the type of game that could appeal to a more casual PS4 owner than MGSV would.

I will wait for user impressions, reviews etc.

I am undyingly curious about how they plan to fill out the meat of this game. How are they going to fill 10-15 hours? Looking at that IGN video, horny teenagers are already being murdered within the first 10 minutes so they're obviously not going for a slow burn. So what is the rest of the game? Dialogues? Hours more of false jump-scares? 60 minute chase sequences? How long can you tease out the tropes, characters, and plot devices of a horror movie before it starts to get repetitive and tedious? What do you do to slow things down and pace out events when the audience expects regular bloodshed and horror? This isn't a mystery story or a complex drama; you can't rely on the strength of your characters and scenario to extend to story's duration because the longer you make your audience deal with the idiotic characters the more impatient they will get.

It reminds me of the Scream TV show that MTV just launched -- I think it's an inherently bad and unsustainable idea, but I can't help but wonder what talented people might do to make it work.

This looks so awesome - but I'd be too scared to play it. Even that trailer gives me thee chills. Couldn't get through PT either. Hope it's good and does well.

Don't really buy into this line of thinking. For one it's a different type of game. It's not like you're making a decision of buying shooter A vs shooter B. Also there's plenty of us who will buy multiple games without batting an eye.

*raises hand*

Can anybody fill me in on how this game plays? I've been looking forward to it since it's initial announcement, especially since Larry Fessenden is involved with the writing. But I've been on a blackout since then. Is it something like Heavy Rain?

These similar titled games. At first I thought this was a new trailer for Horizon: Zero Dawn.

This is actually that game I heard about a while back I think last year about playing in basically a horror movie. That was a pretty good live-action trailer and good to hear about confirmation on who is playable. If the killer was playable then I could see there being some controversy around it. Hope to see more.

Yup. Heavy Rain, the Telltale games, Life is Strange are all apt comparisons in terms of gameplay I'd argue. Interactive, choice-driven adventure.

"The Road Not Taken"

That gamestop ad was just too good.

I would be okay with that.

Yeah, think Heavy Rain or Telltale games combined with old Choose Your Own Adventure books like the Goosebumps series.

Lots of QTEs and branching narrative choices.

There's also those Shattered Memories-esque psychiatrist segments with Peter Stormare. I'm really intrigued by it, and whether it influences the rest of the game.

Eight character (plus psychiatrist) perspectives, save everybody (10 to 15 hours) , everybody dies in the first hour, or somewhere in between. Possibly.

Thanks! I remain excited for this. Just hoping it doesn't turn into Jump Scare: The Game.

First and second were my favorite. Man these are really really good.

I wonder if they actually staged it or copped out with CGI

But this video is in the OP, too. :p

The OP should be called SilentNinja.

Man this game looks sick. I remember how much fun the Sony Experience live presentation was with the people screaming and stuff.
And the trailer give me huge Friday The 13th vibes and slight Evil Dead vibes.

Do we know when the review embargo is up? Optimistic about this but Sony has been fairly lax in their promotion even though it's out next week.

Wow, this one snuck up on me. And it looks like by far the most interesting PS4 title. It's the first one to make me actually think about getting another one.

I hope it reviews well.

Liked the Gamestop trailer way better. Agree it's releasing at a harsh time. Regardless, this is totally a "buy it when it's under $30" title in every possible way. If they are going to lock you into every decision branch there better at least be chapter saves.

I prefer to face the consequences of my decisions. That's kind of the whole point.

Kind of strange to see them do such an admirable job in marketing the game then have them send it out to die. There is no way no one in that meeting room pushed for a Halloween release, and I hope they remind the others of that when the game's numbers come in.

I'm more worried that the choices won't make any sense when it comes to the outcome.

Like, do I stay and fight with no weapons, or run? Say I run but the killer ends up in front of me or something, knocks me down and butchers me. Running seems like the smart choice, but really if I stayed and fought, the killer would have made a mistake, I gained the upper hand and the killer runs away.

I dunno, it's hard to explain. I just wonder if the choices will be logical or like...I don't know I can't explain it very well.

I understood what you meant and having seen some of the preview content I'd say it's not terribly easy to know which is the "correct" choice. The game even warns you that even choosing to do nothing can help keep you alive.
