Mad Max: Review Thread.

I watched gameplay videos and demos multiple times to know that the game is for me. As I get older, I have moved away from the idea that reviews are law and what they say is exactly how I have to feel and that I'm going to run out and cancel my preorder because some random site gave it a 7. At this point I just use them to make sure the game isn't a broken mess, and even at times you cant even trust them when it comes down to that (IGN Master Chief Collection Review.)

A recent game that I ignored "average" reviews for was Until Dawn, and it turned out to be one of my favorite games of the gen. I've just given up on reviews and all of the bragging/nontravercies/fighting that comes with them. I can't wait until tomorrow to buy this and Phantom Pain.

+1

Gameplay videos is all I need to see. As I've said before I've loved games that reviewed average and hated games that are supposedly goty material. Mad max looks great to me so it was an insta buy.

Just Cause 3 has more stuff closer together and more room for playing around, based on everything I've seen. Mad Max has a lot of empty space because it's a driving game in a wasteland, which is going to hurt it.

It's like in school.

90% or higher is good

80% to 90% is average

70% to 80% is baseline

60% to 70% is "you're probably going to have to retake this class."

under 60% is "you failed."

A 90 would be a A- how is that average? Your scale is completely off.

28 hours in, still loving it. I'm sure that'll all change in the next two hours, though ;)

One of the reasons raiding outposts over and over has yet to get boring is because of the variety in the challenge. The basic progression goes: scout outpost > take out defences and gain entry with the car > proceed on foot to defeat enemies and destroy key facilities in the base. But the game does a good job of throwing new enemies at you, both on the road and on foot, and it's these that make things more challenging as new moves, new tactics and new weaponry are introduced.

thx for info sounds cool and it kinda fixes one of the main problems Mordor had (not enough variety and that you get all cool stuff by the middle of the game)

Below a 90 isnt if you want to get in a good college/grad school. Think of your wallet like the number of seats left in Penn veterinary school and suddenly a 90 is average :p

And I mean, a B is average anyway.

The game is really fun. I'm about 15 hours in and I'm enjoying this more then metal gear, tbh

Great. That's just what I wanted to hear. Sounds like a next-gen '80s brawler from the future. I'm sure I'll love it.

This why I think more sites should use a 5* review system (like Giant bomb does) it makes more sense with how games are reviewed.

I prefer the use of this smaller scale too. Because it makes it hard for reviewers to bloat scores to the point where the perceived average increases, as has happened over the decades with scoring systems that are larger; try as they might Edge treats 5 as the average on their 10 point scale but no-one looks at it that way. 3 stars on a 5 star scale is still considered a decent game.

This why gameplay videos are my main source of knowing if the game is worth it for me now. If it looks like something I want to play then I'll get it.

Edit: I wish this game had multiplayer. It would be amazing just doing crazy shit with people online. It would really capture the feel of the movie IMO.
Damn it Avalanche, why are you so scared of multiplayer.

Wake up, check this thread, yep, more people using no name, clickbait blogs to confirm their preconceptions about this game being mediocre.

Seriously folks, at least save your drive by "I told you so" posts for when the embargo lifts later today.

Are you new to this video game review thing?

The tilted scales are a direct result of game reviewers' dependence on publishers feeding them material for the reviews. Wouldn't want to bite the hand that feeds you so you give that mediocre game a 7 instead of a 5 so you don't fall out of grace. It's a win for both sides, but yeah, we gamers have to deal with that shit now and interpret the scales accordingly.

You're not wrong. I'm aware of this, it just still bugs me. I've never been one to simply say, "well this is fucked but it's how it is so let's just accept it." I know why the industry is the way it is, and I know it will remain this way, and I also know that I'll keep decrying the things that just don't make any sense. Thanks for a civil response though.

Couldn't agree more. And on that note, I just randomly started to miss Gamepro. My youth.... I pine for it.

my main problem is that mordor got very good reviews as well, and I feel this is a very similiar games, except that it does not have a redeeming feature like mordor's nemesis system, at least not that I know of.
I am definitely waiting for more reviews, and impressions from GAF for the pc port.

Yea this is too much, I can still trust games that have reviews day before release (and obviously I'm super confident when it's a week in advance like MGS5, TLOU, TW3, it's almost always a very good sign), but this is like the last minute embargo, I'm expecting the reviews to be pretty harsh, or at least the publisher expect this.

I already bought it. As long as it gets 7+ and has no technical problems I'm fine with my purchase. I've bought multiple games in the past with an average of 7 and been very surprised, like the Darksiders series and Shadow Warrior. If I remember right Dying Light averaged 8 in score and that game was awesome. Too boot the game cost like 25 dollars for me in Sweden.

That's some odd post. Here's how I would've phrased it.

"I already bought it. As long as I have fun with it I'm fine with my purchase."

Looks good from what I've seen but not good enough to warrant a full price tag for me, I'll wait for it to be sub-£20.

I'm just saying that people shouldn't dismiss a game for being a 7.

Just Cause 2 didn't get super-impressive reviews either but that game is widely appreciated anyways.

It's already half-price on gmg.com...

30 hours in now, driving's still as satisfying and enjoyable as it was at the start, combat both on foot and in-car is a lot of fun and I'm loving the look and feel of the world. I feel like this game will be an 8 for me when all's said and done, but a 7 would be fair and I'd honestly be extremely surprised to see many major reviewers rate it a 6 or less. It's just a really well done open world experience that nails the tone of Mad Max, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table and people who've tired of the formula of modern open world games probably won't find much to excite them here, outside of the car combat itself.

People saying 'I'm having loads of fun with this game' is a billion times more relevant and indicative than two middling review scores. Particularly if these are amateur critics squeezing the game into an 'soon as possible' deadline and not really getting paid for it. You will not have fun with a game like this if that's your playing context.

When is the embargo up?

Look 20 posts up.

From the Reader's Gambit review:
"Ultimately Mad Max isn’t the worst game in the world, but it isn’t the best either."

I'm glad there are some reviews starting to come out....but that none-sentence above is utterly meaningless & trite.

Yeah. It sounds like beating around the bush to say the game is pretty terrible.

Fingers crossed for good reviews. MGS will consume my soul for a while, but I can't complain about having more good games.

Those are bad reviews. And I don't mean the score, I mean how they're actually written and the content of them. Very uninformative; as of right now I'll still maintain my intent to pick it up based on all the impressions that I've seen from Gaffers.

Reviews mean nothing to I.

No idea why people take reviews so personally, how many of you worked on the game? Are your bonuses tied to the reviews?

Watching someone play for over an hour last night on Playstation Live convinced me that *I* would like the game. Main dilemma is PS4 v. Steam -- I have a low end Alpha.

I never understood everyone thinking this game would be great. It had mediocre written all over it sense the first trailer. Was it just the movie that gave everyone hope?

Looking forward to reading other reviews but mainly more impressions from GAF members. Won't get it for a little while though.

I was under the impression that it's the Just Cause developer that had people interested.

In my opinion it doesn't have mediocre written all over it. I think it totally depends what is your taste. As for my favorite food: Dinki Di Dog Food!

It looking good (in all respects - I'm not talking about graphics) and being made by Avalanche Studios is why I've been interested in it for a while. I've not seen the new movie. It's not based on that anyway.

If games did not cost 80$ here in canada, and spare time wasnt an issue. Then I would agree with you lol but after paying that much and playing best of best with my time. I am not buying shit blindly.

I am not one of those who will look at MC score and decide yes or no. I like to read reviews, and GAF impressions.

Reviews mean everything to me now days deciding on my purchases. Not the review score though.

I mean features such as the Nemesis system. That's Monolith's work not Avalanche. It would be nice if more people copied that, it's an interesting feature, but it seems people see Warner Bros. and assume everyone of the games it publishes will or should have the same features, even when they're by completely different studios.

Well, Monolith took Arkham's combat and as has Mad Max it seems so, why not?

Now, it's been a while since I was in school but back then C was designated average.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.

Great post.

Games costing $74.99 - $79.99 in Canada now is no joke. Especially when Mad Max is getting poor reviews and is launching the same day as the best reviewed game of the year, MGSV. The choice is clear on which game to get.

Metacritic is not the final word, but it's a good guide and has anyone ever purchased a game that has over 90 on MC and ended up thinking it was an awful game? Doubt it.

I'd probably be more interested if Max's character model wasn't so utterly terrible. He looks like Nathan Drake with extra stubble and a leather daddy outfit.

About 7 hours in, and I can at the very least say that this game is a hell of a lot better than shadow of mordor in terms of artistic design and gameplay. Story is ok so far, nothing more than that though. Hopefully it'll keep on getting better.
