Even though I felt like I wanted a character-switcheroo plot twist, I feel really disappointed by this. Playing the game after I know who Venom Snake really is makes everything feel really hollow and meaningless and it seems more and more like a lame ass excuse to leave parts of Big Boss's story and descent into "evil" untold. Definitely a cop out rather than a twist that adds depth and makes you actually think about things.

Pretty much none of the unfinished parts of the story had any resolution and now we're left with even more questions. Like what Big Boss was doing for 9 years? Unless he was ALSO in a 9 year coma which would be just.... stupid.

Last Day in Outer Heaven.

If only Phantom Pain ended in something remotely close as to the depictions of this fan-made comic. This is my way to dealing with the phantom pain of this game.

Well, at least V has a decent ending in my head now.

Well, at least we can see what the voice actor had to put up with there...

As far as anyone knows, the voice actor enjoyed his gig. From Jay Tavare's facebook posts:

Jay-Tavare-Code-Talker-Metal-Gear-Solid-V.jpg

"A first look at “Code Talker” the character I voice in the upcoming super game Metal Gear Solid V. Phantom Pain. Knowing how to speak some Athabskan did help in learning the complex Navajo dialog I had so far. Thanks to my Elders I know I did it justice. We are not done yet so this year is more work. :)))"

“We are still working on the game. In fact I am back in the studio next month but almost there. Code Talker is an awesome character, he speaks Navajo and English and the challenge for me was to get the Dine language correct and I had to get help from my Navajo Elders.”

MMarston

Was getting caught part of your plan?
Funny thing is, given the set up, I'd be more interested in a BB vs V dynamic than the Liquid vs Sold dynamic believe it or not.

I mean, by the end of 4 Liquid (if you could even call him that) even admits he didn't even have a good reason to fuck Snake up aside from "iunno settle the score from MGS1 or sth"

^ yeah Code Talker's VA was awesome. The actual dialogue... eh. But that guy was solid and I'm glad he had fun!

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
In my head canon, V is not ok with it when he learns the truth
His speech to Snake at the end of MG1 implies he accepts his fate to an extent, almost pridefully claiming to be Big Boss, but there might be some lingering resentment to it because he says that he won't die for nothing, taking Snake with him.

its the same voice yet Huey's mannerisms and speech are completely different from Otacon's, compared to Naked Snake and Solid Snake being roughtly the same. It works fine I think.
But there's no inflection to distinguish them. It doesn't matter what he's saying.

Id say across the board the voice acting was good.

Keif - great
Robin atkin downes - excellent
J Horan- deliciously hammy
J tavaye - believable and surprisingly dead pan
Randolph - a true piece of shit. Spot on

The bad ones for me was sheriff ocelot. Troy baker got bad material to work with.

How did they let all these kids escape mother base? Seriously it's an oil platform in the middle of the ocean. Did they steal a helicopter? Some of them are in Africa and some of them are in Afghanistan. Did they steal two helicopters? Worst security ever. It was nice of them to escape to the two areas that are in the game though.
Seriously though that was the one time where I was annoyed with silent snake. Ocelot and miller being all 'the kids escaped and took our giant robot with them. Gee, boss that really sucks I guess'

I would have screamed in their faces 'YOU ASSHOLES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE IN CHARGE WHILE IM GONE AND YOU LET FUCKING LITTLE KIDS STEAL A GIANT METAL GEAR'

Like, they took no responsibility whatsoever.

Eli is my least favorite character in the game. He's angry all the time. His anger is such a critical plot point that it's the driving force behind the ruination of Skull Face's plans.

But why is he so angry? Why should I care about him? There are some blanks you can fill in thanks to a few lines ("I want to see my father"), but he's nothing except for his rage to destroy anyone or anything with authority over him. Nothing worth making him the antagonist for what would have been the final battle of the game.

So why did Big Boss kill him in MGS4?

This is definitely one of my biggest disappointments in the game. I was really looking forward to Liquid Snake's origin story but we got nothing of the sort. He says like three lines and undergoes no character development at all, even if we include the mission 51 dialogue.

I thought the events of this game would shape his obsession with Big Boss. I expected his father to poison him against Zero and encourage his hatred but we really got nothing of the sort. He already had those feelings before we met him. As you say, he literally does nothing in the game except act angry and we already knew he could do that in MGS1, this game taught me nothing at all about Liquid Snake.

Don't know how much their is to learn about Liquid. We already know how he ends up in MGS1 and how he felt inferior. MGSV gives some decent context to his upbringing and whereabouts in his early life anyways. I thought it was cool seeing Eli being a little shit with daddy issues.

Tavare must think Kojima is on crack with some of the dialogue he had to record. Though he was also in Human Centipede 3 so he's seen some things.

At least you can talk. Who are you?
Finished up for the night. Currently at 85% after finishing War Economy, the Extreme version will be a little harder but I'll stick to the same route.

This'll be on OT2 by the time I wake up. SUCH A LUST FOR DISCUSSION

He thinks Venom is his dad and Venom treats Eli fine. So it actually makes more questions as to why Liquid felt like Big Boss turned his back on him. Another instance where the twist takes away from the plot. In the tapes the real big boss says how he hates his clones and doesn't care about them. The fake big boss reaches out to the liquid and tries to guide him. The whole thing is stupid.

Ok, finally finished the game and I'm disappointed.

So Big Boss was just chillin'? If he changed his face, what about MGS 4?

The entire story is so underwhelming. We really don't get a credible explanation for the Skulls and what happens to them after Skullface dies.

Quiet the same thing.

Eli the same thing.

I'm starting to see why Konami was fed up with Kojima. Chapter 2 is basically Konami saying "ship the game".

The game, while big, isn't that huge and areas are used over and over again.
Everything feels so underwhelming after a very positive initial reaction.

To those wondering what's necessary to get mission 46, listening to all the tapes is definitely a requirement. Repeating missions in extreme is not.

Would've been better if it was the real Big Boss interacting with him and telling him he's no son of his, and that he's a worthless asshole, instead of Venom just being neutral I guess (as with anything else in the game).

Well, he explains it in episode 51. He thinks he is a loser and just a copy of his father, no real individual. created in a lab by Cipher.

Finished all of the Paz stuff. Actually kind of sad. She really was an unfortunate victim of zero.

The impact is kind of lessened somewhat when you realise she isnt even talking to the real Big Boss :s

Lets be real. Kojima loves making these games and he makes a ton of bank and gets acclaim for these games.

If anything he keeps fucking around and experimenting with these games to keep things fresh. Sometimes they work sometimes they dont. He isnt on any martyr mission to piss off the fans enough so theyll stop asking for sequels.

He wants us to ask for more sequels. And mgsv just proves he can advance and do great things with core gameplay mechanics and level design.

Not piss off, educate would be a more apt word. I don't think he's manufactured a way to get fired and become a martyr - though people are going to make him out to be this. I'm not saying he hates the series, there's no way someone would put this much into something they hate. He adores it but wants to get a message across as well. You can call it pretentious or whatever, but Kojima is probably the biggest auteur in video games.

--You get MGS2 which tells you (repeatedly) to stop trying to contextualise everything and let things go, to pass things on for the next generation. Everything about the last 1/5 inside arsenal is a meta-commentary on video games and the culture surround it at the time (among so many other things that the video game industry has clearly ignored).
--People demand sequel to explain what was never meant to be explained. You get MGS3 which was at the time only loosely tied in and had a self contained story. It's pretty grounded compared to the others.
--People continue to demand answers and you get MGS4 which is what people were clamouring for but if you look closely everything has been corrupted in some way - I don't mean this in an overtly negative way.
--Then you get MGSV* which is leaps and bounds ahead of every other MGS in gameplay and the story's big reveal is that you are playing as someone trying to be Big Boss and not Big Boss himself. I need to go over this more (trying to work out the current internal canon atm) and see some other people's interpretations before I cement myself into something - could possibly be Kojima embracing the fandom's desire for more MGS too.

Honestly, I'd ignore all this if it wasn't so heavily documented on the post-modern elements/fuckery of MGS2, but Kojima is insane and seems like this would be his kind of thing. The feelings of people towards the twists of PP feel so reminiscent of those to MGS2, except now there is no chance of a Kojima directed sequel. Or maybe I just never want the Kojima MGS to end and need something to cling to - that's pretty likely.

*I actually had a question I meant to ask earlier, was MGSV ever called MGS5 in anything official?

That scene was comedy gold. Here are three of the biggest badasses in the world and they're just standing there, silently watching as a small group of punk kids flies away laughing with their giant robot and a helicopter.

Then Miller breaks the silence with: "......Boss, I don't think Ralph's death was an accident!"

No shit, Miller.

I have a question.

What happens if you kill Quiet ?

Does she disappear from the game ? What happens then ? Alternate cutscenes ? What about missions 43 and 46 ?

I don't think fine for is the word lol. Like BB said in the tapes, he treated him like every other person. He broke the kids freaking arm and fought him once to bring him in and once for fun pretty much. Venom being how he was, as it was perceived by Eli, kind of lends to his disdain. I still would've liked some real BB/Eli interaction but that probably happened offscreen.

Yeah but when you think about the fact it's actually the medic who failed to save her, it kind of makes even more sense. Plus the motherbase members from PW seemed to like having her around so it was probably also someone he considered a friend.

With Venom not learning the truth until Solid Snake is right outside his door I can understand his smirk reaction.

All this damn he thought he was the real thing and was working towards his dream and right in the middle of things going NUCLEAR this tape tells all him all this bullshit. It's the kind of thing you can't help but laugh at, one of those insane morbid laughs knowing how badly you got fucked over and its too late.

Well that's how I'm going to take it, that cut dialogue was cut so shut up, it never happened.

What cut dialogue are you referring to?

The early reviews came from that Konami review event, and I'm pretty sure they said the current ending wasn't in that review build. Didn't stop some of them giving it a perfect score though.

Wait, if the true ending wasn't in the game for the review event, how did the leaked mission list that was "fake" include the final mission?

Nobody really knew at that point and really, it's not a place of a review. They're rating what was put in front of them, not what could have been.

Such a lust for revenge....

It's not about actually knowing if there's cut content. The game feels decidedly incomplete. As usual, game reviewers aren't to be paid attention to.

True that.

Also what happened to Ammanda?
Is she mentioned anywhere.

Well Big Boss tolerated Zadornov escaping 7 times. Maybe they hypnotised Venom to be just as dumb.
