Thanks to everyone who played my last course! I made some changes and reuploaded it:

wn5kCa3.jpg

There's now a few extra rewards for exploration and it's a bit more difficult.

Finally made a new level that I think is actually worth sharing here.

Snake Platform!

Dammit, I was going to make a level based on this idea! If I do one, I'm not trying to steal your idea, I swear. :)

I Grow, I Shrink, I Grow Again!
64B6-0000-0069-6ABE

This level is at I place I finally feel comfortable with. The main gist is abusing invincibility frames. It's difficult, but hopefully not frustrating. Let me know what you think.

Another level I really quite like!

I actually died once because I reached the next mushroom too quickly, grabbing it before I shrank again and making the level unwinnable, but perhaps I was just a little quick!

THe mushroom in question was the one where, on the last mad dash across a spike bed, where you path forms a shape something like where x is a spike.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx _____x
_____________________x
__ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (m)x
__________________xxxx
_______________________ (level ends ->)
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The mushroom (m) is the one I managed to get to too quickly.
edit: ahh, gaf ate my attempt at an ascii drawing, ah well.
Other than that, great level, not too hard for what occurs. I think only died 3-4 times.

Seems like a cool level, but I kept dying, and getting back to parts where I messed up is a bit of a chore for me in a level like this. It doesn't really allow speeding through if you're confident or knowledgable, with the exception of not grabbing the mushroom at the beginning, which actually makes the level a lot easier and faster than if you don't grab it until you need one. Might give this another shot later, but dying on the easier parts discouraged me from going farther, knowing it's a long level without checkpoints.

lol

I only just figured out how to make Snake Platforms so I didn't really do much with them since I didn't want to make the level really frustrating or anything. There's plenty of ideas left to explore!

Later on I'm gonna make another one using bob-ombs!

And with that, round 2 is a-go!

Voting Rules:

Once the deadline for submitting levels is reached, I will assemble all the entries and post the list in here. SMM-GAF will then go ahead and try the levels. You can assign points to up to three levels - your first pick gets three points, your second pick two points, your third pick one point.

The voting will be done in a group format. With 68 entries, I will post four randomly assembled groups of 17 and we'll vote on one group at a time. Three levels - the ones with the most points - from each group will advance into the final voting group. In the case of a tie in third place, both proceed.

You can give feedback in the thread and reveal your ranking if you wish. However, you must send me your ballot in a PM, this ensures anonymity for those who want it and, more importantly, gives me an easier time counting your votes.

The deadlines for voting will be the following:

Group 1 ~ Thursday, Sep 24 (12PM GMT+1)
Group 2 ~ Thursday, Oct 1 (12PM GMT+1)
Group 3 ~ Tuesday, Oct 6 (12PM GMT+1)
Group 4 ~ Sunday, Oct 11 (12PM GMT+1)

The final three winners will be included in the Community Showcase.

Group #2

NOTE: I have the current group of levels starred on my account. Punch in an ID of mine (AADE-0000-001B-12DD) and check out my 'starred levels' on my profile for quick access! This should facilitate the playing process significantly.

Woo hoo! Vote for me! Vote for me!

So rather than sit here and write out every code in this thread is there someone who I can follow in the game who has starred nearly every level in this thread? That would be so much easier to navigate. Just give me the code to one of your levels so I can track you, and of course I will play your level.

Edit: LOL the post above me.

If I'm someone who doesn't particularly enjoy creating his own maps or levels, and gets the most enjoyment out of beating games' campaigns, will this be for me? I like Mario, and borrowed this from the library, but if it's just a bunch of "hardest level ever" gameplay, it won't be for me.

Stick to stuff you find here on GAF or on the Mario Maker sub-reddit, or Mario Maker Hub, and you'll find a lot to like about the game.

Plus, I thought I was buying it just to play user-created levels, without much interest in creating my own, but I've found myself spending way more time with the level editor than I expected. It's like a bit of a game itself, and teaches you *a lot* about game design.

Considering there is this huge list of levels that no one has given feedback for in this same thread, I doubt anyone has had the time to star even just the best levels posted here.

You can't make whole campaigns in SMM (well, you sort of can, but you can't play them online that way), but if you like beating individual levels sort of in a Super Meat Boy style where lives don't mean anything, you might like SMM. You'll also probably be pleasantly surprised with what you can create if you give it some time.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty proud at what I've achieved so far.
Here's the medal list for anyone interested:

Start: 10 Levels
1 Star: 1st Medal
50 Stars: 2nd Medal - 20 Levels
150 Stars: 3rd Medal - 30 Levels
300 Stars: 4th Medal - 40 Levels
500 Stars: 5th Medal - 50 Levels
800 Stars: 6th Medal - 60 Levels
1,300 Stars: 7th Medal - 70 Levels
2,000 stars: 8th Medal - 80 Levels
3,000 stars: 9th Medal - 90 Levels
5,000 stars: 10th Medal - 100 Levels

Alright, I've made a sequel to my Ghost House Yoshi level. I'll post both of them here since no one from here seems to have played the first one either.

Level 1: Where is Yoshi?
JZYlNRP.jpg

Find your dinosaur horse thingamabob friend and reach the goal! This stage has no bottomless pits or any sort of pressing time limit, so take your time to explore and deal with the few enemies that will try to stop you from reuniting with your aforementioned green friend.

Level 2: Haunted Horsecapades
8ZZmGll.jpg

Continue on further into the haunted mansion. Make sure to hang on to your horse or you might find exploration a lot more perilous. Luckily there are no pits for Yoshi to fall into here either, so you should be fine even if you take a hit or two. This one is a bit more challenging than the previous level, but should still be very manageable.

I have a ton of level to catch on this thread u_u

I've just "finished" my second level, themed around Monster Hunter.
It's not hard, but there could be tricky boss fights.

Octopiggy, I'm not part of your region so I can't check, but you've got to be on your regional all time top maker list. You're not far from being on the global all time list either.

You're #32 weekly! And you're above Panga!!

It's funny to think...any of those youtubers could make a little 10 minute level in a video and instantly shoot back up the list too.

Okay, so I decided to make one more version of Boo's Plumbing Nightmare.

Boo's Plumbing Nightmare ver 2.0 (43AB-0000-0069-9A0E)
DpmrAlOl.jpg

Changes from the original version:

pydqxbvl.jpg

In the first room of the sewer there is now a door. Taking it leads to...

okMIp6rl.jpg

the checkpoint room. Later in the level a 4-digit passcode is displayed. If you activate the blue lava lifts in the order that passcode indicates a p-switch will fall from above and you can skip half the level.

o1BeVO7l.jpg

The garden has had several muchers removed and the ceiling is higher over the grinder. There is a safe platform on the left that spawns infinite fire flowers. Arrows indicate optimum jumping spots.

ljt6tEjl.jpg

The bottomless pit of this section has been replaced by a spike trap floor so that players can try again if they fall. They will need to respawn the blue lift by leaving the area and returning.

LsZk7lBl.jpg

The "boss" chamber has been radically redesigned. There is now much less going on visually. The clown cars are gone and the 4 boos are evenly distributed. You have less safe room, but you still have plenty and the room spawns fireflowers at every turn. The boss music has been replaced with bonus music to make players feel less like they need to jump face first into death. It's supposed to evoke a carousel. You just have to wait for the way to open, and it opens after one lap.

Okay I am going to post my two levels. Nothing too fancy. The first one is my favorite but the second one has more stars. I had to delete my first one and make a few small changes so no one gets lost. The first one's name is just something random as I didn't now what to call it.

You guys with thousands of stars, I'm assuming you aren't just gaining them naturally via people finding and playing your level via the in-game mechanisms, yeah? It's because you're sharing them via some other online system? Or have a ton of followers because of some kind of online notoriety?

Just checked. My region is the entirety of Europe, so there's a lot of competition:
WVW69ia7EIUu7YV7Me

11th in the weekly, regional chart.

WVW69ia7Dc8i-h_ffz

17th in the all-time, regional chart.

In both weekly and all-time I'm the third highest ranked maker in the UK. It's now my mission to get on to the all-time, global chart!

Played through it, pretty awesome stage. Got all three lives and got through it on my first try. :D
Second life was probably the hardest to get, I lost all my stuff there and was small again at the end. Definitly a fun stage, which seems pretty big. :D

How do you guys get so many stars? :(

I made a WarioWare themed level (2B43-0000-0038-3F06) that got some attention a few days after release. Someone posted it on Reddit and then got featured by Siliconera and Kotaku and got played by some streamers too I think.

I think once you have some sort of exposure then the ball starts rolling and people will try out your other courses. Being in the charts probably helps too even if I'm quite far down.

edit: On top of that I would say that my levels are quite strong thematically too. Some people might say gimmicky but I would probably describe them as different or special. Pretty much all of them are designed to be a unique experience. Something that will stand out in 100 Mario Challenge. Something that might make people say "wow" or "that's cool", "I like that". I think that's what makes people to star my courses.

It's very fun. Did you leave the piranha plant on top of a single row of blocks on purpose so those who notice it can sequence break?

Haha crap! That was totally unintentional. It's always funny to get something so obvious pointed out. :D

I have some time on my hands tomorrow evening so I'll go through all the new contest stages!

Worked on a new SMW ghost house tonight. It's really hard to come up with a unique idea or a general theme...
I spent half the time staring at the object selection menu and just couldn't decide what to do with my level.
I wanted to create something less linear but I just can't do it. Right now it's at the stage where it is challenging and fun but I think it just seems a little thrown together. I still have some space left. Maybe I'll add some optional rooms to throw the player off a little. It's a ghost house after all!
Looked at some actual SMW ghost house levels and realized that 50% of the stuff is not possible in SMM and the other half is very basic platforming. It didn't help at all!

Finally made a new level that I think is actually worth sharing here.

Snake Platform!

You solved the snake platform problem. Fun level too. I liked it. I would probably suggest a land segment between the snaking just to break up the concept a bit more. Love what you did though.

Here's my Donkey Kong Jr. remake. Tried to keep it feeling as faithful as I could to the original game, except with a twist on the final stage (since there is nothing that could quite replicate the "keys on vines" mechanic of the original).

Monty Kong Jr.

If you enjoy that, try out my other level

I made a semi-exploration/semi-puzzle type level with light platforming and not a lot of enemies. I packed it with quite a few cool secrets (including hidden 1-ups) that I think shouldn't be too obscure and even a few alternate ways to progress through the level so people hopefully don't get stuck or discouraged.

I've really been looking forward to having GAF give it a shot. Feedback would be appreciated (here or on Miiverse), just since I haven't had anyone to test it live besides myself so I hope some design communicated itself enough because then I can possibly use that knowledge for future levels.

I post at GAF and another forum, and that's basically it. I also put my levels on that Mario Maker Hub today because I keep seeing it linked and it seems like an awesome tool. Kotaku featured one of my music levels (Darude - Sandstorm) which actually was kind of disappointing to me because I've made levels that I think are actually good and fun to play. I've seen one or two other youtube videos with my music levels too but it's not like they have a million views or anything.

I think it's self-perpetuating. I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to put up a musical level and it got some stars, and probably popped up in the early "you may also like" list. Once people follow you, they keep looking to see what else you've made and the rest of your levels get stars too...at least I think that's what's happening.

I know that Octopiggy was featured in a number of "you've got to try this level!" lists, I saw him popping up a lot for a while there. :)

I try my best to make good, Nintendo-like levels with strong themes and concepts. I don't know if I succeed, or if it's just the music giving the other levels exposure. I put a lot of work into the music levels too, it sounds kind of boring to me when it's just the melody with nothing else, so I try to put in chords and harmony too, which I've noticed not many people do. And I run into object limits all the time on them. Hours of tweaking...but I really enjoy making them.

Finally a level I'm kind of proud. It's called "A Mario Between Worlds" and... well, I think you could guess what it is about.

I'll be making a much more complex Snake Platform level this weekend, and I'll be sure to include a break this time!

I had been meaning to make an airship level, and I finally pulled one together. In case anyone likes speedrunning -- I figured out a couple things while wrapping this level and realized you could cut right through it pretty quickly with a lot of practise and hard work. I got down to 32 seconds. On a runthrough before I uploaded (and made one minor, largely unrelated change) I actually did it in 30 flat. The level itself isn't that hard, but trying for a 30-second time might be!

there is a LOT of levels posted in this thread (and this very page!)

anyone want me to check out any specific levels and give some feedback?

post your codes!

I don't have any feedback on this course yet, so sure.

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I might take a break from levels for a bit, I feel I've run out of ideas (well, I have two ideas that pend on unlocking certain Amiibo characters), plus I'm worried if DLC comes out, I don't want to exhaust my creativity before I get to use the new stuff.

Plus I have a ton of your guys levels to check-out.
