Microsoft buys Havok from Intel, GAFfers tear skin off while screaming about endtimes

Didnt Sony invent the tech?

It wasn't Sony alone, it was the Blu Ray association, Sony was just the majority owner which was why they pushed Blu Ray so hard, any royalties are paid to the association & then that money is split depending on their ownership percentage.

i didn't even know havok was looking to be bought.

first mojang, now this.

so mS is gonna start making money off of every Ps4 game sold that uses it?

After 4 months, my GAF account has been activated! My first post!

So I think this is great news, especially for the future of Crackdown 3. The Gamescom demo was very impressive, and MS buying Havok is a pretty huge deal imo. And it seems like MS wants to beef up their Azure cloud servers to make more games that take advantage of the cloud like C3 will. Exciting stuff.

using my example in the prior post.

directx 11 uses havokx 11, open to everyone

directx 11.2 uses havokx 11.2, exclusive to xbox one

So none of the PC games made my 3rd parties uses it? Its still being used by many different companies technically, just not Sony and Nintendo since theyre exclusive games are being built on their platforms.

I actually didn't think this news would send some people into a frenzy. Business will continue as normal for their favourite platforms.

The theme song for this thread should be a parody of "fancy" by Drake but the lyrics switched to "Oh you salty huh? Oh you salty huh?"

:p

Now a days someone can just create their own physics engine right? They've sold that idea with lots of games.

"Never before seen physics engine"
"Physics engine will blow your mind"
"We're using an advanced physics engine with this"

It's probably a smart move, but chances are someone has an alternative or something as a backup. I wouldn't be surprised because there's a large field of AI programmers out there and people working freelance.

Wow some people jump to crazy assumptions. MS almost certainly didn't but Havok to try and deny access to tools to competitors; if anything this shows further moves into having core technology and IP they can license to everyone.

in that case yeah but it is a poor example. my mistake. havok is middleware.

it would actually be:

havokx is open to all platforms

havokx.1 is exclusive to microsoft platforms

Similar to how their mobile division started announcing impressive profits despite low Windows Phone sales, thanks to patent trolling?

This thread...fucking ridiculous. Giant corporations don't buy expensive ass middleware for which there are alternatives out there just to thumb their nose at competitors.

Yes and there is probably other MS owned patents/licenses that Sony uses that MS profit from.
There might even be Sony owned patents that MS use.
It's not a big deal with regards one of them making a profit off of the other.

I guess thats possible but i dont really see why theyd do that. Its just middleware in the end. Not a selling point really.

I don't get this deal? How does this benefit Microsoft other then they avoid/collect any royalties that need to be paid.

There must be something bigger at play here

Can they somehow incorporate this into direct x 12 and make it part of that?

Can someone please explain to a noob what this really means?

This means that Havok is likely to:
a. Become Windows exclusive
b. Become completely free for developers
c. Get GPU acceleration support (via DXCS most likely)
But this won't happen soon and it won't happen to the versions they are licensing out right now. So skies won't fall and earth won't stop.

why are people saying devs will stop using it just because they have to pay MS now???

surely they had to pay Intel for the rights to use ir or am i missing something completely

like what? blu ray's the only thing i can think of but i think that's already been discussed in this thread.

doesn't have to be bigger than that

someone did a cost-benefit analysis, it came out better for MS if they bought Havok for a certain price in the long run... Intel accepted said price and that was that

now going forward MS don't have to pay that bit extra to intel, it stays internal.... they'll also take in all the little bits from sony, EA, activision etc etc aswell

I have no idea what tech patents Sony might own that MS use.
There might be some, that's why I said might.
I do know Sony aren't adverse to using MS patents.

CD?

No - that was same patent trolling that sadly underpins much of mobile industry.

Im clearly referring to having a toolset that's popular and positions MS as a services provider in line with their new stated direction.

I'm aware MS has many an ugly skeleton in their closet and far from approve of many of their business plays but not every move is evil in and of itself.

Probably.

They mentioned the cloud and Azure in the announcement, probably something to do with that.

I don't get that, If it works out in Microsoft's favour regarding just royalties that means Intel is getting an incredibly bad deal here.

Companies like Microsoft don't just aquire things like havok to avoid paying royalties.

There is something bigger at play and my suspicion is some big direct x integration. Someone else mentioned Azure and the cloud so maybe Microsoft is going to use this tech to develop some crazy cloud based physics.

Well, Sony had a good run, but I think we all knew this is how it would end.
