The Legend of Legacy demo hits NA eshop on September 22

Gave this demo a whirl and I really liked it, ended up actually putting in the pre-order for the music bonus that comes along with it even though I'd have preferred a digital version of the game.

I've been rolling with what the game gave me at the start: Bianca, Meurs, and knight-lady-whos-name-I-forgot. I've picked up the others as well but I don't see much reason to use anyone other than the guys I've already used and "leveled".

That said, is there any good way to speed up learning magic? It seems to take forever to proc the acquisition off of the shards.

Dark Giants, if you dont have the blocking skills or think you cant beat him. Just run away after you feel youve learned as much as you can in that fight. Just do a quicksave before you fight one, and always try to fight them close to a water tower.

Kinda dissapointed that fighting bosses is the best way to learn new skills, but I guess it adds a "High risk, High reward" feel which is interesting.

Any idea how to get Dark Giants to appear?

Think I will try and go without using the item ship/spotpass feature on my first run through the game. Hopefully that won't be an issue between the equipment you can find in the field and the item shop inventory.

why won't turn based fighting die. its boring.. slow... and looks retarded

You might consider that what you find slow and boring about a specific combat system may have something to do with aspects other than the difference between turn based and action based design. Since the market seems highly supportive of turn based systems in certain games and genres, it would be foolish to think that it will go away simply because you don't prefer it. And since there is no shortage of action based combat games available, it seems highly selfish of you to wish that other people might be denied something they enjoy simply because it doesn't appeal to you.

How sad is it that I am watching a let's play of a demo. :(

Cant play it yourself? either way, its not sad. Pretty sure people were going bonkers on the Smash Bros. 3DS Demo and watching streams.

Also, I forgot to mention this, but the Dark Giant actually dropped a equipment for me

Robe of Midnight

Def: 13

Has a double circle on all attack types and elements but a X to Status which I think means that the person wearing it will easily get afflicted with poison, sleep etc.

EDIT: I just realized that's one of the special equipment's being sold.....huh, guess I don't have to grind for that one now.

I'm in Europe so I am patiently waiting for the game.

They appear in dark areas which appear randomly in different sections of the maps. If the dark area doesn't appear go back to the inn at the town and rest to reset the maps.

Is there a way of knowing if they will appear or is it totally random? Not sure if the best bet is to rest and traverse all the maps, or just rest and check only the intro zones to the areas. Rinse repeat.

Random. Best to traverse all sections of the maps, rest, rinse and repeat.
You'll know you've found it when the area is dark and the map isn't getting filled in. The shadow giant is represented by a shadow with waves that moves along the ground.

I uploaded a picture. Heres what the area looks like.

It's really strange how people get so annoyed by the mere existence of games that don't interest them. Turn-based JRPGs are also solidly niche, so there's not even the "this popular game is killing creativity in the industry!" accusation to put forth, though that's also a silly attitude to hold.

Okay, wow, ya fighting those Titans gets you a lot of levels. Bianca learned like five spear abilities, all of the equipped water ones, and gained 13 levels in Plunge, lol.

But the fight took forever and a day, haha.

(Everyone else gained nothing. :( )

Of course the Amnesiac learns the most skills.....lol.

Well, it didn't help (or hurt the fight) that Meurs was just recasting the water elemental skill over and over to keep the Titan from using any abilities all fight, lol. I don't think he can learn that skill or learn other skills from it.

The other character was just spamming Ricochet forever.

Yeah thats the best strategy. I use Water shield to help. And ive tried many times but water contract looks impossible to learn.

I've only ever seen it in the rightmost section of the first area, does anyone know if they appear anywhere else in the demo?

Also, if you manage to defeat it will another appear or are they one time only in the demo?

they can show up anywhere and everywhere, I've had it even appear at the entry point in hidden forest.

I stopped playing after beating one so someone else can better answer whether they show up, but I don't see why they wouldn't. They are not story related(beating them doesn't progress the story).

Huh, weird. I've only seen it three times and every time it was in the same place.

Seems like it can spawn anywhere, I just run the three easy to reach maps in Forest Temple, and I'll run into one after a few minutes of sleep cycles.

At this point, I can kill them without any trouble so I am putting the demo aside until the game launches. I am going to be extremely over-leveled, though, lol.

Ok, I'm pretty lost. I've cleared 3 maps in the forest, recruited some new people and I'm not sure where to go next. I know in the first section of the forest there is another area to get to at the top of the map but no idea how to get there. I've just been running around aimlessly. Any ideas?

Edit: Never mind, I figured it out.

Hint:
Look for a large staircase.

More specific hint:
It's near one of the statues you got a stone from.

So I've been playing the demo for 7 hours and I'm thinking it was a bad idea. I checked some end game play throughs and found that the player was using a spear of strength
36. I have a spear in the 30s from grinding the ship you can pay to leave and come back with items. In fact all of my characters have weapons in the 30s.
I think im going to start over once the game releases and have a more natural gameplay progression.

I still haven't managed to beat it yet. I think I need to change around my party members and see if I can get anyone to learn any charms. None of them have taken yet and it's getting a little annoying.

Huh...gave this a look and was disappointed, which was a shame since I have been interested in it. I mean, I like JRPGs, I like turn based combat, and I love island exploration games (seriously I think "exploring an island" is woefully underutilized as a structural device in game design, it has a lot of great advantages) but...this just isn't grabbing me

Part of it is how painfully generic the dialogue is. Part of it is how the visuals look, although I recognize that's a budget thing. Most of it is just that the battle system isn't really sucking me in, even after about two hours.

In a different year maybe this would still scratch some kind of itch for me, but with Bravely Second hopefully close on the horizon I can't help but compare this to Bravely Default and in terms of what I'd like to sink my time into that sequel is almost certainly going to fulfill that need considering how much I love the good parts of Bravely Default

Also parts of interacting with it feel sluggish in a way I struggle to describe

That's SaGa for you, right there. You either like it or don't. (Not trying to be an ass.)

The last remnant is the best SaGa game for people to get into imo, The Legend of Legacy demo seems to have too little story for most people to get hook on. I want another last remnant :(

Since this game is light on story, from what I understand, it seems perfect to play while doing other things such as watching shows you don't really care about with the girlfriend. On the other hand, the soundtrack is great so far, so it would be a shame to play it muted.

I wonder how limited the launch edition will be. I really want to pick it up but have a lot of expenses at the moment.

I really liked this demo. I haven't played an RPG were you level the stats instead of levels and job levels in a long while.
I also like how light-hearted this game looks, it's like "let's just go fucking around, having adventures and killing some monsters". Very different from FF Type-0, which i'm playing at the moment.

I don't have any complaints, except for the fact that the Avalon isle looks kind of small.

I will most likely buy this game.

From the in-game encyclopedia there looks to be 20 maps to explore, so not too small.

The official site is up. Still no word about the changes they made for the western release...

Yeah, they're cutting it way too close. Some players have tried tracking the changes themselves. So far the consensus seems to be that stat gains and skill awakenings are easier to attain in the NA version. The merchant ships also seem to return faster. In the JPN version it took 2/4/10 hours for the 300/1000/5000 ships respectively. In the NA demo it takes 1/3/3.5-5 hours.

I'm not sure how I like these changes. The merchant ship isn't a big deal for me since it is optional. The stat gains seems like it would mess with the gameplay balance though. Instead of making the enemies weaker, they might have made it so your characters power up faster. Not sure I'm liking this. I know it is only the beginning of the game, but the demo didn't feel challenging at all. The only thing remotely difficult was the shadow giant and it becomes pretty easy once you get set up.

Are there any specifics on what is granted to players after completing the demo?

You can transfer your demo save file to the full game. The demo is basically the beginning of the actual retail game.

So here's the deal about the adjustments we made in bringing the game to the west. By and large, they mostly affect NG+.

  • In NG+, all the money and formations you designed now carry over. Any special weapons you created will also be available to purchase in the shop.
  • Drop rates for items and materials was increased across the board. Drop rate for rare items goes up in subsequent NG+. FICTITIOUS EXAMPLE TO ILLUSTRATE THIS POINT: The made-up drop rates for a rare item could be in the first 1st Game - 1%, in NG+ 5%, NG++ 8%, NG+++ 10% etc. Let me stress that these numbers are made up and I have no idea what they are for actual items.
  • Finally, the time it takes the trade ship to return is decreased substantially. The ship uses real-world time, and we've decreased the amount of time it takes to return.

Basically, the adjustments were to cut down on the amount of grinding in subsequent playthroughs, making NG+ a little more palatable for western audiences.

Perfectly fine with all these changes. I guess there was a bit of a placebo effect for players who were trying to look for changes in the demo. A lot of people thought the game was going to be made easier. I'm really glad it isn't.

Romancing Saga: Ministrel Song did NG+ pretty well. You were rewarded with more jewels in NG+ and that bonus increased with subsequent playthroughs. Increased drop rate for Legend of Legacy seems to be very much in line with what RS:MS had. I like it.

Yes, if you're not prepared. It has a death spell and the sandstorm attack can kill the entire party if you don't have water shield up.

In other news the unboxing video has been posted and my biggest concern of whether the book would be a hardcover has been addressed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K46TnpNyGFY

I thought it was pretty clear it would be a hardcover from the images. The best thing in the video unboxing is that they kept the inner game case character portrait artwork from the JPN version.

As for fighting the shadow giant, one of the reasons it can dish out so much damage at the beginning of the fight is because the dark element is dominant. This gives a buff to all enemies so you should be forming water contracts to offset this buff. I believe having water dominant also reduces all physical damage done to you. Combine that with the water shield and having everyone in defense stance, and the boss won't be doing much damage at all. The only thing you have to be careful of after set up is the confuse status effect and the instant death attack, but both seem rare. The dark element also increases a bit each turn so you must repeatedly spam water contract to make sure it doesn't become dominant.

Quick question, guys. On a scale of 1 to SaGa Frontier, how SaGa Frontier is it?

While I like all the SaGa games to varying degrees, SaGa Frontier has a special place in my heart.

Sometimes it changes, like how NA ended up getting a softcover booklet for mario maker even though the promotional pictures before release showed otherwise (EU and japan got hardcovers I think).

I knew the info I was just replying to the other poster, also to avoid having to re-cast water contract all throughout the battle it's easier to draw the shadow giant to an area where there is a natural water affinity on field.

Hm, I guess I've never had that experience with promotional pictures before. I didn't really pay attention to Mario Maker's pre-release but I'm guessing they used stock pictures from other releases.

The second part wasn't directed towards you. I was adding on to what you were saying for Lombax. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
