And you know all those technical details from? I'd love to learn how AI in FO4 is superior to say TW3. Can you point me to a source?

I don't know about AI, but we know for a fact that FO4 will have to keep track of MANY MANY MANY more things than TW3 ever does, consider it has to remember the placement of all items, which items have been moved and picked up, and all the items and states of every NPC in the game.

All I hope is that the washed out color is due to poor configuration on the screenshotter's end, and not an issue with the game itself.

I expected it to look a bit dated. I understand compromises for a vast open world. I am still absolutely shocked and disappointed if these screenshots accurately portray the game. I'm crossing my fingers this isn't what it looks like.

I'd gladly sacrifice some of the nicknack and useless items that previous Bethesda games have and the silly items-you-move-are-always-where-you-left-it mechanic. That aspect makes the world feel fake to me. It should only apply in your house.

It looks terrible but this will be a pretty fun game. I think I'll wait a week or two for the worst bugs to be fixed.

But yeah, the game is really dated visually.

Im the only one with a outdated GPU not having to be worried if it's going to look bad...already know the answer. Im hoping for stable fps ;/

It's been a long time, been a long time, been a long lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely time.
Honestly the HUD bothers me the most on those screens, still looks quite rough. I was hoping it was a placeholder for E3, but I guess now it's final. Hopefully we can at least change the color.

That neon green works alright for the pip boy, but shouldn't carry over to the HUD and menus. The green on green is an offense to my eyes.

A better (immersive) HUD will be the first thing I look for once mods start coming out.

urgh, i did want to get this on PS4 at first, but now i'm thinking PC would be a better bet.

Hopefully my HD7970 Will hold up until i upgrade when the new GPU's release next year, its paired with a 4790k @ 4.6ghz and 16GB ram, so i should be good, right,,,,,right?

Should be fine. 7970 is a good card.

Designing and developing games at The University of Salford Manchester. Something which I've been doing for 2 years now.

Also TW3 had generic AI that would stand around and do the same stuff all day. FO3, Skyrim and presumably FO4 (they share the same albeit modified engine) all have Systems that would have extensive AI routines that are even variable based on the players actions.

The environments outside look ok but holy shit those character models look HORRIBLE

Mother of god just dump that garbage engine bethesda.

Btw i am way more concerned about it being 30 fps all time than with visuals ...

It's also what their world builders are great at, and what their colossal modding community (one of the biggest, if not the biggest, reason their games remain relevant, played, and purchased for so long after launch) has become accustomed to. It doesn't look great at launch (or on console), but the level of versatility this engine offers is staggering.

Won't be long before it looks industry-leading on PC, just like with Skyrim:

The crazy thing about these gifs is that nobody says at what framerate these mods run....It looks pretty nice, but it would be nice to see an HD video of a character actually running through these forests and facing some enemies. I've seen many mods of the original crisis too, but how does it run.

Yet, the bigger issue is how a game leaves so much GPU power on the table, that modders have to totally change the look of the game to look a generation ahead. Vanilla Skyrim looks nothing like this.
Can you imagine what the stalker engine (x ray) people could do with a budget like Bethesda has? It is not a just world.
Always impressed with these guys impressive lighting engine and the immersion they create in their game's atmosphere, visually and aurally. I do agree with you on the possibilities if guys like the stalker devs and I'd like to add 4A games in there as well. I'm thinking with a good budget these devs would even outshine Rockstar.

Game definitely looks like it has its roots on last gen systems.

There was a massive step up from oblivion to skyrim though so hopefully ES 6 looks better

I can't believe this thread is so long though

I'm not hating on this game, but Bethesda seriously needs to hire new artists or something. These character faces look completely last gen. It's kind of embarrassing. And no, it's not the .JPG compression.

Not to derail, but is it possible now that mods will be available for consoles, for graphics mods to be available?

Was going to pick this up on console, because I generally prefer to play everything on the couch in my living room, but I'm wondering if maybe getting this on PC would be the way to go.

Intel i5-4590 3.30GHz CPU
8 GB RAM,
Radeon R9 270X

Anyone think the performance I get there will be much better than console?

It's hard to say at this point, but I'm inclined to think not.

Again, it's hard to say. Too few details are available.

don't worry, that's an idiotic comparison. Modded PC version vs unmodded console version.

This is what Fallout 3 looked like on consoles 7 years ago.

Make sure you blow these images up to 1080p if you want to make comparisons ;p

Actually, these are all promo shots. Can someone please post actual gameplay screen shots?

When I tried these really taxing grass mods with lighting/ENB mods on my PC (Gtx 680) it really did cut my performance by a lot, almost by half. It still ran above 30fps though but my is PC quite old now. People who have these newer cards will have a much better experience with these kind of mods.

I'm sure Bethesda would like some sort of control over what kind of mods make it to consoles. Graphical mods might severely affect performance, so I wouldn't count on it, but I believe there's still a chance. They definitely wouldn't want people breaking their game, considering consoles are traditionally closed systems as opposed to PC, and the scope of modding might be dialed back a bit.

I remember when Bethesda games were at the top of the graphics game, pushing crazy triangle counts back in the day. The underlying systems suffered for it though. There just wasn't much to them, and there wasn't really anywhere to go. Daggerfall was basically a glorified tech demo disguised as a hack and slash.

You remember those days, don't you? I don't know where Beth got the idea that people wanted something different, when this game could easily have played and looked like the tutorial sections of Final Fantasy XIII.

^_^

I don't know what people were expecting out of Beth, or the PS4 for that matter. It looks about like I expected to look. Not great, no. But that's never really been their thing. Fallout 3 didn't look good on 360 (or PS3) hardware, either. This isn't new. Saying this looks like F3 on PS3 is just flat-out incorrect.

The good news is that beautiful games come out all the time, there is no shortage of them, and it will probably be alright if Fallout 4 doesn't try too hard to be like them. I understand why players like better-looking games, hell, I like better-looking games, too. This isn't going to be that game, and it was never going to be that game. Nothing in all of my experience with Beth would even hint that this game would be different, and I'm looking forward to it just the same.

It's totally fine to say it looks like ass, but it's kind of like that old Far Side cartoon:

Isn't anybody worried about the systems? I'm worried about the systems, myself.

What a thread.

Graphically everything it's last generation. Just the res it's up. The complete lack of AO it's incredible and unexplainable.

I don't mind the graphics so much but I can see where the disappointment is coming from.

As long as the Xbox one version is a solid 30 frames I'm happy.

Their tech was on a different plane from most everything else when the first one released. Still remember how shocked I was with how impressive an atmosphere they managed due to engine, graphics, sound design, and world layout. Call of Pripyat with that global lighting during thunder storms at night=god tier atmosphere. One of the reasons I loved some of those FO3 and NV mods that made night night.

I think my main gripe with the way FO4 looks is how not just graphics overall are middling, but how the complexity of building scale is really starting to show the age of the engine. The gif with the deathclaw, walking through the towns, it really feels like all doors, basic objects like cash registers, buildings at large have the exact same scale relative to other Gamebryo/Creation games. Starting to feel like we're interacting with lego structures, which undoubtedly hurts immersion.

How do you make an "immersive" hud in a game like this? It looks just like the hud from the previous games except now it doesn't stop atl the action going on around you. Changing the color has ALWAYS been an option.

The developers recently tweeted that the consoles versions are in top shape, and that they're holding a solid 30. I wouldn't be too worried, especially considering the game doesn't look very taxing.
