NPD Sales Results for October 2015 [Up1: Xbox #1]

No, your absurd metric that put a 500k debut as very disappointing and saw no problem with a <1.5 million debut despite previous entries selling 3 million+

I keep seeing this 1.5 million figure - where does it come from? What does it represent? Physical? Physical + Bundle? All sales? US only? Worldwide?

And what do the "3 million" figures represent?

Are we even comparing the same thing?

Halo 5 and the X1 both number one.
And here comes the holidays right behind it.
They deserve it really. They've been busting their ass for awhile now.
Promising, Hustling,and Delivering.
Hope this trend for continues for them.
Don't get soft Microsoft, keep that Eye of the Tiger baby.

LOL

Sorry, this caught me off guard while reading through the thread.

A bit ignorant how this works, but if Halo 5 was #1 and possibly sold below 500k, does that just mean October overall was a shitty month? This counts only US retail right?

Despite being a gaf member for a while now, first time I've participated in an NPD thread lol.

It wouldn't be a great October, but I think we have had months like that in past years. That said, I really doubt Halo 5 was under 500k. Hints seem to be pointing at maybe under 1M.

So have we had alot of "so it begins" and "Sony am doomed" yet?
Nov and Dec will be a slug fest.

Not that I've seen yet but, we did get this.

Look at them shit Uncharted sales, in some ways it's such a shame more people could not experience the most overrated gaming franchise out there. Really do wish we were not getting UC4 AND rather TLOU2 but hey ho, Hennig had to leave and Straley was shackled with this piece of shit franchise once again.

Sony need to stop running their franchises into the ground, there is a happy medium between Valve releasing a game once every decade and Ubisoft shitting out a game annually.

The Amazon.ca list is completely unbelievable with The Division constantly on top.
I mean even the boxed PC version was in the top 20.
It says "updated hourly" but I have no idea how to interpret it.

so ture, and I remember last year ouya was like on top 5 almost every month hahaha

~500k is too low for an X1 exclusive FPS w/ BLOPS3 and BF around the corner? Seriously?

I guess that shows I have probably zero business being in an NPD thread. Hence my limited time in them (this one is my most active one).

I honestly didn't expect it to hit 1m, I'm sure there are others that have felt the same? Especially after Halo 4 and MCC.

Halo is a franchise that managed to break records with each main line iteration. In the NPD world, this will be the first numbered Halo to demonstrate a mathematic regression.

1.5 would be a huge drop off but given how much earlier Reach and then Halo 4 launched in the month than 3 and 5 (3 biggest, 5 most recent) you can see it was dropping somewhat anyway.

If Halo 5 had come out earlier in the month, it would have been a bit better (but less subsequently in November, obviously). 5 is a great game for me which I think will help repair the damage of people not sticking around in Halo 4 multiplayer and Halo MCC being broken

Hopefully. That and the fact that they seem to be serious about post release content.

To be fair, Xbox is the same price as well (even though it has been $350 for longer)
If you don't count the Kinect unbundling as a pricedrop, it has technically only dropped $50 in two years as well...

IDK, maybe they expect this to be another long generation, and so they are taking it slow with price drops...

Well i expect them to hit $300 mid next year unless they not going to push VR hard .

debut in NPD.

Halo usually debuts at 3 million+.
Clues tell us its <<1.5 million for Halo 5

I mean, hey, the thread's just kind of slow right now on the data, ya know?

The way I see it is: the price cut couldn't dethrone Halo month Xbox, which didn't even pull impressive numbers to begin with.

Lol im joking.... but i wouldn't expect anything other than that from sony

Huh... I thought the PS4 would win because of the price drop.

This gen is gonna be neck and neck in the states.

We'll find out soon enough if my bar was "ridiculous" or pretttty close.

The point is not the potential accuracy of the number but the absurdity of using it as a metric for success. What you are claiming as a potentially decent total would in fact be a massive failure and it seems like you know that and are just being obstinate at this point.

Playstation consoles don't have big price cuts until the slim versions come out.
It's still selling very well globally.

1.5m would likely be retail only (we never got a clear answer on that in the other thread, but it's a likely guess). 3m is what Halo 2-4+Reach opened at for retail. 50% drop first month for the game compared to previous entries in the series. Not a good thing.

The more I look at the software sales lineup the more I realise how UC4 should have been out this year.

It should have been out in Oct. Would have been a great NPD thread. Best of Sony's first party game vs best of Microsoft's.

Vin I love you but you aren't grasping the narrative here. I'm really bummed about it too bro. Best mp I have played in a long long time.

It was coming off of Halo 4 and a big negative online play MCC reception. Word of mouth should help as peeps realize it isn't broken and lots of fun. I feel Halo 6 will do much better. I say we see it chart decently in Nov and Dec.

I predicted on twitter that PS4 would take the month by under 50k, As I expected the price drop would help alot since it would be the first official pricedrop for the system.

That's not very nice.

I don't think Vin meant it seriously, or at least I hope he didn't.

Halo is a franchise that managed to break records with each main line iteration. In the NPD world, this will be the first numbered Halo to demonstrate a mathematic regression.

But when NPD doesn't count digital, when months being compared are different (sept/oct/dec), number of weeks in month being different, and install bases being different, it does make the comparisons a bit more noisy.

I'm not saying there isn't some "decline" (there probably is in raw figures), but I'm seeing a lot of variables not being accounted for in these comparisons.

I know people really want to assess Halo 5's performance in the market, but I do think lifetime sales are a better way to judge this...it's really too early to really say what quantifiable difference there really is after the dust has settled on everything.

It will do fine all year long, IMO.

It's got a HUGE eSports push as well as monthly content updates. Hell, we have one coming next week.

I fully expect Halo 5, on it's gameplay merit alone, to continue to do well and retain a population MUCH better than 4 did. Whether it comes CLOSE to H3 or HR is iffy, but Halo is certainly not "dead".

I wonder how many results i would find in your post history of "halo [...] dead/dad". Also notice that only defenders of Halo's honor such as yourself and senjutsu are always the only ones that mention halo and dead in a sentence. Also i have seen nothing in your posts to argue against the fact that Halo is not a "premiere franchise" anymore (note that cosmic did not mention the word dead, i worry that you may be seeing things that are not there). I see you made a bunch of excuses of "console space" that in the end only reinforces the conclusion that Halo is not a premiere franchise anymore.

What's Sony's 'loser' PR? Is it out yet, how good is it?
“We are truly humbled by the success of the PlayStation 4 and look forward to celebrating with our fans at PlayStation Experience in December,” a Sony spokesperson said. “Thank you to our community for making PlayStation 4 the top selling console globally.”

Not too shocked regarding the PS4, if you had planned to buy one there is no way you were really going to get one in Oct considering the massive bundles coming out in Nov. The price cut would've mostly just encouraged more people to buy the COD and SW bundles.

The Xbox One had a lot more reason to be purchased in Oct with Halo 5 so I think they would probably be a little more concerned given how low both figures were.

From the perspective of someone who lives outside the US (and Black Friday) though, the way BF is played up on here and the insanity I hear/read, I'm stunned anyone buys any consoles before BF tbh.

We'll see about that. MS won this month but I doubt it did much to dent the PS4's over 800k lead in the states. Next month will be huge for both consoles but PS4 really has the edge with COD and Battlefront. Black Friday see's both consoles retail for $299.

Don't know how much MS can dent the lead Sony has or if they can win Nov and Dec.

Man, your estimative being right or wrong doesn't equate to it being logical.

If I say now that next month COD will sell only 300k units it'll be a laughable prediction because the series always sold much bigger numbers than this.

If the game sells this number in the end, my prediction will be right but not less ridiculous, because what I did was just pull a random small number out of my head. Predictions are made based on available data, and the past data from Halo games pointed to a much brighter scenario.

The normal thing for a mainline game in a tentpole series is not dropping 50%+ between games. And that's a fact.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
Thank you. 10 months out of the year and they are supposed to be like

LONG LIVE SONY!

Like come on. Obviously they want Microsoft to have their moment and they got other stuff they actually care about which is global appeal lol

I mean, i'm not even talking about Global sales which are obviously important, but even in the US where NPD is tracked, they still have a sizable lead, and have like a 1 out of 10 loss ratio of all the months of the generation so far,

Just seems faulty to say they should even complain about their US numbers. In November and December, i could see bigger wins from them just based on the fact that that is when the pricedrop is really going to be important for people picking up the system with deals and BO3/FO4.

Halo 5 is still just one game for the holiday season. Forza 6 didn't make a splash and Rare replay aren't even on the radar

I bet I can get asscrud for 20 on Black Friday.

Yeah, but the Nope, nevermind...gross

I'm betting most people in America are holding on to their cash for Black Friday/Cyber Monday bundles.
Xbox taking Oct pretty much confirms they will take Nov and Dec as well.

Hmmm. I don't know if I can get behind this. Are you referring to the lineup selling systems? I don't know, I think it'll come down to how good the bundles are...

I think a lot of the PS4 sales shifted from October to November. The PS4 had 3 consoles in the Amazon Top 100 for October at positions 26, 39, and 89 that didn't release until November.

Welcome, btw.

Thank you!

I guess my followup would be, since I'm new to this, do we know with any degree of certainty that NPD is a representative sample of global (or even just national) sales? For instance, I've heard Gamestop isn't counted. If that is correct, then it might matter whether buying habits of Gamestop customers differ from other retailers that are counted in regards to whether the sample is representative.

I guess what I am asking is how accurate these numbers are at predicting whatever the "real" sales data is globally or nationally, physical and digital. Assuming we ever even get to know that real data.
