PlayStation 4 sales (sold-through) hit 30.2 million worldwide

MS wasn't stupid. Consumers just were not ready for their vision yet.
Next gen they will finally understand.

I honestly saw no advantage for their "vision" for me as a consumer. If my internet drops out as it does from time to time, my console is a brick? They can use more aggressive advertising since they can see what I'm up to?

Being able to sell and trade digital games sounded cool, but that meant I couldn't trade physical copies the normal way.

All in all, it just sounded like a sneaky way for them to have more control over the box I already own.

Congratulations Sony. I hope they do 40 million by end of next year.

If one assumes that they'll end the year with around 35 million (since they sold 4.1 million last year during the holiday period at a higher price point) and that 2016 will be PS4's peak year with, for speculation's sake, 20 million units sold, they'll have sold through 55 million units at the end of next year.

If PSVR really takes off, we could be looking at 60 million units sold at the end of 2016.

These are all, it goes without saying, best case scenarios.

Shu said at the PS4 reveal that the PS4 would play used games, alot of people forget that.

This. There was one quote where he said it wouldn't be any different. Everyone pointed towards Sony's silence at the time but truth probably was they were silent because they knew they could build the tension up to E3, where they tied it into their knockout punch.

Its amazing to see that Sony least successful console sold is 4th/5th selling console of all time.

1- PS2
2- PS1
3- Wii
4- PS3
5- 360

There is no advantage to a digital-only box that offers no secondary option to purchase games (i.e., physical media). I get the feeling that people want to feel exclusive. Why in the world should a console be digital-only if it can be both digital and physical? I haven't heard a solid argument for the former, ever.

Yep it was a big case of Sony Too .
The games media leading up to X1PS4 launch was the worst i have ever seen in all my years of gaming .
Sony Too , res don't matter , etc etc .

Agreed. It's kinda funny, that all the effort some of the media put into damage control had ultimately no effect whatsoever. Other than putting their impartiality and integrity into question.

Exactly, not even MS could communicate a clear answer for why that would help me, but I can see plenty reasons for why it would help MS. I think they got too greedy and put all their eggs in one frail basket.

Really interesting. I guess my estimates are far too conservative. If gaming news are to be believed, gaming is on Decline. Yet PS4 outselling its predecessors in same time frame is quite the opposite.

And to think, the Xbone extremists (not all xbox fans, just radicals) had the Cahoonas to say PS4 wouldn't it 30 mil by Xmas '15. :p

Yes gaming in general is in decline, its just PS4 thats selling good now. X1 and WiiU ni so much.

Thankfully guys like Sessler and Garnett Lee left the videogames media shortly after because it was impossible to take them seriously after 2013.

Goddamn Sessler, I still remember his rage quit from the industry. Guy sounded so butthurt people had the nerve to call him out on his crap.

Just a quick guess:

Microsoft - Probably in last place per sales (unless something drastic changes), but they don't even care because their box is a "media machine" and not a "games console" a la a smartphone. Will probably actually offer a new Xbox every year with incremental upgrades and a contract. Expect to see an even worse contraction of first party output (goodbye Fable).

Sony - Likely beats Microsoft worldwide and possibly beats Nintendo, though I expect them to have lost a shit ton of money in the process. All reasonable expectations would have them dropping out of handhelds, so expect a Vita successor.

Nintendo - Pretty much all that's left of the Japanese market, in Japan and elsewhere. Expect most or all major Japanese third party games to be U/3DS-centric, and few or none of the major Western ones. May or may not finish first again (they are about a year late to the market with Wii U) but that's largely irrelevant due to profitibility actions taken by Nintendo. Expect Nintendo to largely be the same in five years as they are now.

30.2 means it's going up by more than 200K between reports? Daily updates or weekly?

The last report was 29.3m. But that was shipped numbers. So since then they've sold through that shipped figure plus nearly a million more. Their shipped figure would likely be a couple million more than the current sell through figure. Especially since it's the holiday period and they're going to want as many units as possible on shelves.

That's incredible. Is it safe to assume XOne is half of that sold through by now?

Holiday will be great.

Next year should be PS4 peak year since i don't see another year being as good if everything comes out on time .

Yup. It was remarkable to watch, pretty eye opening stuff.

I went to my Best Buy to pick up something and I saw their Black Friday setup. Way more PS4s on sale than Xbox Ones. It seems like they're going to end up running out of the $300 Xbox Ones by virtue of them having a bunch of the Tomb Raider bundles.

That's a lot of PS4's.

Been in Aus too long, is Best Buy in NZ now?

Impressive numbers, hitting 35M before 2016 arrives seems possible.

Looking forward to PSX, next year we are getting some heavy hitters on PS4, I can't wait!

But Fox News has the most viewers of all major news networks by a pretty big margin...
what's the truth of Fox news? I have my people (like my brother in law) who swears by it, and basically takes it as gospel at this point and then others I see Snicker at people at the notion of taking the channel seriously? Very very polar opposites here but both strongly expressed. For me, I find it absurd to think in this day and age one source of information can be regarded as the truth, but I don't get why Fox is considered a crack-pot of hosts either, I'd seen very informative interviews on the channel before, even Glen Beck didn't seem crazy all the time.

I wouldn't call it being out of touch. It was more a reflection of the state of things back in 2012, before the new consoles were announced.

Nah they were out of touch you see it often on gaf .
I mean PS3 sold that well with all of Sony fuck ups .
Did people really see sony was going to mess up that badly again .
Just them coming the same time as X1 in EU was a sure bet the would win over there by a good amount.

Holy smokes. almost everyone predicted PS4 to be last place! Neogaf was seriously out of touch in 2012.lol

huh? How was NeoGAF out of teach?. Based on how 360 and PS3 were doing in 2012, everyone predicted Microsoft will again nail it in next gen given the money and how Sony as a company itself was struggling in every division.

No one saw it coming how Microsoft manage to fuck up. It was next level disaster. Bigger than RROD tbh. This is what I love about this industry. Anything can happen. I very much looking forward to next cycle. Whenever it happens.

Only argument I could see working is if they came out and said "digital only, all new AAA games now $39.99"

That may have turned heads. But no. They weren't going to do that.

My point is you had Microsoft's Xbox 360 as the lead console for multiplats and they are swimming in money. And you had Sony's PS3 which stumbled out of the gate, but managed to right itself at a huge cost to Sony's bottom line.

Next gen was seriously anyone's game at that point, before we knew what Xbox One and PS4 were going to be.

Back then, no one knew that Microsoft would royally fuck up the Xbox One as much as they did. I could see the PS4 still being in first place but you think the gap would be this big had the Xbox One matched the PS4 in both price and hardware and with none of the bad rap?

People do that a lot in GAF, but it's just reacting to what you currently know.

A few months before the PS4 came out, people thought it was going to be as strong as high-end PC's of the time.

I bet a few people now think it's going to sell more than the PS2 did due to this thread. It's all about reacting to the current news and not really thinking in the long term.

That just shows how out of touch they were \ how some gaf members just see things from a NPD perspective .
In 2012 Sony and MS were close in sales and this after Sony came out a year later in NA and 16 month later in EU .
It's also why you see people say MS has the bigger IP for eg Gear being bigger than UC .

In 2012 Wii sales has been slowing down for three years. as for 360/PS3 were evenly matched sales wise with more momentum in Sony's side.

I couldn't understand anyone who thought PS4 would flop I mean Sony were able to rebound from the following last gen:

-Sold PS3 at $600 and YET were able to sell faster than 360 (equal sales by gen end)
- Launched a year later than 360 (year and a half in EU) and YET sold the same number WW.

These two points can easily indicate that PS4 launching at the same time with similar pricing to MS offering would mean easy win for Sony.

EDIT:Even if MS didn't fuck up X1 launch, no chance in hell X1 would outsell PS4. Playstation is way bigger brand overall.

They were out of touch because out of the 3 gens, Sony completely dominated 2/3 other the ones where they had a constant amount of colossus fuck ups. Even without MS's dumb original policies, Sony would have won this gen dominantly, just that US and UK might be different in terms of sales by a few million. There's a reason even with their complete fuck ups, the PS3 is still the 4th or 5th best selling console of all time.

I wonder how many of these experts that had those hilarious predictions shit on Patcher every thread that is made about him. :D
