NPD Sales Results for November 2015 [Up3: Combined Hardware For PS4 + XB1 + Wii U]

I think it was all an elaborate plan by MS to make sure the game tanks so that they can buy CD for cheap from SE and then have their own Uncharted for good.

And then what do they do with a brand burned to the ground?
They rebuild it again with a multi-million multi-years investement hoping that people will like it again? :p
Doesn't sound like a good plan.

PS4 had the bundle (not counted towards NPD) and MS was giving away free copies during the launch week with console purchases (which would be counted towards NPD). I'm guessing people picked up BO3 over BF that week.

Yea but we knew how badly BF on PS4 outsold everyone just by the server stats that have been up since it released. I think it was like 150k to XB1's 75k concurrent players.

I honestly did not personally meet many Xbox owners who were aware of the deal or its release date. I'm not sure many gamers were aware of a new Tomb Raider.

Well they released the game as an exclusive for a struggling console, at the same time than no less than 4 heavy hitters, and only bundled the game with a less than attractive MSRP at a retailer where they historically don't perform well. You never know.

No you don't. Because that would make you stupid.

Oh yeah? Well what if I AM stupid then? Hmm? Hmm?

I'm just being facetious btw

I know what you mean. I was pissed man. It made me angry as hell. But it's way worse with TR. Maybe it's just because TR was more important to me than DMC.

Yeah I understand. I also think that the Reboot Tomb Raider is nothing more than an Uncharted clone and is made mostly out of iterative ideas that come from other games. Kinda like Shadow of Mordor. I can see why some people like it but unlike Shadow of Mordor, Tomb Raider has a history and a legion of old fans that may want something that isn't just a "follow the leader" type of game.

I have no sympathy for Microsoft or Square Enix, but I fear the IP might be in trouble after such poor sales. Either way, I don't understand the glee over a game failing. Especially a good one.

I don't doubt that there will be another TR game in the future. Sure, the game will under-perform sales-wise, but S-E should see this as a business decision that failed and not that the IP isn't relevant anymore. I assume they were compensated by MS for this arrangement which should make up for some of the loss, and hopefully come next year the PC/PS4 versions will sell to some respectability.

I am so happy Tomb Raider bombed. Thank you gaming Gods. Please destroy the reboot series forever so that I may have a chance of getting it developed by some company that actually understands what the goddamned franchise is about.

Big ass grin.

Amirox...come on man.

Were there even any commercials stricly for rise of the tomb raider? I onlu remember seeing the montage with a clip of tomb raider. Easily forgettable tbh

No, I mean I'm supposed to care that other people don't want to see it crash and burn. I don't, and they certainly didn't care as this company was destroying any shred of OG TR for this. I mean, I respect they can like it, and my hating it doesn't detract from that.

I actually like Tomb Raider series when it was Tomb Raider, and they want Tomb Raider when it is not Tomb Raider. That's fine, but there's nothing wrong with being happy about seeing what you feel is a terrible direction for a beloved series bomb.

you say all this like someone at CD is going to read it and go "hey, Jim, can we change things around and make a clunky ass PS1 game again? no, make the controls worse and the tits bigger"

they were of their time. I thought Rise was amazing and I'm not saying it's perfect but harking back to those old games isn't helping anyone. It's never going to be 1996 again.

Not really. Halo 5 released on that date and did 935k with bundles in that month's NPD. Need for Speed released on November 3rd.

The comparison is pretty heavily skewed towards NFS.

For any other franchise perhaps, but this is Halo. Just think, you are comparing Halo sales to NFS with only a week difference in release dates between the two. NFS.

Yeah this seemed weird. I did not see a single ad for ROTR. It felt like they were intentionally avoiding to spend money on ads. Then Fallout happened and I think I see why they "gave up".

Yes I do believe they had set the date before Fallout happened.

Edit:
I forgot who that crapgamer dude was.. Why did I watch that video? :|
He must be in a paid role.

People happy a game bombed...where is my crazy pills gif when I need it?

Yeah, so what? Are we supposed to root for every game to be successful now?

Bad games should fail. Games with stupid exclusivity deals and release dates should fail.

This is a sales thread, not a "love every game no matter what" thread.

Sure, but I think your ignoring context a bit. It's not surprising for NFS to chart above Halo because Halo 5 debut'd to such low numbers for the franchise.

The second month drop-off when the base-line was already low to begin with versus a brand new title.

Eh, You can always play the old games. Wishing this particular new reboot illwill despite a) the hard work and care that went into it and b) the gamers who DO want to continue to see it grow (which takes nothing from you), is self-centered. It's one thing to assert it's not for you, it's an entirely another when you're wishing that no one else gets to see more of it

This is so much utopian nonsense. Nobody in life ever says "well how dare you hate a movie and are happy to see it bomb, someone else likes it and it took hard work to make it!" Nobody says that shit, because that's like some kindergarten kiddie glove nonsense. This is the real world, adults can hate things like certain movies, books and games and be damn happy to see it not rewarded for what they individually believe is a terrible quality.

I don't care others want to see it grow, because I was in the series first, nobody cared that they destroyed that true original for this crap. Now I have to give them the courtesy they almost certainly did not afford to anyone else? These are games, not people. They are works of art or love or whatever, and people can hate them and be happy they bomb. Games are not human beings with feelings. OG TR was great and the only games of its kind, I think the new games are terrible and are like a zillion other titles that I don't give a shit about either (including Uncharted, btw). I am happy it bombed because I think it sucks and is a poison in this franchise. I've articulated at great depth (almost certainly deeper than any of these people criticizing me) before why I feel it is bad, so it is not from nowhere. I've earned my right to comment on how this development makes me feel.

So all that talk about Halo not even being in the top 10.... Also, Blop3 selling more on xbone is a shocker. The shooter crowd is still very well on the xbox platform.

Thank you for saying this.

My meter was overloaded by this thread and I was losing hope

I didn't say the gap wouldn't widen, i said the gap is contested. Since the 1.2 million peak the gap has never gone over that and I don't see anyway it will without Sony throwing the finishing blow. It just slowly moves up then shrinks down.

That's all I'm saying. Maybe 2016 will be it, but with as YOU agreed with, december up for grabs, them being close this month and MS changing their releasing strategy to include games the first half of the year you may understand I may be skeptical.

BTW i don't have an Xbox One.

Could you please show me, with numbers and simple math, how the gap is "slowly moving up then shrinking down" this year? Do you realize the gap is up YoY? Not down, not flat, up. Do you realize that this very November, in a complete reversal of what happened last November, the gap increased the most it has in over a year? That is literally the opposite of both "slowly" and "shrinking down".

You are taking the holiday season of last year (which was the result of Microsoft's aggressive price cut which isn't happening this year) and making it into some sort of pattern that is very clearly not materializing or being reflective of reality.

It's fucking Halo, on Black Friday month. How did Need for Speed of all franchises beat Microsoft's #1 selling franchise?

Didn't NFS have BF deals? Probably that. Halo wasn't discounted IIRC. Would be nice to see the gap in sales between those.

It's crazy. When I think back to Halo 3 and the crazy numbers that game sold, it's unfathomable that the franchise has fallen so much that it gets beat in the next month by a NFS title releasing a week later.

It still has to come out for another 2 systems, possibly 3 (is PS3 getting a port) it will sell more copies but due to "the deal" that won't be for a long while

How much will it sell on PS4 though? If it releases in November it'll run into the same problem, but will have an even harder time due to the fact that it will technically be old news. PC launch early next year will hopefully be decent, but I my hopes for PS4 sales aren't high.

People are happy this new direction isn't working in hope of seeing it go back to it's old ways. A one of a kind game series that is. Not "mee too".

The game didn't sell poorly because of the new direction. The game is fantastic people and has great word of mouth. People want to play it, they just can't because it's not on there system of choice and it's not too bothersome right now because it launched right in between star wars, call of duty, and fallout.

It's way worse than the DMC story. DMC "only" changed the design of the main character. But somehow, it was still a DMC game. The new Tomb Raider games are Uncharted clones imho. As a big fan of the first Tomb Raider games (PSOne), I fucking hate the new games and the new Lara Croft design. And the exclusive deal takes the cake.

Wait for the DMC fans to tell you how wrong you are! I'm not too invested personally, and I see your point. At least DMC and DmC are the same genre.

I think the main argument is that the "core" (heh) of Tomb Raider is exploration + puzzle solving + adventure, where as the new series is mostly cinematic action. That has nothing to do with PS1 controls or going back to 1996.

In saying that, isn't Rise a bit closer to the old games in that sense then the reboot was? Plus, it reviewed really well and has really positive impressions from most.

it's not that crazy. Halo is been on a steady decline for a while. it will still pull in great numbers by the end of the holiday season.

it's just not the juggernaut of Halo 3 days.

Using the rough available numbers, looks like PS4+XB1 averted falling back to Gen 6 numbers for the #1 and #2 systems in a big way! Pretty dang sharp slope! November sales are a bigger part of Q4 sales these days, but still, that's a really, really big leap. Nice stuff. (^_^)

If by steady decline, you mean starting with Halo 5, then yes, you're correct.

If the exclusivity period is tied to one year with no escape clause, there is no easy answer for Tomb Raider.

Perhaps the PC version can over-perform, though. That would be nice.

I mean... this isn't the Halo of old. Welcome to last month.
Well there's no way MS can see this as a success right?

I mean, what the hell happens if Gears 4 tanks as well?

I just want Halo to soar again. I think it can, just not by the people who are in charge of it now.
