PlayStation Exec Says First Party Game Lineup Was “Not As Strong” in 2015

Can we all just write 2015 off and forget it existed, please? It was horrible for me personally AND the games were terrible in the bigger picture.

Wasn't too hot, but next year looks insane with tonnes of 1st and 3rd party exclusives. That said I'm looking forward to the mental gymnastics that'll be employed to downplay it.

The quality and quantity of their exclusives has been a huge drop off from the latter PS3 years. I hope next year marks the turning point.

The launch window games were all clearly rushed but that isn't anything too unusual. Sucker Punch still managed to pump out a fairly decent game so not all doom and gloom there.

There were however a series of screw ups which left the release schedule pretty empty for a long time.

- SSM had a project in development for 4 years which ended up getting cancelled. This would likely have released this year

- I don't actually consider this a screw up but the directors on UC4 switched from the UC3 people to TLOU people resulting in that game being delayed. This was definitely slated for this year.

- Driveclub had numerous delays, a change in Game Director mid way through production and launched with a whole host of issues.

- The Order was allowed a lengthy development and nobody stepped in to tell them how misguided that product was. They saw the success of Uncharted and wanted to recreate it but focused on some of the most criticized aspects of that franchise (heavy linearity etc.) while doubling down on them. Meanwhile Naughty Dog recognized this and evolved their games mechanically with TLOU and now UC4. It is not enough to be simply cinematic any more as that impresses nobody.

Like others have said next year does looks more promising though.

No, I'm not going to write it off. I bought a PS4 three months ago and I own 15 physical games for it already. It sucks that the year was disappointing for you but it wasn't for me, at all.

Bloodborne is still the only worthwhile exclusive, also Horizon is going to be another Order, hyped up and then disappointing.

2015 was bad but 2014 was even worse.

Worst first 2 years of a Playstation console, PS3 in its "no game" years was better. Next year though seems to gonna be one of the best years in PS history if there's not many delays.

Rezogun, inFamous, Driveclub were good. Horizon had a long development, when GG doesn't rush they do amazing things like KZ2, I expect it will be the best WRPG in years.

Sony has some absolutely killer 1st party stuff coming next year, but stuff like Street Fighter V and No Man's Sky aren't 1st party by any reasonable metrics.

We got Bloodborne, The Witcher 3 & Fallout 4 in the same year, all spread out to boot. Exclusives or not - my PS4 got a lot of use.

Infamous shouldn't be listed with the other 2... It's pure garbage. Thank god we got Sunset overdrive though, it cured that itch for me.

Bloodborne was good. But yeah overally their first party line up was pretty sparse. They haven't really had any holiday games for two years in a row now so I hope that their stuff doesn't get delayed next year so they can have a strong showing holiday 2016. I'm assuming that's the slot they're mapping for Horizon. Please don't be delayed.

2016 will be better though as Ratchet & Clank, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4 I'm interested in from Sony IP's. Also some I think to be announced for 2016 (like the new God of War).

Then we have No Man Sky, SFV, Indies and whatever else gets announced at E3 and before.

This year the was only really Bloodborne (which is not my thing)

Tearaway Unfolded was released this year so I can't be mad at them.

But yeah, 2016 is gonna be insane... maybe even the best year in PS history.

All I need in 2016 is Uncharted 4 and Horizon: Zero Dawn and all is forgiven. The Last Guardian would sweeten the deal.

They had Bloodborne which was best exclusive experience of the year. The Order was really fun too if a bit shallow. Seems like a 3rd party year with not much standing out except Mario Maker when it comes to exclusives.

Yeah it was a weak year with the odd exception,Bloodborne obviously. There were some great Indies though.2016 definitely has some major hitters in theory if all turns out well, without delays

Gee, I'd like to agree with you but it looks really boring. I'll give it a try if I get the chance but I'm not going out of my way.

I've never heard of anyone describe Splatoon as "boring"... Definitely the freshest experience I've had in a while

2015 was actually one of the most disappointing years in gaming for me. And that was certainly down to a lack of big first party games on PS4.

I don't think there was really any game I really looked forward to playing this year and the big 3rd party games like MGS and Witcher were all a disappointment.

It was the smaller titles (non indie) that were the highlights, although at the same time, nothing too amazing or what would have been GOTY material in a better year.

I had Bloodborne...But yeh apart from that nothing for me. Looking forward to playing until dawn but i waited till that game was under £20 to play it, even tho I expect it to be good I wouldnt pay full price for it as i will be done in one playthrough .

Bloodborne was worth it tho. Suppose it's not officialy first party but never mind.

Now you have and remember we're all unique snowflakes with difference of opinion so if you ask around you'll be boing to get the whole spectrum of opinions. That's the thing about subjective opinions.

The only PS4 exclusives that I've latched onto so far are Infamous, Driveclub and Until Dawn. 2016 looks to have at least double that for me though so I'm not complaining too much.

Just curious why does (almost) every glowing post regarding Splattoon always have to use the word "fresh" in some form?

Not trying to single you out just quoting you.

Is it GAFmeme?

I've only played Bloodborne this year, other than that it was all third party games.

I don't think it's that hard for 2016 to top 2015.

This has been Sony's strategy all gen. Secure cross marketing deals for all the top 3 party games... Watch Dogs, Destiny, Arkham Knight, BlOps3, Battlefield, etc... It's been carrying them through spots that would otherwise be dry.

Not really. Lack of Sony's first party PS4 games is down to them supporting PS Vita and PS3 up until 2013.

Look at the list of retail games for PS3 and Vita published by Sony in 2013:
Beyond: Two Souls
God of War: Ascension
Gran Turismo 6
MLB 13: The Show
Puppeteer
Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
The Last of Us
Killzone: Mercenary
Soul Sacrifice
Tearaway

Compare it to retail games for Xbox 360 published by Microsoft in 2013:
Gears of War: Judgment
Zoo Tycoon

All games this year from Wiki:
Bloodborne
God of War III Remastered
Journey Collectors Edition
MLB 15: The Show
Tearaway Unfolded
The Order: 1886
Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection
Until Dawn
Helldivers
Beyond: Two Souls
Driveclub Bikes
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
Fat Princess Adventures
Helldivers
Hustle Kings
Journey
Guns Up!
Super Stardust Ultra

Those don't count because Reasons...

Sony had a very very weak year.

2nd party games are exclusives by 3rd parties with Sony being the publisher, like the Resistance series and Heavy Rain.

Not exactly. Insomniac and Quantic Dream aren't publishers. Resistance and Heavy Rain are first party games because the games were developed for a first party publisher. No licensing fees are involved.

You can call insomniac a second party studio as vernacular that they make games for first party and third party publishers. But that's a different subject.

whats your point?

The reason WHY they haven't had much 1st party is irrelevant... Doesn't change the fact that they've been using 3rd party partnerships to fill the void...

Seems to have been working...

Aside from the fact that Journey and Helldivers are twice.

BloodBorne is the only stand out title (Until Dawn is close) that is not a remake/port/expansion
