Automotive Discussion Thread | OT2 | Zero to pointless fighting faster than a GT86

I don't think so. They are just looking at your overall credit score and credit history as well as your history with their institution. If you don't have much of a credit history at all then that will make some difference in your overall score but as long as what history you do have is good then you should be able to qualify for a good rate.
They had told me differently. I was offered a high rate due to not having a credit card for a certain amount of time, but I have excellent credit. My only other option is financing through a dealership, but that sounds like a huge hassle.

Are they giving a lower rate the the credit union? If so it would be worth it to you in the long run.

thought I would share my project in a bit more of detail

I put a newer Toyota 2.4 in my 91 toyota MR2.

its only about 170hp and 175tq right now, but I plan on building and turboing the engine after it gets running and smogged. there is also a factory TRD supercharger I am thinking of using instead.

its a challenge putting in an engine no one has ever put into the chassis.

Please keep us updated on your progress. I always wanted an MR2, so I'd like to live vicariously through you. Irohazaka awaits.

Yeah, Camaro's are the new chick cars these days instead of the Miata or Mustang.

Lots of women I know love it for some reason, whereas lots of dudes get hard-ons for Mustangs.

Meanwhile, us Challenger fans are few and far between.

I'll take my Hellcat anyday of the week over a Stang or Camaro.

For me:
1.) Challenger
2.) Mustang
3.) Camaro

I don't know why but suddenly I'm reminded of all the times I've seen red corvettes parked in otherwise empty church parking lots on weekdays

So you are going to pull 6 (well 5) years out of the entire history of Mustang vs Camaro to dispute what I said? Really? The Mustang has outsold the Camaro 42 times out of the last 51 years. (See here: http://www.torquenews.com/106/ford-mustang-outsold-camaro-42-times-51-years) There's a ton of history between these cars and it's been going on a lot longer than just the latest refresh.

Anyway, for the most part I agree with what you originally stated so I'm not even sure what we're debating at this point.

Everyone knows Mustangs USE TO outsell Camaros. But there are so many factors and variables at play for that reason. The Camaro in the 80s and 90s was never competing against the Mustang in sales. Ford produced 2-4x as many Mustangs, and a massive chunk of them ended up on rental lots. GM purposely limited production of Camaros because it often competed with cars within its own lineup, such as the Corvette. Camaros were stealing sales from Vettes at one point, which was a huge concern for GM.

Ford had no other sports product to protect from the Mustang. It was just the Mustang for them. Everything Lincoln and Mercury had were just whales with no sporting traits whatsoever. Meanwhile GM had sports coupes from Pontiac (Firebird was a rebadged Camaro), and the Corvette. To some extent Cadillac even touted the ETC as a sports coupe, which was LOLs - but that's how they saw the product in their line up.

My point is that the Camaro and Mustang never competed in sales, simply in testing and performance. It wasn't until the Camaro came back and GM decided to say fuck it and let all of their sports coupes have free reign that the Camaro started its sales dominance, because the production numbers allowed it. So the reason Mustangs outsold Camaros wasn't for the reason you stated, it was because GM intentionally didn't want to compete or produce enough.

Out of curiosity, what makes you think you have excellent credit if you haven't had credit card(s) for very long? Length of account history is a fairly major contributor to your score.

I took delivery today and I wrote out my first impressions on Camaro6. If anyone is interested I can post that as well as pics (don't want to clog up the thread).

First off, I would like to thank Becky Doyle and Rodgers Chevrolet one more time for being awesome. I'll start this off with some pictures and then I'll get to my impressions. It's a 2SS Mosaic Black, M6, Adrenaline Red interior, NPP exhaust, Magnetic Ride Control, and Nav. Sticker was $46,420.

Exterior
The pictures of the 6th gen really do not do it justice. In person the car is much more sharp and chiseled. The front end is menacing, the sides are very sleek, and the rear (which I'm not a huge fan of) seems to "pop" much more when in person. The spoiler has been a controversial topic, but I actually like the way it looks. I'm not a huge fan of the tail lamps, however I think the blacked out option from GM looks very good and I can't wait to order a set or tint the red portion of the current ones. The SS badge on the rear is in a stupid spot, but the front looks good and the Camaro logo on the side looks good. The car is also noticeably smaller, especially when put side by side with the Z/28.

Interior
This is probably my favorite part about the 6th gen. The styling is really great, and there is a VERY noticeable increase in the quality of the materials. A lot of leather and metal throughout, and just well put together. MyLink is good; it has a lot of features and it's very responsive. The interior, just like the exterior, looks and feels a lot smaller. The rear seat is even more useless compared to the 5th gen and the visibility is probably just as bad, but it never bothered me on the 5th gen and it doesn't bother me on this one. My only complaint is that the gauge cluster display is missing a lot of the screens and features of the Stingray. The performance menu only displays one thing at a time and it's just a lot of wasted display space. Oh, and I HATE the electronic parking brake.

Engine
The first thing that I noticed with the LT1 was the torque: GM claims 455 lb/ft, but my butt dyno measured it at one metric fuck-ton, and it's all available down low; the car pulls at any speed, in any gear. The characteristics of the engine are VERY similar to the LS7 in the Z/28. The biggest difference between the LS3 and the LT1 is the power delivery. The LS3 has noticeable peaks and valleys in the power band, whereas the LT1 is extremely linear all the way up to redline (just like the LS7). The second thing that I noticed about the LT1 is that it is not as free revving as the LS3 or the LS7. On the LS engines I felt like the redline came up too quickly, whereas the LT1 screams to redline and feels like the cutoff is just right. The NPP sounds great in track mode and for $900 it's a no-brainer. I also want to note that the engine compartment is much nicer looking than the 5th gen.

Transmission
It's the same TR-6060 we all know and love. It's much smoother than my 2012 and on par with the Z/28. The throw is slightly longer than the short throw option in the 5th gen, but still shorter than a S550 GT. The rev match is a really cool yet practical feature and I see it making me a very lazy manual driver.

Suspension
The roads were wet today so I didn't really get to push it hard in the corners or get anywhere near the limits of the car. From my limited experience it's clear that the car is much more agile than the 5th gen. Turn in is much sharper and there's less body roll. The steering is also weighted very nicely and is pretty responsive. If I had to describe it in one word I would say "nimble", which is crazy considering that it's a Camaro. The Mag Ride is magic and I would recommend it to anyone that plans on using the car as a daily or even a weekend car. It rides like a Mercedes E Class when in tour mode, a 1LE when in sport mode, and one notch back from a Z/28 when in track mode. It's well worth the $1600.

Overall I'm really impressed and I can't wait to drive it more; it's so much better than a 5th gen. If I skipped anything that you wanted to know just ask!

And here's one last picture of our whole Rodger's Chevrolet stable:

It would be based on the credit check I did, which shows a high credit score. When visiting the credit union, they had said that I needed to pass a length in history in order to get the lowest APR. Would that be the case if I already have a high credit score?

Not sure this appeals to the Gaf market, but who cares I'm posting because I love it. Back in November I decided to buy a brand new Jaguar XF. Unfortunately it isn't arriving until at least March as the InControl Touch Pro software with the virtual instrument display isn't ready yet. The wait is agonising!

It's had great reviews and the test drive surprised me with just how much fun it was to drive on the limit - it was a damp day but flying around country roads gave just as much excitement as my existing car, with very responsive handling despite the car's size.

Essentially the car will look exactly like the below test car we drove - XF Sport, 180PS engine, Italian red with black pack. The wheels pictured are 20" £2000 optional extras - I couldn't justify that cost, but did pay for similar coloured £800 18" wheels. Girlfriend included with the car too.

This is replacing my 2012 BMW Z4, which I feel I have outgrown both in terms of both a limiting 2-seater and also I want a more mature car to drive around. I will miss the hardtop nature and it will be a bit slower 0-60mph, but right now each time I see the new XF on the road a realise I have made the right call. Such a massive jump over the existing XF.

YES!

I own a 2012 XF 5.0 right now and I'm getting either a 2016 XE-S or XF 3.0 Supercharged in April once the lease is over on the older Jag. I test drove the XF-S with 380HP and I quite liked it a lot.

I'm just hoping that the XE-S will be out in time, that's ideally the car we want.

Having financed at a deal numerous times it's not much different than financing through your credit union. It's about the same amount of paperwork, overall. You just have to be prepared to say "NO" to extended warranties and add-ons that they might try and push on you.

I have a soft spot for Jaguar. I've never driven one but they are such beautiful, elegant cars and the few customers of late model Jags that I have talked to really love them. I am sure that once you get your car the wait will be worth it!

Great first impressions! Thanks for sharing.

Got to second one of your comments: in person, the new 6th gen looks significantly smaller and more compact than the outgoing model. It's sharper. It's more aggressive, and it even - to take your description - looks more nimble than the 5th gen.

How tall are you? I'm 6'2", and on the lowest seat setting, I could feel my hair hitting the roof. Honestly, I just wouldn't be able to deal with that. However, the two vehicles I've been both had the sunroof, which on most cars, a sunroof delete would add at least another inch of ceiling height - if that's the case here, I think I could manage. What have your impressions been?

I'm 6'1" and I don't have any issues with my head hitting the roof ( and I don't think the seat is all the way down). I have not driven one with a sunroof yet, so I can't comment on the difference between the two. I actually didn't get the sunroof because I wanted to fit in the car with a helmet.

Good to hear. I don't have to fat of an ass, so I imagine if you're good at 6,1", I probably am, too. Sounds like a roof-delete will help. Need to sit in one soon.

I adore the looks of the Challenger, and - if I'm being honest with myself - that's probably the path I'll go down. With that said, we had Camaros in my family (brand new '95 Z28, brand new '02 SS seven years later), and so they have a soft spot in my heart. I think the new refresh is a phenomenal performance car. The amount of power and quality of tracking components in the price range is pretty much unrivaled... so it's hard to say "screw that" and go of the boat that is the Challenger ;p

EDIT: I've read a lot of reviews and blogs that say the "feel" of the new '16 SS gets surprisingly close to the outgoing Z28. You have both. Any comments? What is the Z28 giving you that you feel you're still missing in your new SS?

I really like the look of the Challenger but it's just too damn heavy for me. I sold my 2012 SS because it was too heavy, so I can't even imagine how much the Challenger would annoy me. In terms of the Z/28 to the 6th gen I would say that they're similar, but it's a very different experience getting there. Everything about the Z/28 is big: big motor, big chassis, huge tires, massive brakes, giant splitter etc. and the weird part is that it drives big too, but it doesn't even matter. The Z/28 is the opposite of a Viper or a C6 ZR1; those cars are working against you, and they're just waiting to bite you in the ass when you get towards the limit. The Z/28, on the other hand, will work for you under one condition: don't drive it like a bitch. The Z/28 rewards you for driving right at the limit. You can't give it 7/10ths or 8/10ths, it requires 10/10ths 100% of the time in order to make it dance. But, when you overdo it, it will break away progressively and is super easy to control. The Z punishes the road for you and it's a really interesting driving experience that I would recommend to anyone that gets the opportunity.

I haven't been able to thrash the SS like the Z/28 yet, but from my little experience I can say that it is similar in feel but not in character. By feel I mean that the steering is communicative, the shifter is smooth, the pedal engagement is nice etc. By character I mean that the SS does not drive nearly as big as the Z/28 and doesn't punish the road like the Z/28. You can drive the SS at 6/10ths and 7/10ths and be completely satisfied.

Don't want to sound to fellate-y (lol), but that exactly the kind of explanation I was looking for. I think I know exactly what you mean.

The Z/28 is just an absolute monster of a vehicle. Lucky you to be able to experience both to their limits.

I took my car to Baltimore and back to northern NJ to drop my cousin off... We did a bit more than 400 miles and my new car (2013 Honda Accord EXL V6) did 34 miles per gallon. O_O That was amazing (85/15 - highway/city)!!! :)

It is so nice to finally have a car that does decent mpg on regular gas with a V6 and be fun to drive at the same time. :)

Any news/rumors about the 2017 Subaru sti? Are we expecting it to finally have a new engine?

I haven't seen anything on NASIOC yet to confirm this. I hope so, and I hope they can push a bit more horsepower/torque. The Focus RS is coming in 2016, so maybe that will put pressure on Subaru? I doubt it, though. They've sold a ton of WRX/STI in the last two years.

Haha don't worry, I'm glad I was able to explain that well enough. The best way to describe it would be that the 2016 is an iron fist in a velvet glove and the Z/28 is an iron fist in an iron glove. I love both of them so far.

After looking at what my grandfather's GM discount could do for me, I'm starting to really want to buy a Cadillac ATS. Was kind of wanting a Camaro, but I think I'd rather sacrifice performance for luxury and some added practicality. Even the 2L Turbo at 272 hp is a significant upgrade from my 169 hp Malibu. I'd probably go with that engine, because it'd allow me to get the 6MT. I've never owned a manual car, so I figure I ought to at some point.

The ATS has four trim levels: Base, Luxury, Performance, Premium. Going with the Luxury trim how I'd probably equip it would cost me around $35k. But I'd be somewhat tempted to jump all the way up to the Premium trim, which would be around $42k with the interior and exterior colors I'd select. That's a significant jump, but would get me magnetic ride control, among a bunch of other things. I mean, if you're going to buy a Cadillac, might as well do it right? I'd probably be looking at a monthly payment close to my mortgage payment, but I can't drive my house :p

Do it.

How big is the discount? $3K below invoice?

I think it's more like $1500, with invoice being about $3k below MSRP, but looks like there's some additional discounts available to everyone. Adds up to quite a bit:
8mw8viS.png
Do you get GM employee or GM supplier discount? I got the supplier discount and saved around 3k on the Z and 2-2.5k on the SS.
pillock, why did you buy the 2016 SS if you have a Z28?
I don't drive the Z/28. I got it last November 2014 and it has 650 miles on it so far. It's winterized and then I only take it out on nice days or to the track (trailered). I had a cammed 2012 SS (daily) that I sold in August and the 2016 replaced that.

Do you get GM employee or GM supplier discount? I got the supplier discount and saved around 3k on the Z and 2-2.5k on the SS.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

Where's the best way to configure costs with such a discount? My grandfather also used to work for GM and has said multiple times he can sign some papers and get me a discount - but have no idea what that looks like.

EDIT: Nevermind, .05 seconds of Googling just answered it for me ;p

I'm getting quite close to this point.

I really wish front plates weren't mandatory in Ontario. It will ruin the look of the car...

Front plates are mandatory in MD so I'm just going to zip tie it to the grille or drive without one until the hideaway plate holders are released. Let me know if you have any questions about the car and I'll try to help.

Congrats on the Camaro!

I got a chance to drive one two weeks ago, and that low end torque was crazy. It probably makes as much at 2K RPMs as my car does at peak. lol

It just felt so big to drive still, but then again I'm a smaller guy used to Euro cars.

Thank you! My favorite thing about these engines is the torque. It's just so much fun. What car do you drive now?

I took my car to Baltimore and back to northern NJ to drop my cousin off... We did a bit more than 400 miles and my new car (2013 Honda Accord EXL V6) did 34 miles per gallon. O_O That was amazing (85/15 - highway/city)!!! :)

It is so nice to finally have a car that does decent mpg on regular gas with a V6 and be fun to drive at the same time. :)

That's a good feeling isn't it? V6 Accord is a pretty sweet spot between reasonable, usable everyday performance and an excellent family hauler/ daily driver.

Ever since I got to ride in a friend's CTS-V a few years back with the Corvette motor and a 6MT I have had a bit of a "thing" for Caddy's performance cars. I remember the CTS-V as being a bit of a mind blower because here was this good looking Cadillac but it was ANGRY and a bit of a hoon-mobile. I think it would be a good and enjoyable car for you so if you have the means, go for it!

I'm driving a Cayman GTS right now, so you imagine how it felt to step out of it and right into a Camaro SS. Unfortunately, the one I drove was automatic and the route was so small that I didn't get a chance to push it, but I do remember the engine being tremendous and the interior being a big upgrade over the outgoing Camaro.

Happy new year autogaf.

So as I was driving home from a NYE party last night (I wasn't drinking), I reach a tunnel and do the thing most gearknobs would do- drop both windows, drop a couple of cogs and plant my right foot for a little bit of noise.

After my fun was over, the drivers window refused to go up! When I press the switch, there's no sound at all. Does anyone have any ideas on any checks I can do myself before I give it to Nissan and their £170 an hour diagnosis fee? Given there's no sound, possibly a busted motor or no electricity going to it? I did notice that I can't feel the top of the window in the sill which I've never noticed before.

Driving a 2007 350z if that helps.

Window regulator/ window motor. I believe it is a fairly common issue on a lot of 2 door sports coupes, especially as they age.

It's the window motor. Happened on my 2006, as well. Give the door panel a few bangs on the inside and it could wake up the motor for you to roll it back up. It's a quick fix many use.

If you take it to Nissan, don't let them charge you a diagnostic fee. Tell them the exact problem and that's it. There is literally nothing else that could prevent the window from working and this is an EXTREMELY common issues on all Nissans from that era.
