Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PC Steam on January 28

It's not about avoiding I'm a sucker for Tomb Raider so it's about double dipping and if they want me to do that they have to offer a complete experience.

I feel like you're fishing for an avatar quote. The notion that you're not getting the "complete experience" if the game lacks the button prompts associated with your platform of choice makes zero sense no matter how you approach it.

And someone will probably make a mod for that in the first week anyway

Is Denuvo generally known to affect performance. I preordered due to finding a great price but now I'm concerned. I think batman scarred me
nobody knows, no way of testing with or without it as there is only version with it.... batman is the victim of WB for the most part
asn for the other effects of it its unknown , surprisingly people are not even really testing what it does and what not and got pacified from doing so by marketing statements , even after historically bad experiences with the protections from the same devs.

As far as i remember, there was no Tomb Raider Definite version release for PC a few years ago. After all this MK X PC support bomb, im loosing will to pay any money to such developers. Is it worth supporting this release?

This has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've read in a while on gaming side. "sucker" for tomb raider, but getting bent out of shape over something that is extremely common on pc due to standard apis in use. Hate to break it to you, but you won't be getting the 'complete' experience on PS4, so are button prompts really more important to you than things like framerate?

Jesus, a complete experience like on consoles, where you know, you get the button prompts for the controller you're using. Since it is still not standard it's a valid question. Nothing more, I've never said anything about graphics.

THe Definitive Edition was pretty much the PC version with a few enhancements.

The PC version is being handled by Nixxes, which I consider great. However, if there is another 'Definitive' Edition, it won't likely release on PC. But since this game is on all current consoles, the chances of a 'Definitive' edition are really unlikely.

I say trust in SE and Nixxes.

Tomb Raider (2013) PC release was phenomenal and didn't require any "Definitive Version" like X360/PS3 did on XB1/PS4.
Unless you wanted the Lara Face 2.0?
Overall, Nixxes did a great job on TR 1.
From everything I read/heard, RoTR is a great game and deserves every success via PC and PS4 releases.
As far as MK X goes, that's WB. As far as WB games on PC, I'll let this weird guy say it best. (first part of the video)

Yeah that's the weirdest part. I'd think that advantages the PC version has compared to the console versions would weigh more heavily than button prompts. I play with a DS4 as well and I don't even notice the different prompts anymore. To wait 9 months for that...what?

The PS4/xbone versions of TR lacked tessellation, contact-hardening shadows and motion blur was heavily paired back. Framerate was far, far from stable 60fps in countless cases.

Can't wait to 100% again. It was a ton of fun exploring. Going to plug in a DS4 and just enjoy this beauty on PC, with a steady framerate and wonderful hair graphics!

As someone who owns both the Steam Version, and has played that at 4K60, vs the PS4 version, I preferred the PS4 version in this case. Was it perfect or "definitive" in every way?

No.

But the way's it was superior, it was by a mile imo. In many ways this was more artistic than technical, or simply a result of devs seeing things they missed/would like to change from the first go around.

One example.

And this is coming from someone who refused to buy this game for his XBO (even as a b2g1 sale) because I didnt want to settle for inferior graphics. Also rebuilt my PC to play Witcher at 4K rather than play my PS4 copy I already owned.

TR DE was an outlier. I do wish they had released it on PC so I could have the best of both worlds. (Much like I wish they would have released the Cryengine 3.0 version of Crysis made for consoles on PC, though in that case, regardless of new features/engine upgrades the PC version was still legues ahead)

Have to agree on this one. I could easily max out the PC version yet still prefer the PS4 DE - and not just because of Lara's new face.

still view ps4 button prompts as "huh thats a nice addition", its far from becoming a standard like the xbox pads, especially when there isnt even official driver support from sony (it doesnt matter what apps make it easy, until there is something official from sony expecting all games to have button prompts is setting yourself up for disappointment)

TIL that its not a complete experience without the dualshock prompt buttons. Thats a new one indeed.

PS4 Button prompt support don't exactly need driver support.

you just need an option to change it in option menu or something. so even if we use Xbox controller, we can still change it to PS4 prompt.

i don't know about licensing fee though. I remember Sony trademarked it's symbols

I'm still amazed that they didn't put the DE on PC while it has actual differences, while they had no issues releasing the Sleeping Dogs "Definitive" Edition on PC, and that was actually overall a graphical downgrade with very minor improvements.

PS4 Button prompt support don't exactly need driver support.

Sure, driver support isn't needed, but it's not a stretch to assume that if Sony were to officially support the DS3/4 on the PC, then developers/publishers would be more inclined to include PS button prompts. That being said, they are becoming more commonplace, slowly but surely, particularly with regard to indies.

I saw my cousin play Far Cry 4 with a DS4 on PC once. (He wanted to play on his TV instead of his monitor.) I was surprised that the game even supported the touchpad without any additional drivers installed.

I played the 'Definitive Edition' of the game and it was crap compared to the original on PC. The differences didn't necessarily look better, just different. Like colour and contrast tweaks or a couple of scenes with added smoke. Lara just looked strange like she had something wrong with her face. The framerate was all over the place too.

I disagree, there was a lot more dynamic foliage and Lara's skin was much better. TressFX was toned down though and, as mentioned, the framerate was a bit iffy.

I was unimpressed with the PS4 version I played that's for sure, did not seem like a dramatic difference to me at all, but there were improvements regarding foliage and Lara's model. The lighting was not improved at all, as you said simple contrast tweaks.

Even without a framerate counter I could clearly tell that the framerate was absolutely not stable, it drops heavily in many, many situations and felt really unpleasant to me. The claims that it sustains 60fps are factually incorrect, plain and simple.

I would not trade my PC version for 10 PS4/xbone versions.

I've just checked the promo. Apparently, it's only for those who bought the cards in Asia Pacific Region. I just needed to fill my card serial number on the website and I got the code instantly

Edit: Here's the page looks like (ASUS): http://www.asus.com/event/VGA/Rise-of-the-Tomb-Raider/

Haven't tested yet, but even if we bought an ASUS card from any region and then try to claim the game by picking any APAC region, it might still work.. Who knows.. lol

Apparently you can use the PPID + SN from any GTX970 or GTX980 no matter what region you bought it in, as long as you select one of the Asia regions in the drop down box. Works even if your card came with a game originally. You can do that to get Rise of the Tomb Raider for free.

I bet they'll fix that loophole.

You'd avoid a game you want to play for 9 months because of button prompts?

I mean, I can kind of understand it. If you're used to Playstation buttons, it can be quite annoying—ESPECIALLY in a game that uses QTE's.

I'd probably just work around the problem by playing with a keyboard, though.

I've used different controllers my whole life. To this day, I use n64, vita, ps3, Ps4, xbox, mouse abs keyboard, And now the steam controller. After a while I managed to become fully capable of translating buttons from differing controls, so for me it's not bad. Especially as I plan to use the steam controller for this game. But I know a lot of people simply cannot do that at all.

To me, it's not so much the different button combinations as it is the on-screen prompts not matching the controller in my hands.

I have no idea why this matters, since I don't look down at my controller while playing, but it makes a big difference for some reason.

It's particularly bad if I'm using non-matching button prompts AND a controller I'm not used to. I can generally adjust to playing a game that uses Nintendo's ABXY button setup on any controller, because I'm a Nintendo guy, but if I'm playing a game that uses Playstation button mapping—which I'm far less used to—I absolutely need the controller to match the game.

I am still miffed that Sony still uses their own custom buttons. ABXY should just replace them, as they are more common.

I used to have an issue remembering where the PlayStation buttons were, until I memorized that Triangle is pointing up, so it's the top button. Just stare at this image for a while.

Did they already fix this? I tried just now and choosing any country (APAC or other) just loops back around to choosing your country.

Nope, I've just this second got a coupon code from ASUS using my 980's S/N and PPID, bought here in the UK last year from Amazon.

Didn't realize it puts the game in your account, rather than giving a key though. I already have the deluxe version of Rise, so I'll have to hand the coupon away rather than a key.

Well I wonder what I am doing wrong... I tried every APAC country, multiple browsers, and a VPN to make my connection come out of APAC and it still just loops me around.

What are the odds you want to hand me the coupon ;)

Edit: Just installed Chrome and still nothing. I will give it another machine a shot.

Edit 2: Another machine worked! Preloading now!!!!! I think not having Java on this machine was my issue, but I am ready to go now! I didn't get a free game with my card last year so this works out great.

I just set it to Japan and it went through. No VPN, just default Chrome.

Next time I replace my GPU, I'm writing down the PPID. Fuck taking that out again.

edit: If anyone can give me a good reason it's theirs.

After how bad Arkham knight was, I wish I could request a copy of Tomb Raider from Nvidia, especially since I bought two 970s.

well I didn't even recieve any games because there was no promo at the time. I finished arkhem knight, runs great on my machine.

Shows off the PC version, have a guy who have never played the game or the reboot before and neither of them know anything about the PC settings. :p

High preset and 4xAF breaks my heart seeing that they seem to have som beefy hardware in that PC.
