I'm on the fence, regular or deluxe?
If you've got a GMG account, Deluxe with the 27% off code. You get everything Firaxis is putting out in the first half of this year in one nice package & don't have to worry about A) hoping 2K puts a big discount on the season pass during the Summer Sale (which might not happen, given how Steam sale discounts are getting smaller) or B) pirating the digital OST if you want it later, since 2K doesn't sell them separately.

Looked through this thread and didn't find this so here are the Mac specs:

Mac System Requirements

OS: Mac OS X 10.11.1
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel
RAM: 4GB
Graphics: 1GB Nvidia 650M or later, AMD 7xxx series or later and Intel Iris Pro.
Input: Keyboard & Multi-button Mouse

From:http://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/articles/215908468-XCOM-2-System-Requirements

Am I going crazy or is that lower than the PC requirements? I have a 2.4ghz i7 intel processor, 8gb of ram and a 930m and yet my processor and GPU don't meet the PC requirements. I guess that's good news for me?

Man, right now I can't see how this game can fail. I can see how Dark Souls can end up not being good; but even excluding the "mods will fix it", this game basically has one CG trailer and the rest are all just pure gameplay videos where everything looks amazing.

It's one of the most straightforwards marketing campaigns I've seen. They basically gave the game to people and said "play it and record it for the rest of the world to see it" and... it looks right. It looks like a very fun game.

Hard not to get hyped.

Yeah, it's very reassuring that they basically gave the game to dedicated players 2 or 3 months early to play in full and all impressions have been positive.

At worst it's a slightly improved EU/EW with better customization which is fine by me.

Any links to those early impressions?

It's significantly lower. My guess is that Firaxis just wants to cover their butt with the Windows system requirements. I have a 650M on my laptop, and I don't think there'll be much difference between running it on OSX and on Windows.

Might be worth mentioning that they were not given exactly the full game; it stops after 3 months or something. But in those 3 months, it's basically the complete game minus some balance changes they might have done in the past month.

And since the streamers can't show cutscenes, there's not really spoilers either (unless you count seeing units and enemies as spoilers). Anyway, the point is that maybe somehow the middle to late game might suck, but those impressions of the early games are amazing.

Something that worries me and im sure its totally wrong, I was watching the totalbiscuit video of the preview build and he said that he had 12 hours and that red bar on the worldmap that I assume indicates when the aliens win was almost full... I dont want a 15-20 hour xcom :(

I hope this isn't true :(

But if it was close to the aliens almost winning then that just means he failed it in 15-20 hours? considering i've wiped squads on classic in the very first mission of EW that's not too shabby

Like I said im sure its a wrong assertion, but it still jumped out at me

I'm nearly certain that they've said that certain missions help thwart the avatar project, which reduces the bar. And I know I've seen Dark Events that specifically raise it so you can target those to keep it down at the expense of the others. I'm not too worried about it for now.

Seems like he was losing the game. :X
Maybe he just ignored the dark events that focused on the avatar project (is that how it is called the red bar of failure?) because of reasons.

I think one early thing to learn as new players might be how to juggle dark events since the ones that don't advance the aliens project are usually very very bad gameplay wise, like making their reinforcements better or giving their units some kind of bonus or something. I can totally see someone, like, over-ignoring certain dark events.

Edit: I mean, ok, that's how I can see this game failling; somehow the mid and/or late game being horrible, because that's the part of the game we haven't seen yet; but devs have specifically addressed this, so... I'm still confident.

“XCOM works best when the player is under pressure. In Enemy Unknown, at a certain point, the difficulty kind of inverted, to where you were kind of mopping up every mission,” Solomon said. “We really want to make sure that in XCOM 2 it never really flips like that. We want the player to be under pressure the entire game. It kind of fits, thematically, the idea of you being a resistance group. You never actually rise to the point of taking back the governments, necessarily. Instead, you’re always the underdog. Even when you build up a lot of support around the globe, you’re always an underdog.”

“We really want the players to never feel like they’re entirely on top of the situation,” the XCOM 2 director added.

It's actually a weird quote to excite me. lol. "Yeah, I'll never have the upper hand and everything will always be horrible! All right! Just what I wanted!"

Yeah except GMG is a key selling site so I'd have to wait for a Steam sale. And I'm sure Firaxis would try to prevent modding in paid content, right? What would stop people from modding in all the season pass stuff?

They are not a key selling site, although they have some key selling tendencies. It specifically says that the source of the XCOM 2 keys is 2k on the pre-order page.

If they get them via shady grey market intermediaries they say "Authorised Distributor" for the source. I think all of their Ubisoft keys are via resellers.

I didn't notice that "underdog" quote before. Sounds amazing in the best-worst way possible.

Jake Solomon & co. just get it. I love it.

This new trend of games coming out in the usual european day (friday) as opposed to tuesdays is so bizarre.

Im in europe btw so...feel our pain I guess? :p

How will the fact that I won't be buying dlc affect matchmaking/online for the game? How is the online for the first one / this one if anyone has played it? Currently playing the campaign for the first one and I'm hooked. Finally bought it because of the humble bundle.

Pretty sure it can go up AND down. Also, mods.

Speaking of TotalBiscuit, his preview video on XCOM 2 gives a great overview of the basic stuff I've been wondering about, like PC options and squad customisation.

Dude's always been good at covering the basics that others gloss over.
Wait, this has multiplayer?

Of course. The first one did, too.

It's squad vs. squad-styled competitive stuff, not co-op or anything so don't get your hopes up.

Multiplayer was never the focus of the series, and while EU/EW had it, it's buggy and very few people played it. It's kind of fun to mess around in with a friend, though. The DLC shouldn't affect the online content if the multiplayer's going to be like in EU/EW.

The Mac system requirements are listed as a 650M - significantly lower than the minimum for Windows. My guess is that you'll be able to run the game fine, and that Firaxis is inflating the minimum requirements to cover their butts. That's just my own conclusion, though - I'm not very knowledgeable about these things, so take it with a grain of salt.

What's the point of VIP then? Using the code on the regular Digital Deluxe edition comes out to be a few dollars cheaper...

Usually the available codes are only 20%. And besides its all a marketing thing anyway, to make you feel special or something.

It was useful when they were still doing the store credit for achievements thing since you can't use credit and coupons together.

Oh the red bar can go down? That settles that then

940M here, I hope you're right! I mentioned this earlier, but I like to think that if my machine could run EW/EU on medium-high settings, it ought to be good to go for XCOM 2.

Didn't someone at 2K say that turn-based games were dead and we should deal with it?
2K said it thus:
mcvuk.com said:
BRINGING BACK XCOM
(article from 2011)
Last year 2K announced cult turn-based strategy series Xcom was to return – but this time as a first-person shooter. Fans recoiled at the apparent bastardisation of their beloved series, but Hartmann says there’s good reason for the change of direction.

He explains: “The ‘90s generation of gamers all love Xcom and we own the IP, so we thought OK, what do we do with it? Every studio we had wanted to do it and each one had its own spin on it. But the problem was that turn-based strategy games were no longer the hottest thing on planet Earth. But this is not just a commercial thing – strategy games are just not contemporary.

“I use the example of music artists. Look at someone old school like Ray Charles, if he would make music today it would still be Ray Charles but he would probably do it more in the style of Kanye West. Bringing Ray Charles back is all fine and good, but it just needs to move on, although the core essence will still be the same.

“That’s what we are trying to do. To renew Xcom but in line with what this generation of gamers want. The team behind it is asking themselves every day: ‘Is it true to the values of the franchise?’ It’s not a case of cashing in on the name. We just need to renew it because times are changing.”

The crazy thing is that XCOM: EU was in development when he said this.

Declassified began development in 2006, and XCOM: EU in 2008. It took a while before either got off the ground. Firaxis had a lot of trouble nailing down the core gameplay--the geoscape and TU systems especially. They went through many revisions and Jake Solomon, the lead designer, was reaching his wit's end on how to do it... eventually figuring things out. Meanwhile, Declassified was in some form of development hell this entire time, being a Bioshockalike, then a Mass Effect 2alike, until finally 2K decided to get it out the door no matter what. XCOM: EU ended up releasing in 2012, and Declassified in 2013; we know how the rest goes...

All of this is assuming my memory and Wikipedia are to be believed.

It could've all gone so differently. XCOM (later Declassified) could've been the true death of the franchise, but instead it was all but separated from the core franchise--renamed and forgotten--while XCOM: EU resurrected the series, and also strategy games (in a way).

It's been quite a journey to get here.

Three years ago, Polygon published a fantastic article about this and XCOM EU development.
