Kimishima: Young Generation of Nintendo Developers to Lead Forefront of NX and Mobile

People resorting to calling Miyamoto and Co. old and dinosaurs as a means to shun them, champing at the bit for their retirement is high in the list of things that piss me off on this forum, the nonchalant ways in which they brush off their accolades is just as entertaining. Have some tact please.

He'll be 50 in 5 years and still look young and deliver some awesome games because youth is eternal for him. His body and mind are forever young.

The saltiness of Smash Bros. fans sustains him and keeps him young :p

I hope old dinosaurs in Nintendo, like Miyamoto, let young developers make the games they want the way they want, without conditioning anything at all. This news are great news for me. I'm getting more thirsty for the NX official announcement.

Grandpa Miyamoto created great games many years ago. I love Mario platforming games, Zelda is a great IP, and there are many more games to talk about. But unfortunately, he didn't do nothing good after Pikmin.

The rest are mediocre and forgettable games. There we have Wii Music (we will never forget that E3). Too much obsession for motion controls. The gamepad is practically useless, they don't even know how to justify it, and it's used in many games as obligatory for useless stuff. Ironically Pikmin 3 works better with motion controls than the gamepad. And Starfox Zero is having huge problems with controls. And remember Project Robot and Project Guard? Nobody gave a shit for those games after they were shown to the public.

Mr Miyamoto did great games, but his time is over. It's time for retirement before making everything worse than it is. Let young people do their best.

Wow, that shows that you don't actually know what Miyamoto does. Miyamoto has managed to turn the direction of games so many times and make them be utter classics, even when they aren't his games. Yes, that hasn't always worked (Sticker Star), but successes far outweigh the failures. Saying he needs retirement just because of his age is disgusting.

Yep, no respect.

I bet all these young whippersnappers learned most of what they know about game design from the likes of Miyamoto, etc...

Hubworlds don't have any platforming. Mario is a platformer.

Wandering around staring at shit in a hub world isn't what you do in a Mario game, it's what you do in an open world game, or a slower paced exploration platformer like Banjo Kazooie. Mario is all about obstacle courses.

SM64 seems like a starting point for a very good hubworld, removing it did not make the game better in and of itself.

I'd love to be taught game design by Miyamoto tbh. I know he will destroy a lot of tables with me but I would do my best to learn everything.

Yeah, in contrast to all those western manager positions at SCE Japan Studio, Capcom, Namco Bandai, SE Japan, Tecmo Koei .

Literally scraping the bottom of the barrel to find something to complain about.

Some people are of the belief that hiring a western manager will suddenly turn everything around and they'd suddenly appeal more to western audiences.

I dunno. I wouldn't mind if Nintendo bought a couple of western studios like Sony has. Also give some autonomy back to NoA. NoA/NST used to make some things like 1080 Avalanche, it wouldn't hurt to rebuild more in the west.

The games don't have to aim squarely at Sony or MS's audiences, there was a time when Nintendo had Conker's Bad Fur Day. They need some diversification in this area.

I feel like Nintendo goes out of its way to ignore its western consumers sometimes.

So I'd like it if they released stuff for us sometimes, and not just games either.

Miyamoto will probably still be at Nintendo when he is a hundred and ninety. And when he finally does pass on he will likely use his ghost powers to upend tea tables all throughout the company.

Deals with iTunes and other music publishing places would be nice. I like that there are all these Pokemon soundtracks there now from the Pokemon Company. I mean, if they can't get CD's over, or if they're all limited run, iTunes worldwide would be great for everyone after the run is over. Also would be neat if their new account system could also give you coupon codes for their stuff on iTunes. I mean, they do seem to want the account system to be robust and reach more people.

Have to say I think this is great news, shows confidence and trust to the young generation of Nintendo staff...and those, strangely attacking Miyamoto should hang your heads in shame

It's not just one thing with them, though.

Nintendo World Store Exclusive was a long-running joke for a lot of people. That's unfortunately the reality of Nintendo, even today. Look at how much Splatoon merchandise Japan gets. What's NOA/NOE got to show for it? Those Kid Icarus AR cards that were such a huge deal for the game weren't even sold in stores in NA. I'm sure there's tons of other examples out there as well. It's this kind of thing that makes those audiences shun Nintendo after a while since it's one thing in a pile of other frustrating things they do.

This is a good point too. I'd love for more of this stuff to come over and hit more stores. Splatoon is doing well and it needs more merchandise on store shelves outside of just the amiibo. I want some shirts and hats even if it's store exclusive like Wal-Mart or Target.

Aren't they renaming the World Store as Nintendo New York? I hope this means they'll launch specialty stores across the US (Not like retail chain though, they probably gotta be special destinations.

I hope so. I hope there is at least one close by where I am in Texas, but I have my doubts one will show up in Texas.

I hope so. I think Nintendo can look quite insular at times, with Iwata, Miyamoto and Reggie being the public face of the company.

I would imagine a lot of good stuff goes on behind doors and i can't see why Nintendo shouldn't celebrate that.

Having the Treehouse stuff at E3 was a great way to start showing people the Nintendo beyond Miyamoto , Iwata and Reggie etc. And Iwata asks, and using Shiabata and Bill for directs too.

To be honest i think the industry in general would benefit for people knowing more about developers and the development process. There are a few household names, but it not quite the same vane as knowing about Film Directors.

miyamoto is a great fucking designer. it is correct to say that not all of his concepts are fantastic, but he can get a project under control and deliver a fine result. yeah i don't really care about blowing in dkcr (or the rest of the game, but that's not actually his fault), and i think he might try too hard to stick to a concept when it's not working (star fox zero being a recent example).

but he's the guy who turned twilight princess from an overambitious possible disaster into the best 3d zelda. he and kondo knocked sense into the ead tokyo guys who were making super mario galaxy a baby game for babies, and had them make a cooler and more difficult game. then for its sequel, got the extra shit out of the way for what is basically the best 3d platformer (or at least, tied with mirror's edge). then he did it again for paper mario, a game sorely needing that sort of direction for a handheld release, especially after super paper mario (which was notable at the time for being the biggest single waste of potential in the company's 100+ year history).
I keep hearing this about TP's development. Do you have any sources for that? I'd love to read about it in greater detail.

To be fair, he didnt say that he needs to retire just because of his age. He says its because of the games that he have made more recently. That said, his age doesnt really matter that much. Creativity isnt bound by age.

This sounds exciting if they can pull it off.

they talk about it in some detail here:

http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wii/twilight_princess/0/3

takano: Ok, I'll go first! (laughs) As usual with a Zelda project, the last few months entailed a feverish effort to polish the game, and we got it into really good shape. But at the same time, the contents of the game were being changed to a degree that at times was downright frightening. The story, minor features, everything. And needless to say, it was Miyamoto-san's appearance on the scene which caused all this!

in 2004, mitsuhiro takano was supposedly going to be the director while eiji aonuma was made publisher. then something happened that year and aonuma became the director (for the last time), and miyamoto assumed the role of producer. takano was the cutscene director and did other work on the game.

support for this idea is the conversation directly preceding the above quote:

iwata: With regards to the game's design, this may well be the most "Zelda-esque" topic of all! (laughs) I would like to ask about Miyamoto-san and his habit of "upending the tea table."3

All: (laughter)

Iwata: Now, I wonder who the best person to start with is?

Ikematsu: It may well be Takano-san.

yeah, i get the idea takano had his role severely reduced. he seems to know most about the changes that were made to the final product. at least, he talks about them more than anyone.

Holy shit!

Some real NX news!

And some good news too!

Its about time they cash in their new talent. Miyamoto cant be ruining games forever :p

I'm not sure if i like this since most young Japanese people have more experience playing mobile/handheld games than console ones.

Maturity, bitches.
There we have Wii Music (we will never forget that E3).

Ah Wii Music, the game that is probably talked about more by those who have never even played it than those who have. The E3 showing was just extremely poor and not at all reflective of the final product.

Most of the young people they have and have hired over the years are also fans of other games not made by Nintendo and made by Nintendo. Many also have nostalgia for older games too. Yusuke Amano being a fan of Perfect Dark. Don't forget that Splatoon came about because the devs are fans of shooters and wanted to make one of their own.

Plus as TheTrin brought up earlier in the thread, not allowing younger generations to have active roles in a company is a common problem in Japan in general. Nintendo is bucking this trend and that's a good thing. It will offer newer perspectives, new ideas, filling in gaps in genres (like Splatoon), even revitalization of a company.

The new blood will have a better understanding of what's cool too. Back in the hayday, Mario was cool, then Sonic was cool, then Crash Bandicoot was cool (I think?). So having a younger perspective helps here too.

This is a fantastic idea!

I'm also a developer @ digital agency.

One thing many company's have to learn that the future depends on the Young Generation.

Smartest decision i've heard in years

Because its crowded market and it always was a fable that if Nintendo had 1st parties and 3rd parties, they would be the defacto winners.

People are tied to brands and ecosystems.

It's also the biggest market and Nintendo's is shrinking to non-existance. They can't just invent a new market out of thin air like the Wii, those customers have moved on.

Despite numerous flaws, Nintendo is still on a 70M units consoles sold market. I doubt that the key to growth is to be a "me too !! " but rather to offer sth others dont.

I reaaaallly don't agree with your examples (TP is the most boring mainline Zelda, SMG1 > SMG2, etc), but I agree being a good designer is more than coming up with interesting ideas. It's also being able to scope, get shit done and have a keen sense of what will turn a profit, and this is invaluable experience that Miyamoto will always have above younger designers.

Still, the man is and always has been a toy designer at heart, and it shows in his recent games which tend to be more gimmicky and eschew growth or stories, compared with contemporaries in the industry. On the one hand this is what makes Nintendo great and always has, but also led to a sometimes monomanic approach to games.

Its not like Kid Icarus Uprising happened, sold well over a million and might be Nintendo's best game this generation but also most ambitious one.

The thing is, the railshooting segments made up only about 1/3 of the game. The bulk of Uprising was on-foot as an TPS/action game hybrid.

Most definitely.

Even the Kimishima praise that's resulting from this, as if it's not obvious that they didn't think up of all of this stuff in the last month and all of this has been conceptualized under Iwata and has been in the works for a long time. It's just sad that it's only now starting to bear fruit and he couldn't really see it through to the end himself.
