Canadian Gaming "Deals" and Discussion Thread 6: Sorry, We Can't Afford a New Thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
It's hard times when in a DEALS thread, people feel compelled to hide the deal they got.

*happy for anyone who's lucky enough to get a deal*

Context. A screenshot with the caption "don't hate" is vastly different from the same screenshot with the caption "omg I can't believe I got this".

Post whatever you want. Just don't be a douche about it.

well, after the blacklash some people were getting for posting deals they were getting from amazon csr's, whether it was justified or not i can't really blame them for avoiding any potential drama.
Are those really deals, though?

I mean, when I think of a deals thread, I think... "hey guys, this is a product I got for an amazing price and I wanted to let you know about it so you could take advantage of it too". Like that awesome dude who clued in me to that bargain-priced vacuum cleaner during Black Friday.

I don't think of "hey, look at this amazing 'deal' that only I got and you can't get because I scammed this ill-trained outsourced minimum wage Amazon rep to give me an additional 30% discount on top of this existing deal that they were already taking a loss on - I bet you wish you were me but you're not so ha ha".

There are deals that everyone can partake in that retailers are consciously advertising and then there is exploiting a broken system that will only do the retailer harm and is purely being done to brag and not help anyone.

yeah it becomes really frustrating to see people gloat about busing a CSR and acting like they did no wrong honestly.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
The upside to waiting over a week for Amazon to ship SFV is the server issues will be sorted out by then, hopefully.

Bestbuy shipped Fire Emblem SE at last. That person yesterday was misinformed I guess.
Supposed to receive my Amazon one on monday unfortunately since it shipped late yesterday.

Amazon's policy for honoring price errors wins them a lot of good will and repeat business. Several individuals in this thread (myself included) prefer shopping with them during E3 promo time for this very reason. Shipping times be damned.

That 19$ Xenoblades!!!

<3 Amazon, keep on shipping slowly.

It's happening!

I'm refreshing my emails every 5 minutes hoping...It has to be shipping soon!!!

Indeed it is. They've no reason to, and any other retailer would cancel them all, yet Amazon chose to bite the bullet.
I don't agree I think that most other retailers would have done the same thing, I am appreciative they are honoring the price and I wish mine would ship. I just don't think amazon is the only one who would have honored it.

Contacted Amazon CSR and he upgraded my Fates SE shipping to Arriving tomorrow by 8PM.

This is why I don't rag on Amazon's Customer Service, even when my Twilight Princess mishaps occured, because most of the time they will go out of their way for customers and do things they don't have to. I can't think of any other retailer that would.

Do they even make profits on those E3 promos? Retailers's margin are about 10-20$ depending on the game so when you give 20-30% off on a 80$ game...

Yeah, plus their price protection. I'm still salty with the $19 Xenoblade price error. I made a mistake for not ordering it on Amazon and just relied on Bestbuy -_-

Yay, just received confirmation from Amazon that TES+ and TE2+ have shipped.

Hopefully I will be rocking SFV with an arcade stick come Monday.

Heads up, looks like Best Buy removed the restriction of ordering titles in pairs for their promotion. I was able to pre-order five games and still got 20% off each.

Amazon also has the benefit of random price drops; my Amazon pre-order of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is currently sitting at $62.99 before the 30% off from the E3 promo.

Certainly not eb games...they fucking have the guts to raise the price of your preorder if they had it at the wrong price initially...

Best Buy would most likely tolerate a small pricing mistake but not something that huge.

Pretty much this.
For mistakes that big I would see the latter giving out $5-10 off promo codes + cancelling.

... Except that time with FS and the MGR Revengeance LE, but that was an error done to changing orders in their system, rather than at the time of placing the orders (as the LE didn't yet exist) so it seemed they didn't catch on.

Edit: And yeah, there is a clear difference between a deal and exploiting CSRs (multiple in some cases).

You're right in that using the term 'deal' isn't the best word in this instance. And yes, when you come off as bragging about the mistake that went your way, it doesn't help anyone. However, I still think that based on what was said by others in the thread, that most of those who benefited from pricing errors were as a result of an accident and that they didn't purposely go out of their way to try and deceive the CSR.

Using myself as an example during the winter sale, the discount wasn't applying correctly for whatever reason (and yes, both items were listed as part of the sale) and I contacted a CSR who told me to go ahead with the checkout who then said they would manually add the discount. This was only after they checked each item to confirm that they were indeed part of the sale. They then proceeded to make a giant error on their part, and i only saw the discount after I closed the chat.

And to be fair, when this whole thing started, others were initially posting screenshots of the prices they got so that the rest of us could use them to see if a CSR would match it (I used a screenshot last year that someone here posted during that winter sale; i even linked this thread to the CSR).

Now, you are right, that some people shouldn't be posting screenshots of the price adjustments they managed to get just to say "look at what I got guys!" since I find that its in poor taste.

I think that in the future that if people were to get a larger than normal pricing adjustment due to a mistake on the part of a CSR, don't post screenshots about it or really talk about it. But if you do want to just so that others can try to price match it, at least be humble about it.

I really don't understand why people get so offended when they see retailers give others goodwill or just provide them with changes to their orders that benefit them or simply end up with a price glitch they didn't even realize was being applied. They come here and share, people can attempt to get the same deal. Some people are successful while others are not.

Just because you weren't able to get a similar deal or goodwill gesture doesn't mean the OP is gloating or needs to have people complain about them. Someone got a good deal, they try to help us by posting pictures and tips. People posting and acting excited about getting extra % off is normal! You would be excited too! The offense people get is not always genuine, a majority of the time people are simply jealous and act like what you did was horrible to make themselves feel better. Let's not be fooled by people like that.

Everyone here needs to cool off a bit and focus on the fact we are 5 PAGES AWAY from a new thread!

New thread titles!

That's not how the law works. They have to honor mistakes but not ridiculous prices. The law is there to prevent misleading ads and bait and switch. There were multiples cases lately in newspapers that didn't work out. Like Sears had BBQ on sale for 70$ and they were worth 1600$. They quickly realized their mistake and cancelled orders both in store and online and didn't have to honor it even when people complained to the OPCQ. One lady got 600$ out of it because she kept complaining and they offered her a substitute item with a deal on it and she accepted. Court then took it as a bait and switch and she got 600$ for the case.. They obviously didn't want to sell it for 70$ since it's worth much more and they advised customers it was a mistake. No one in their right mind would believe they would want to sell something for 0$. Maybe you will get lucky or they don't understand the law.

Did anyone else who had SFV set to arrive on Feb 25th also order Garden Warfare 2?

My order went from "Not Yet Shipped" to "Preparing for Shipment" back to "Not Yet Shipped" and I was puzzled. Saw the GW2 Review thread and realized they might be trying to group those two to ship at once. Just cancelled GW2, hopefully this expedites things.

Amazon just sent me an e-mail re-confirming that Mafia III is coming April 26th, and isn't just a placeholder date now. I guess it's really happening?

I agree with you. However they are not cancelling the order (the right action + sorry about this immense price error), but they are planning to charge me full price, when I placed an order at 0$ + 5$ shipping.

On the subject of taking advantage of CSRs for discounts: I 100% agree with UberTag. Are they deals? I wouldn't post it on GameDealsCanada.

"Pro-tip: If you keep trying, you may be lucky & find an Amazon.ca CSR who will give you an extra discount on your order. Good luck!"

It is social engineering and not entirely different from sending out spam pretending to be a relative in need in hopes of getting some poor sucker to send you money. Like UberTag said, it's telling that people are not posting how to get the deal like normal deal but instead, you find them brandishing the end result.

One of the primary reasons why I participate here and not on RFD is that we have some decorum around here

I caved and purchased one of those rainbow six siege gold editions that were on clearance from best buy.

69.97 for the game + season's pass... that's a deal, right?

.................can you return clearance items if you change your mind? lol

Being a video game, only if you don't open it.

But I thought R6Seige reviewed well?

That's a great deal.

I don't think you can return clearance. Not sure though.

it did review well but it IS an ubisoft game.. I only bought it because it had the seasons pass, but the base titles tend to drop in price pretty significantly. Still, its' currently $10 cheaper than its regular edition counterpart.

well thats bad

I'm pretty sure you can return clearance at Best Buy, I don't think they have any 'sales is final' thing.

well thats good

now i really don't know. thanks guys? haha

but seriously, thanks for the replies, all.

My order was grouped together with Dark Souls 3 (yikes!) but I talked to a CSR about it and Amazon gave me priority shipping on the item. My status currently says shipping today.

got my TE2 and TES+ last night, got em working on PC with SFV ... (also played some Infamous on PS4) and they're working beautifully. Glad I decided to keep em - still wish I had matching sticks though.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you can return clearance items at Best Buy, I remember doing it when I was buying Christmas gifts last year.

But keep Rainbow because that game is fucking awesome.

Just looking at Best Buy preorders and I figure I'd ask if anyone had any opinions on the Japanese games coming out?

Nights of Azure
The Witch and the Hundred Knight
7th Dragon
Langrisser
Stranger of Sword City
MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies
Grand Kingdom

Are these mostly trash games...? I probably would have preordered them unconditionally before the price increase, but now not so much.
