The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

Man...i just cant click with chun. I wasnt the best player in sf4 but i could hold my own with her decently.
I'm getting my rear end handed to me in Sf5. I seem to be having more of a fighting chance with Laura...maybe its because people dont know the match up yet...
I refuse to quit chun though...not after 20 yrs lol

Played some lounge battles with maddogmax and went 4-5 overall. Out cammy/Karen battles were pretty epic. So that's what I'll share, overall it was 3 sets to 2 but we split on cammy/Karen.

Here's the first 3:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_fh9B76wsE

then I switched to Nash, perhaps not realizing he might have wanted a rematch, he won vs. Nash 2-1

then we did a rematch:

Critique please, for both of us (he asked me ask). I was starting to feel the heat of being repetative, like "oh fuck he's got me down and i have nothing" kind of panic lol

other than to extend combos, is there a particular time as Ryu when it's good to pop the v-trigger?
To cancel an unsafe move if need be (like a blocked sweep) or to increase the execution window for you to punish something on reaction. Simple example for the latter: see someone jumping towards you -> activate V-Trigger and anti-air with EX Shoryuken. His Critical Art also has the potential for some fancy punishing given its speed if you think outside the box; take a cue from Combofiend's Necalli.

So I had an interesting but but mostly frustrating experience tonight. I dug up an old Tekken 6 wireless PS3 fightstick I bought on clearance at Best Buy many moons ago. Since I have been having a little difficulty on my Hori FC4 fightpad with consistently inputting commands on the d-pad for moves. I wanted to try out a fightstick and see if that would do better for me.

Not a chance. The stick felt very loose to use. It felt almost impossible to get off the move I wanted. The stick was too sensitive. Dragon ball punches, hurricane kicks, they were impossible to input correctly. I felt like I was taking steps backwards when using the fightstick.

I don't know if the fightstick being wireless had anything to do with my results or the quality of the stick. I feel like I do much better though with the Hori FC4 pad. I don't think I'm going to return to the stick moving forward.

Edit: Something I really wish I could view is someone using the fightpad on youtube. I want to see how other players are holding the controller and using it.

So, apparently learning a combo, then breaking it down and practicing them piece meal works :D

I'm liking it. Going to post some vids of a couple fights tomorrow, I feel like I did better this time Around. I'm getting more patient and am in more control of my character. Feels good when you do better :)

Anyone have any advice for someone who presses buttons way too often? I've noticed I have a tendency to just always be hitting something as long as I'm not being pressured and get punished often because of it

How do I upload replays to YT so you guys can help me out?

I'm trying to *learn* from my losses but I feel totally helpless and have no idea what to do. I don't have time to try any moves or combos because I feel like I am always on the defensive

You wanna play me? I can probably guarantee you that I am worse. No fight game experience at all. What timezone are you on? I'm still stuck at work for a couple more hours.

PSN is charlie_lun, ID is Charlie_JP

I'll def be around a lot on the weekend, so even though our time difference is big (I'm in Japan) we should be able to play!

I don't really understand canceling. If i wanted to cancel MK into MK tatsu, do I put the input as the animation for MK is happening?

Gotta call it a night. I feel that hopelessness and frustration sinking in, this is the ~5 hour point where I usually give up on fighting games, but I'm not going to this time.

Just gonna get a good sleep and come back tomorrow with a calm mind and try again.

I'll send you a friend request on steam. We can play over the weekend if you want. I practice Laura.

Linking combos can be so frustrating. It's like I do it once, then it takes me a another 100 to do it. It drives me nuts because I feel I'm pressing buttons at the same pace when I did it right and wrong. It's hard to solve a problem when you can't find the issue. Maybe I need to sleep on it.

What are my options on wake up as Ryu? I'm really not sure what I should be trying to do. Whenever I get knocked over I feel like I'm giving free combos to better players who chase me down and slaughter me on wake up... I know I shouldn't shoryuken, at the very least.

High? Low?

And I thought fighting games were tough. It's just a matter of blocking at the right time! Thanks professor.

Usually low, you just need to be ready to react to an overhead.

Would I be able to get some criticism of my day 2 chun if I posted up some videos? I know a few things I need to work on but I really want to get better asap.

Thank you! Will keep that in mind.

My current head scratcher is how to pressure when in close with standing normals. It feels like I always get beat out by some shoryu style move or a crouching normal.

I read that ryu's standing lk is good for pressure, probably because it hits standing or crouching.

Hi, is this the "Sucks at Fighting Games Anonymous" meeting? My name's Kyle and I... suck at fighting games, I've never really played them but always wanted to. Trying out SFV cause I hear it was made more accessible and... yeah.

I'm a complete button-mashing punching bag.

It's probably been already mentioned, but Gootecks has started a video series for brand new players, and it's pretty helpful from what i've seen.

Part One focuses primarily on Offence

Part Two focuses on Defence

And Part Three is focused on Throws.

I think he's continuing to upload more videos this week :)

Yeah. That should work! That's how I've done it since Alpha 2. You have to make sure to complete the Shoryuken motion, press a button, then quickly do the QCF and press a button again.

In SFV, let's say you're doing HP Shoryuken into Critical Art. I would do (using keypad notion -- assume the numbers on a keypad are directions on a joystick/d-pad) 623.HP~236.HP. That should give you the SRK hit quickly cancelled into the Critical Art. With motions that don't overlap like SRK and CA in this instance, it can be trickier, but the speed you can do CA/Super/Ultra/etc. motions will increase the more you do them.

sorry to quote you again, I tried your suggestion and I can manage to cancel SRK into CA. Now I need to learn how to do it in the proper combo! thanks

Hahahaha. I hit that same exact point last night after loosing what felt like 10 matches in a row (still at 0 points!). Sad to think I played ever iteration of SF4 and still learned nothing. I think I need to find someone to beat some good habits into me. I can practice crap against the dummy all day long (throw tech, anti-airs) but when it comes to an actual match I just don't react quick enough or completely forget all strategy.

I got my first Online win last night, with Karin. I can identify a few problems I need to address already:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWwYiG5PE5M

  • Learning the spacing for normal attacks (Round 2 was horrendous for just missing my opponent).
  • Still stuck with muscle memory of a crouching-forward attack pose thanks to history with Kunimitsu in Tekken.
  • Guard, guard, guard.

Any other pointers that are glaringly obvious to Street Fighter veterans? Thanks in advance for any advice.

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
getting a real feel for Chun Li, and now feel comfortable taking her online.

nothing feels better than having an answer for everything.

Last night I streamed a training session with my girlfriend, and I posted the VOD here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4Km5UGsb_I

I wouldn't actually recommend watching the whole thing because it's not like there's tech or even a bunch of specific instruction in there and it's two hours long, but I thought it'd be neat to show people who are trying to get other people to teach them (or thinking about teaching other people). This is how I teach people to play when I'm in-person with them, and I think it's fun.

Thanks for the clip :) Good stuff.
