Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

Awesome news, kind of expected with their shift in focus. They could have done some sort of PC-Xbox only cross network, but that would feel like a retread on GFWL that already failed. So nice job Microsoft! I'll finally be able to play with some of the folks that only play on Xbox.

I'm just confused on how this would work in terms of networking individuals. Everything like parties and in-game names would have to be built on a per-game basis instead of using established party chat and gamertag services of each platform (unless just Xbox and W10 because that's all just Live anyway).

Why do people keep saying this? Sony hasn't been against it. That's why YoshiP (FFXIV producer) has been saying that ball is in Microsoft's court as far as if the game will ever come to the Xbox One because they have to allow cross-platform play between the Xbox One and the PS4/PC. Dragon Quest X was also announced for the PS4, which means it's going to have cross-platform play between it and Nintendo platforms as well as the PC.

If that's the case, who's stopping crossplay between all platforms (the developers)?

People will need lists for their friends. Perhaps they'll use codes to populate them.

One might call them FRIEND CODES, as it were ;D

The fact that they casually dropped this bomb in a blog post before GDC makes me wonder what else they'll have to announce.

But how would the audio partying work?

i assume it wouldn't?

Utter guess on my part:

Things like friends list, voice chat, parties, are a platform-specific feature.
i.e. PSN users chat with PSN users, XBL folks party with XBL folks, and so on.

However, your actual MP Game network data is now allowed "anywhere" rather than just being allowed to go over XBL routes/to and from XBL players.

Microsoft. Like, how many multiplatform multiplayer games are on the Wii U and PS4/Xbox One? MS has been the one that's been stubborn about letting other console players play against those on XBL.

Good on you MS! not sure why it took so long but welcome to the party!
Hopefully this means I can still play multiplat games on PS4 instead of getting forced to buy Xbone games to play with my friends haha

If ganes as a service are going to be a thing. Cross play seems like a win/win for everyone for those types of titles.

Larger player base since all systems are combined. Meaning longer life of titles, and more people buying DLC.

For those wondering, games like Dreii currently allow cross-platform play between PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Wii U, PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. Sounds like Xbox will finally be joining everyone else.

This should be in the OP since people seem to be pretty clueless.

This is pretty cool. If PSN enables play with Xbox as well it effectively ends the "which console are you getting it on" issue for multiplayer games. Your friend can have one console and you another and still enjoy a game together. That's great.

I'm not sure why people keep on bringing up Sony, they haven't had issues with cross platform play in the past which includes consoles.

PS2, Xbox 360, and PC players were all together for Final Fantasy XI. From my understanding Dragon Quest X players are also shared between 3DS, Wii, Wii U, PS4, and PC.

Wait... Sony already allows for cross play between platforms, specifically Wii U and Xbone? Wasn't aware of that.

Hu? Rocket League has a PC/PS4 cross platform multiplayer since launch.

I was pointing out that it does not currently support Xbox One/PS4 - just XBO/PC, as stated in Chris Carla's blog post.

Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.

What the fuck does that even mean?

Sony has been fine with this since day one.

This thread is not for me.

Yeah, they always said it would be ok by them. But of course nothing have ever been implemented to this day, theoretically thanks to Microsoft's close-minded approach.

I'm just saying all they need is to lit the green light now, there's nothing in their way anymore. And then we're GO.

EDIT: I'm referring specifically about X1/PS4 crossplay. Of course Sony has been one step ahead with PS4/PC since the beginning of this gen.
