Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

$1000 GPU added to run The Last of Us at 4K?

The claim that it would run current games in 4K is bullshit.

If this happens it will be to increase resolution/framerate of VR games, and increase framerate of existing games.

A GPU upgrade for a consumer-affordable game console is not going to make even 90% of existing games magically upgrade to 4K. That GPU would have to be extremely powerful.

Not to mention, you can't just change resolution output and keep playing. It has to actually be developed to support multiple resolutions. Any overlay/2D elements onscreen have to be dealt with so they aren't tiny and/or out of position, and the images themselves possibly updated if they appear pixelated at a higher resolution.

Why do you have to upgrade your console?
Look at how a lot of last gen game ports are handled. Lots of them are badly optimized. If this iteration stuff happens with consoles you probably won't be getting the super optimized games fully taking advantage of the hardware late in the gen like Hall 4 or God of war Ascension. Instead the priority for optimization will be for the latest PS4 hardware and stuff like the original will probably be an afterthought

In a way I wouldn't like it because I already pulled the trigger on the OG PS4... But I want the most out of the games this gen so I would propably allow it.

This is how consumer electronics works.

A 5-7 year lifespan for a product is just not feasible, though I'm not sure if consoles will drop to a Apple style yearly model or go for some middle ground.

Edit: SCOOOOOOPS

Umm... The console lifespan was incredibly feasible, the hardware was stable, the performancs unchangjng, and the box a means to an end. Even a smaller company like Nintendo could compete against a giant like Microsoft or Sony because you weren't constantly pumping an unsustainable (for them) amount into R&D. They were always developing, but their hardware they got out of that could last a good several years, instead of a constant need to pump out annual hardware products. Sony and Microsoft bought into the model too, and their boxes were rarely profitable. If we're entering a world of heavily marked up annual console models that's a change to the industry...and not a good one.

I don't get it, one of the best things about consoles is the fixed hardware imo.

This is fine, but if we start seeing "PS4.5" exclusive games, that's gonna be a problem.

I really hope this isn't the case. At the very least, I would want them to give the option to upgrade to anyone who already owns the console. The reason I don't play on PC is because I don't want to fucking deal with upgrading all the time.Come on.

The death of console gaming. Fuck you Sony.

Man, talk about hyperbole lol.

Let it get confirmed at least. I think it will happen eventually. These longer console cycles are very risky. Basically, every generation, it's from square one again. That's really bad for the industry.

I mean, do you guys really want to wait until 2020 for a PS5 that plays 4k games? No one is going to force you to buy the PS4.5.

Urgh, hope not.
It would definitely be a case of buying a new system and personally, I'm on in favour of this kind of system.
Consoles staying the same throughout the gen is one of their strengths (And weakness too in fairness), but if consoles are going to be doing this...they're just making the case for PC's much stronger. In fact I can see more people just switching to PCs if consoles carry along this path.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
If this is true, Hubris Sony is back. Hubris for expecting console gamers will be happy to buy an iterative console a year or two after buying a PS4.

Oh please. This is a fucking awful idea, but this is not arrogant Sony back in the saddle.

If this is true, just keep in mind developers using get a dev kit or an idea for the next console well in advance of the consoles actual release. So I think the earliest we would be seeing this would be Holiday 2017. The earliest.
So by then, components will have dropped in price and it will be much more realistic to release a new console that is capable of 4k in the $400 to $500 price range.

It's an all in one package and much more user friendly to set up for consumers.

It's also cheaper.

We don't know how much cheaper, though. If they're aiming for 4K, it won't be cheaper at all. If they can keep it at current price? Sure, whatever. But we don't even have the next generation of video cards in the PC space available at consumer-prices yet.

As for the all in one package... I mean, a PC is too. Plus I'd argue that they're arguably easier to set up for a consumer compared to current-gen consoles. You can buy a whole gaming PC for $1000 and not have to set anything up. Just plug it all in.

I dunno, it all comes down to price for me.

I mean what graphics card can run 4K on PC today? GTX970? Doesn't that cost as much as a PS4 Just as it is?

No. A 970/980 won't run a game super well at 4K.

On one hand I'm not happy to see this but on the other, I'm all for improvements on the VR front.

I wouldn't get one until enough games took advantage of the upgraded hardware but if it's a situation like New 3DS with limited support I won't bother.

bish gets all the credit :)
Doesn't seem to make sense for Sony unless this is the all in one VR box. pS4 is selling great as is all the while being profitable.

So for the people who feel this is bullshit, what would you do if it turns out not to be bullshit?

Switch to PC for good.

And I wouldn't be too upset about it. Well, maybe a little, since I've been a console gamer since I was a wee lad, but it's just how the industry is now.

Considering the power that is needed to drive 4K games on PC, I doubt it's going to be able to play 4K games, certainly not at a $399 price.

Honestly...I think MS and Sony both seem to have an idea of where they are going...I mean they might not need a new console for this....Look at this:

Razer%20Blade%20Stealth-12-1200-80.jpg

Its an external GPU that connects to a laptop providing extra power. When Phil Spencer first mentioned this...this is what I thought of rather than a completely new box.

The industry is about to get very interesting and change if either Sony or MS followup.

I for one welcome this trend of new hardware more frequently. It works for every other piece of electronics, why should consoles be any different? I'll take an Xbox1.5 and PS4.5 right now please!

Because of their closed off nature. The OS, API's and all that jazz are designed specifcally to play, render games.

That's the main reason people buy a console over pc, or why people invest in PC. PC is open more choice in terms of what you can do with it. Your not just using it to play games.

This will proabably result in splitting the userbase. Nintendo did something similiar with the New 3DS and the result was there was only one game exclusively for it. This problem could also appear here I assume.

I feel like they would have predicted that MS would be forced into this, and that therefore they had to go ahead and do it to.

The fact that the PS4 can't do 4K (which is the big new thing) and is very weak by VR standards (the other big new thing) makes this a no-brainer for me.

Looking forward to it!

Shorter gens! More reveals! More excitement!

I'll take 4k at 30fps please, and I'll pay handsomely for it.

Yep. Microsoft were forced into it due to releasing such a bad console. A replacement from them was always going to come sooner rather than later.

Sony either stick with PS4 for a while longer or follow the same route. Otherwise they become the ones with the weaker, under powered console.

4K is BS too. They will support it for movies and maybe some indie games, but not AAA titles. They would require far too advanced hardware to fit in a console sized box for a 'cheap' price.

No, Sony. Don't ! Even 4 years after the launch I don't want to buy a new system. Games started to really take advantage of the system only this year, and still it's not like there is already 50 must have games on the system...

I guess if both Xbox and Playstation systems are going this way I'll go for PC.

who is to blame, Apple for doing that bullshti with their products, or Nintendo for introducing it to gaming devices with the increments done to the DS and 3DS?

This story is obviously BS. Of course they are working on something to replace ps4 bit it's years away. Whoever said this is confused. Maybe they saw a ps4/vr combo model and made bad assumptions
