Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

I think they are doing research on building one. i mean how could it really be a 4.5 if it doubles the resolution?

ps4 released in 2013, I dont think they'd even think of releasing something like this for another 2-3 years.

PS3 to PS4 was a 7 year gap.

Id say this PS4 to -> next console would be as early as 5 years and as late as 7 again. which would say it would release in 2018 - 2020 time frame.

Sorry, but a smartphone is not essential. Plenty of people out there are perfectly fine with a cheap flip phone.

Come on. Those people are the minority. My point is that it's easier to justify dropping $500 on an upgrade every year when it's something you use every day.

So for the people who feel this is bullshit, what would you do if it turns out not to be bullshit?

While I love my SCE exclusives I will probably go PC. Spending $400 every five years is fine. If it turns into spending $400 every three years might as well go with a cheaper ecosystem.

Depends how it pans out. Is this the start of new consoles every 3-4 years that are fully backwards compatible because of x86? Can I get a really good trade in deal for my current PS4 and every future iteration? If both are yes then I'd be okay with it.

I only went in expecting a 5 year generation instead of 7.

Why would anyone assume that support for the regular PS4 would suffer as a result?

You think Sony is going to alienate a 35m unit install base?

Don't be ridiculous. This will allow the new machine to play normal games with better performance and VR games without the processor. The regular PS4 will continue with business as usual.

I don't mind this. I'll only start to have problems with this if developers start releasing PS4.5 exclusives, or games that run like shit on the older PS4. If it just renders games with better graphics it's pretty harmless, just like powerful gaming PCs.

Jesus first Xbox doing an incremental update and now Sony too? I regret jumping into this gen early with PS4 and Xb1 if true.

Should have stuck to PC and Nintendo.

If there's Backwards and Limited Forwards capability and the hardware needed to do PSVR without the breakout box it could be interesting.

Introducing current gen remasters for the PS4.5.

Uncharted 4 remastered.

No, it'd be more like, "Your know that copy of Uncharted 4 you own? Yeah, well now you can play it at 60FPS. Or 4K. Or you can just keep your current PS4 and play it at the same standard. Your choice."

Sounds like a win to me.

SCOOOOOOOOOOOOPS

This is what i expected for both PS4 and Xbox One

There will most likely be promotions to get like $200-250+ to trade in your system to upgrade.

Am I the only one who thinks 4k is shit?
I think games look much better when you use all the hardware power to make the graphics as fancy as possible in 1080p, instead of putting out 4k but having to tone down the fanciness in order to achieve it.

I also think its a dumb move by Sony to split their hardware base. There is really no need for Sony to do that.

I think it depends. Dark Souls 1 still looks amazing and runs great at 4K 60fps. Just the AA alone from 4K is really noticeable. You can basically turn off AA settings. For new games I usually go for the compromise of 1440p and 50fps (on my UK TV) to still keep the graphical settings high.

Agreed.

This iteration shit will bite them in the ass. May look good financially to keep selling hardware at a 399-449 price tag.

But what happens when PS5 is announced? If it's not that much better than PS4.6 or whatever, sales will tank. Or developers won't be so froathing at the mouth to get new engines and development they will be fine with what currently is out and not put in the effort for the upgrade because of cost and their bottom line.

I know going from PS3/360 companies over hauled or built brand new engines to really show off the consoles increase in power.

If they go this route it will small incremental instead of people seeing the big difference like from PS3-PS4. I remember when booting up the PS4 seeing how fast the menu was , how fast multitasking was, and how snappy things loaded.

If PS5 is a bigger upgrade with similar architecture, i wont see the benefits right off the bat and that's what sells me most of the time.
This might be a sega situation. Consoles though have innards close to PC's are not PC's.

Forget about the PS5, the problem is that they need more power right now. 4k TVs are down to $1,000 and they have VR to sell that will be competing with Oculus and Rift.

They know MS will make a better box to do both those things, or throw the Xbox brand behind windows to make it happen there. Therefore they need more power now, or they risk losing everything.

Remember, the reason the Ps4 succeeded, as much as people hate to admit it, was the same as the 360 - because it's the best place to play multiplats, which is largely a power issue. If the new Xbox is allowed to become that box (CoD and Fifa in 4K!), Sony loses. They need to move now, it's as simple as that.

Hmm I was not expecting this news at all. I would be open to upgrading if there is a significant discount for current PS4 owners. I'm not confident this will 100% happen but with Kotaku corroborating this with several sources, and devs openly talking about it among each other makes it seem likely. And doing this to support PSVR makes it seem even more likely. Interesting.

I knew next gen consoles would go after 4k, but it sucks that these upgrades will also. Some games can't even run stable at 1080p/30fps on current gen :/

Is 4k really worth chasing, or is it just a hype point to advertise? I don't know how many people have 4k TVs.

So potentially we're looking at 2 outlays of $399 in this gen for a significant number of console gamers.

You can get a really good PC for $800. It'd push 1080p 60fps in most cases (and the low FPS 4K that I guarantee this PS4.5 will only be able to do) and wouldn't leave you with the same bad taste in your mouth that this potential move would.

Mid-gen upgrades are doomed. Always have been, always will be. Sony shouldn't be reacting to MS' moves. They should stick with their hardware as is and avoid pissing off a huge section of their user base (which includes me).

I like this development. Console generations shouldn't have to be confined to long 6-8 year periods, hardware should be able to evolve quicker than that. You can always sell the old hardware at a lower price point. Just make sure to ensure compatibility.

I know zero about the NX.

Star Fox Zero for NX confirmed.

Ugh, not a fan of the idea of tighter release cycles for consoles. Really not. There's nothing wrong with the standard 4-5 year cycle.

Agreed.

Then again, this could release 2017 or 2018 and still be in that cycle.

This more than likely will be the PS5, being that it is a shared ecosystem now with the OS and x86, it allows for smoother hardware cycles with no more 'square one' machines, and they are calling it the '4.5' right now.

This story is obviously BS. Of course they are working on something to replace ps4 bit it's years away. Whoever said this is confused. Maybe they saw a ps4/vr combo model and made bad assumptions

Multiple sources confirmed it so that would be a lot of people who made bad assumptions.

So for the people who feel this is bullshit, what would you do if it turns out not to be bullshit?

Assuming that no ps4.5 exclusive games came out, then I'd just be a little surprised by the demand for 4k gaming.

If ps4k exclusive game do come out tho, I'll knock over a magazine rack.

This is fine, but if we start seeing "PS4.5" exclusive games, that's gonna be a problem.

As much of a problem as exclusive New Nintendo 3DS games, exclusive Gameboy Color games, etc.

In short

Not sure if I think it's bullshit but I know what I'd do: buy it if it's something I want and it's real. If the upgrade is something substantial and increases the lifespan of the PS4, I'm in.

Yeah that's not the issue most people have...

I buy into consoles because I don't want to keep upgrading.

Now i feel I have no choice to enjoy the games
In the way they're intended to be.

I mean, let's be honest. Both the PS4 and Xbox One are severely underpowered in today's market. It needs help to stay consistent and feel cutting edge in any form or fashion. The unfortunate side effect is...why wouldn't someone just go PC at that point?

Why don't I just sack consoles off then if I have to upgrade every few years? I thought the point was that I wouldn't need anything else in 6+ years of a consoles life span?

I guess I really have to not buy a PS4 until E3 is over...

I fucking hate this kind of revisions. Slimmer models are fine, but this is terrible.

I would just wait until this new PS4 launches instead of getting one this fall :l. Sucks that I might have to wait until early 2017-2018 to get a PS4 but the more money I save I suppose :).

maybe someone saw a plan from sony for a ps4 that is able to play 4k blu rays and nothing more...

don't know, but I would not like it if this rumor turns out true.

I choose consoles over PC for simplicity and not having to upgrade every two years. If this is seriously happening, fuck them honestly.

Christ, pay for online games, buy games cut in half so you have to spend more on DLC, buy online only games, buy as expensive as the console add-on VR, and now, upgrade your system every once in a while?

I seriously miss the days when u bought one system, the game, and you were set for years.

But its an article from Kotaku... so i will calm my temper until it is really happening.

What's the point? It's selling like crazy. A more powerful ps4 would provide what exactly for Sony? People buy consoles because they are affordable.

You could but a PS4 for 200 bucks or a PS4.5 for 400 bucks. Sony win either way. They need more headroom for games, VR along with 4K support. We just aren't use to this in the console space, a shock but if they don't totally screw us over, it should be okay. I do wonder how much juice devs will get from consoles though and when they decide to not give a damn about pushing old models, maybe it doesn't matter as there is no secret to x86 power unlike last gen designs so going forward they'll not get the same leaps anyway with PS4 and Xbox One.
