Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

I don't know what I think about this. I don't believe the whole 4k thing. The PS4 has trouble with 30fps in some games at medium settings. 4K is too much for a 980ti in a lot of games when you want decent framerates. And I really doubt Sony starts selling a PS4.5 with a 980ti for 1000$.

4K is possible for some games like Salt & Sanctuary etc.
4K at 30-60fps in games like Witcher 3? Nope, I don't believe it.

I guess with how fast tech moves this makes sense. Though, maybe they can offer some sort of trade up program? Not sure.

Makes things a little more interesting if all three are planning "new" consoles again. Though the idea of console wars is donezo.

Yeah.

People who keep bringing up a trade in programs sound bonkers.

Does Apple have a trade in program? Samsung?

Sony won't have one either. You can sell your PS4.0 independently.

I may expect promotions. Free games or something like that, but they're not losing money with trade in programs.

Isn't bargaining a stage of grief?

I get the feeling this thread will be like the one where everyone called Kotaku liars or fools when they reported that Versus XIII as we knew it was dead, possibly being rebooted as FFXV, and then two years later it turned out they were totally right even down to the timeframe when it happened.

I get the feeling that you're right on the money with this.

Maybe not exactly two years, but within a 2 year timeframe, yeah.

I remember when Xbox had this same rumor... And everyone said it signaled that MS was getting out of the console business...

I guess Sony is leaving too?

Yeah.

Yes they do.

My problem is that it would feel like a kick in the nuts to early adopters, as selfish as it is. That we could have held out for a superior experience.

Then again it's not like I'm buying a 4k TV in the next 5 years, and we have no idea what degree of benefit psvr would see. What will be will be.

Obvious, these consoles were never powerful enough. Its dumb to call it PS 4.5 though. It will be a fully backwards compatible machine, that doesn't make it an iteration. It will be a full power console in 2018 that uses the same UI and supports all PS4 games, but new guts making it a PS5 would be my guess. The five year console cycle is back. Sony and Microsoft learned their lesson from last gen.

True! And just because Sony is briefing developers on this device doesn't mean it's 100% going to happen, or that it's going to happen any time soon. But those in this thread calling it bullshit should really read the whole story (and look at our history of reporting).
Maybe instead of getting defensive, you could acknowledge that the article adds a significant amount of padding to some bare-bones rumors.

The opening statement is:

Sony is currently planning a new version of the PS4 with increased graphical power and games running at 4K resolution, developer sources tell Kotaku.

But then you go on to say:
It’s unclear if ‘PS4.5’ is an official name or just a nickname that developers have been using.
So, a big part of this is that you make an extremely strong supposition. After all, 'PS4.5' implies that the hardware will be iterative but won't actually be a generational leap. It carries with it all sorts of implications, and since you already admitted you're not sure if it's an official name, a nickname, or maybe just an internal nickname given by Sony, the whole thing kinda falls apart, doesn't it?

And then your story ends with this:
Sony is exploring the possibility of releasing a more powerful console way before the PlayStation 5.

"Exploring the possibility" is a little bit of a backpedal compared to your bold title of "Sony is working on Playstation 4.5" and your bold opening statement, isn't it?

Perhaps this is why some people are leery.

But no. No, the only people calling bullshit are those who didn't click your article...

Scoooooooooooooops!

Man, I hope this isn't true but knowing Kelepek he wouldn't have ran this story unless he was very confident in it.

...lacks reading comprehension.
So first they start to make money with the hardware itself, then they start bringing out new iterations every three years? Makes sense for them (Sony and Microsoft). Isn't what I expect of console gaming anymore, if this becomes a reality I'm going PC for good.

I know Sony usually don't comment on rumors but this seems like something they might want to get in front of. If not true, I can see a rumor like this creating a lot of hesitation for new customers. That's something you don't want when your introducing want is essentially a new console.

I don't think Sony is going to risk confusing the market when their console is currently dominating worldwide. However, I believe it's going to be the next logical step for them once this generation winds down. They're going to release a console that shares the same library and OS but has beefier specs. It doesn't mean they're going to release it this year or even next year—it's likely it'll just release when you'd expect their next console to.

Yeah I would have to agree. Kotaku in general are about as legit as it gets when it comes to inside info / leaks

You and that poster have some intense confirmation bias and selecting reading going on.

Most people in this thread are not enthusiastic about this news.

No. I'm not saying there isn't hate for it, I see a lot of it. I just find it hilarious is all as some people were really like this wouldn't happen. Just joking around.

If anything, this will push Sony to finally get off their asses and ensure forward compatibility with all digital releases moving forward.

No more 'PS2 Classics on PS4' bullshit!

Just PS2 classics.

Would it be difficult for developers to have graphical settings for consoles?

I mean, a PS4.5 running at Ultra vs. a PS4 running at medium... Is there no market for a beefed up console, without confusing the masses?

Everything is playable on both, one just looks significantly better.

This is a great idea. Compared to the PC I bought 2 years before my PS4, the PS4 feels like a considerably underpowered machine. Not to mention, I cannot even pass the Valve VR test with my current video card. This will greatly improve the viability of the PSVR.

I love the idea. Love it!

The only thing is I hope they don't just put out a marginal upgrade that's at like a $500 range.

I want the power of a PC with the convenience of a console, and PS4 exclusives. If that costs me $1,000 that's fine. Give me the option to give you that much money Sony and I'll do it.

Wait when it was about Xbox i remember lots of complaints about upgrades, i guess now instead that's a awesome news right?

Why do you have to always stir shit in threads? You don't even read them thoroughly and then start bitching about stuff that didn't happen. Plenty of people are complaining.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
This is gonna make for some....interesting times.

Not sure I'll upgrade from my PS4, but it depends on how far the new version ups the power, I suppose.

We'll be looking at 4K remasters within the same generation as the original games were released. And to think we we used to joke about the inevitability of them for the PS5!

I mean, is what every other hardware product does so it makes sense to follow that model.

PS4 would sing with a 720p target(roughly twice the graphics resources than with a 1080p frame buffer). If they launch a PS4+ and the development base is PS4 720p you would see much netter graphics than today.

I'm hyped if this is true. As long as the content is available on both consoles I'm fine with paying more for upgraded graphics/resolution/fps every 3-4 years. Though business wise I have no idea how viable this is.

PS3 7-8 years cycle was so fucking long and this needs to end.

Sad thing is people that bought years 6-7 whined upgrade wasn't needed. I would not mind as PC will always be more powerful. They are selling to a ultra cheap fanbase that wants it all without paying. People saying stuff like they would be forced to upgrade is ridiculous. Guess PS4 needs to last for 10 years for ultimate value smh.

Apple sells QOL products that fit in your whole day, travels with you, and are fashionable status symbols.

Surely this arguement can die peacefully now, right?

No!

Sony can also be a status symbol. Plus Apple also refreshes their iPads and McBooks annually. And they damn cost well above the price of a PS4

So you would rather have none of the anythings from PC gaming?

Hint: its called options based on how much you can spend, what performance you want, and what is good enough for your enjoyment. Some people play PC games on low and don't give a fuck.

I agree not everyone has to upgrade nor wants to. But I'm more or less talking about the openness of PC not being a thing on consoles. As they are closed platforms of course.

At least for me, if I were to choose, I'd choose the open platform than the closed one.

An upgraded GPU/CPU to handle native 4k resolution, this really just sounds like it will be the PS5.

Sony doesn't exactly need an incentive to do this, they are the market leader, the PS4 continues to sell huge amounts and it's not being sold at a lost, they have yet to peak their PS4 sales yet and this sounds like undercutting themselves.

This move actually sucks way harder than anything PC gaming does. With PC gaming, I at least get to pick and choose which parts of my build are still relevant.

For my next upgrade for instance, my CPU/Motherboard/half of my RAM/Case/some of my HDDs aren't likely to go anywhere. Chuck in my PSU as well depending on how energy efficient future GPUs are and that's a pretty significant amount of my components.

There's likely no halfstep here. I'd just have to buy a Super PS4 wholesale.

If Sony does this, I'm probably pulling out of the PS4 and picking up a 4.5 or whatever on the cheap at the tail end of it's life.

Gen X

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
If this does happen I'd say it's safe to say pretty much all games will work on both 4 & 4.5, only difference is the 4.5 supports higher rez. Might get the odd game that's 4.5 only like Uncharted 5 or TLOU2. ;-)

Oh but you see it too huh? Don't you see that this is the exit strategy for Sony from the console business? There's no way devs would be able to handle another target platform. It's just too much work and publishers won't be on board. This is dead in the water. LOLOLOLOL.
Most people are agreeing with you, except for the part about the exit strategy. There is no need to be facetious.

interesting...

If we can upgrade, I'll have to start trying to find a way to break it to the wife.... This is not gonna go well for me.

Try running Battlefront at 900p and 60 fps on a Radeon HD 7850 which is the closest GPU we have compared to the PS4 GPU.

The PS4 CPU also runs at just 1.6Ghz. Good luck running anything on PC at 1.6 Ghz.

You should also look into the insane markups on Nvidia GPUs. They make hundreds of dollars in profit off of them.
