On March 18th, Telltale is heading out to Austin for the show where we'll be discussing the very first details of our upcoming series based on BATMAN for the first time! Be one of the first in the know on our next episodic series as Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller interviews our team to dive deeper into the complex life and mind of Bruce Wayne, the duality of his own identity, and the struggle of responsibility in saving a city overcome with corruption and villainy.

We’re excited to talk some more about the series and how development at Telltale can often work quite unlike most other game developers out there. In case you missed it, just this week Telltale CEO Kevin Bruner spoke with Kotaku discussing the future of the studio, hinting just a bit about what’s in store for our new series, simply saying, "It’s not like any other Batman game out there."

Starts at 2:30 PST, that's in 30 minutes!

It sounds like it's not just the reveal of the Batman game but a general panel about how Telltale approaches games and development. Should be quite interesting

Update 1: Summary of main information

Archived panel:

https://www.twitch.tv/sxswgaming/v/55165431

-Episode 1 arriving this summer
-Rated M - similar mature content to TWAU
-Takes place in its own universe (not tied to comics or movies)
-New gameplay mechanics and engine improvements (sounds minor but without specifics ifs hard to say - but they have heard all of the complaints and are working to address it)
-Large focus on Bruce Wayne, they want to explore what it's like to be him and how the choices you make as Bruce affect what you do as Batman
-You can choose to deal with certain situations as Bruce, or put on the suit and handle it as Batman
-Tales from Borderlands team is working on it
-Voice casting sounds close to done but not quite finalized

Update 2: Blog post from Telltale

The team at Telltale hit the stage in Austin at the SXSW Gaming Expo today along with Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller, to come out of hiding and talk details about the upcoming series based on BATMAN for the very first time. While development has been moving along swiftly over the last year, production on in-game visuals for all of Telltale’s series always tends to come together closer to launch, as the writers and designers spend their time focusing very heavily on the story and script first and foremost.

It’s still too soon to show any scenes from the game, but the team was happy to confirm that players can expect to see it closer to its upcoming premiere which is slated for THIS SUMMER! Additional details gathered from the panel were as follows:

  • Batman is the perfect character for the studio to explore in a Telltale series, giving the team the opportunity to dive deeper into the mind of the man behind the mask. Each night, Bruce Wayne chooses to change Gotham for the better. The team wants to explore what the consequences are of the player’s actions when decisions made as Bruce have a critical impact on his nightly crusade as Batman, and vice versa. Certain key situations will give the player the decision to approach a scene as Bruce or Batman, with consequences for both sides.
  • Fresh interpretation of the universe set in current times, not tied to any existing iteration of Batman in games, film, or comics. Story will focus on Bruce and Batman, not an examination of the extended 'Bat-family,' (Robin, Nightwing, etc.) Fans can expect certain series staples such as Alfred Pennyworth, Vicki Vale, James Gordon, and Renee Montoya. Telltale is looking to keep the villains more tightly under wraps until closer to the premiere.
  • Certain characters will have a deeply personal relationship with Bruce in his private life, and decisions made as Bruce or Batman will affect their paths towards corruption or redemption.
  • The player's actions will help shape the Gotham that Bruce deals with during the day, as well as the criminals that Batman faces at night.
  • Team is committing to a non-photorealistic interpretation of the universe, enhancing engine and technology to deliver a more seamless living comic book art direction.
  • Taking inspiration from the works of over 75 years of artists such as Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, and Neal Adams.
  • Like some other Telltale series, the game will be landing at M (Mature 17+) rating, and the cinematic approach will feel more akin to an R-rated film.

I'm probably getting my hopes up too high but I'd love if this brought back some of their adventure game elements

Batman is perfect for that kind of detective work

Their games run on iOS/Android for phones/tablets

Don't count on it anytime soon

That shouldn't stop them from using a brand new game engine that is more optimized and not as clunky. They don't even need to create a new one, just hire some guys who know their way around the UE4, or something.

Could they not do a cell shaded 2D syle instead on 3D models?

Engine probably couldn't handle it I guess.

That's missing the point. Bruce Timm's iconic pin-up style is decidedly graphic with its use of line, shadow, and shape. It's not designed to be rendered like that. Same reason the Simpsons always look gross when rendered in 3D.

That's pretty cool.
In some instances you're able to choose to tackle the situation as Bruce or Batman. It's your choice and I like that.

Summer 2016 launch date.

Attend the party or stop crime.

Piss off Vikki or piss off Gordon.

Doesn't matter, they'll both hate you in the end.

"New tech going in that you'll see in Batman and future Telltale games"

BUT it's the same engine then.

:(

edit - a "significant step". hmm.

It looks like they will never change that engine as long as they can release their games to smartphones and old-gen too. I can't believe that TFTB at times looked worse than TWAU or TWD2 when i played it.

The most interesting thing about Batman (to me) are his allies, and I swear every game just sidelines them. *sighs* This is what I get for being weird, lol.

I very much doubt they'll change their engine anytime soon, if ever, they'll most likely just keep enhancing it like with the Call of Duty engine. If you compare The Walking Dead S1 to Tales from the Borderlands Tales is considerably less janky. I'm just worried that they'll use some awful filter like they did with Game of Thrones which ruined the visuals entirely.

Your choices can shape who becomes your villain? They're skating around the topic, but that sounds nice. Also, I'm getting the feeling that we're not going to see any kind of footage today, and that's pretty disappointing.
