I don't understand the negative sentiment.

SONY and MS providing consumers choices; likewise, I seriously doubt they would release hardware that would fragment the existing consumer base, this would be anti-consumer and neither entity is that dumb based on learnings to-date.

I am 100% for PS4.5 and XBOX1.5.

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
I'm excited to see what happens here between what Sony does and MS does if these rumors turn out to be true.

MS releasing more games on PC and having an ecosystem on PC that emulates a console(not as much control) really makes it seem like these rumors are true. Look at how many posts in this thread talk of switching to PC, MS likely foresaw that.

This actually would negatively impact early adopters for the actually New generation. Maybe not at first but over time.

It will have long lasting affect that will slowly decrease console sales over a generational period.

When this new model hits maybe in late 2017 or something there will be something like 55 million original PS4s sold. Base PS4 will be the target model for long long time.

People need to realize that PS4, as it is now, is a very powerful hardware, already trumping XBO in every manner. We have seen stable games with stable frame rate and resolutions. What PS4K would do is not make the OG PS4 games 720p/30fps. They'll just make games better for the newer hardware i.e. more framerates or higher textures or lighting techs. Think DX11 to DX12. Think "High" to "Ultra" difference. I don't expect them to change the hardware that much without pissing too many people off. It's a solution to the ever emerging excitement for 4K finally taking off from no products to some products, and Sony doesn't want to wait till PS5 to ride the wave. Playstation is Netflix's biggest hardware, and with Netflix pushing 4K, Sony needs to step it up before someone else takes over the market share. With other electronic companies pushing 4K blu-ray, Sony doesn't want to end up in the wrong end of comparison chart where they mention that PS4 cannot run 4K blu-rays. With everyone showcasing how great their VR system is when running on a high-end PC, Sony wants to say "Me too" and provide better framerate for it i.e. 120 and not 90.

We may never see games made specifically for the new hardware or older games gimped because of it. NX and XBO will suffer and developers won't make that happen and stick to the lowest denominator. However, with XBO getting a hardware refresh, Sony wants to stay relevant and not lose the top spot, and will try and match it.

As you should. This is a major FU** you to your current clients. What was the point of paying C$449 less than six months ago if a more powerful version were to be introduced in 2017?

And why the hell should I buy a PSVR at launch when I've now been conditioned to expect a better PSVR model soon?

Same here but when? And it's going to depend on the price, how are they going to handle it? I don't think many people will pay full price for a upgrade.

Well, I tell you. There is.

I can't and won't "upgrade" my PS4, because I have motherfucking P.T. installed, and due to goddamn Konami and ludicrous "depublishing" of software, I can't even get back what I have once I switch the system.

I thought I could do with ONE device per generation, well, I am forced to stay on this device and can't do anything even if I wanted to upgrade.
I'll have to choose to either keep P.T. or play FFVII: Remake with even nicer graphics and FPS... dang it Konami.

I'd rather buy a PC then.

You should have a PC anyways, there are many great games on there that don't end up on consoles.

Though if you're gonna go PC-exclusive, you'll likely miss out on console exclusives. Unless Nintendo/Sony pull a MS and release their stuff on PC.

That would be pure bliss.

PS 5 can just be another incremental upgrade, they can just release new versions every 3 years or so. As a PC gamer, I'm fine with this, it means games that are less held back by consoles.

Games where never held back by console but development costs and profits. Why would developers waste money and time on making games/settings for 1% of PC userbase?

I guess you never bought a phone either, since at any given time a better model is on its way in less than year.

I would certainly expect Sony to keep iterating on the technology. It would be disappointing if they didn't. Just buy what you want, and unless a newer model is right around the corner, don't sweat it. The tech is going to be constantly improving rapidly, especially during the infancy years.

While PS4 does have a somewhat more powerful GPU than Xbox One, I do not agree that it is "very powerful hardware", in 2016. When PS4 launched in 2013, it was a very conservative hardware spec, with a CPU of a low-end laptop and a GPU of a midrange laptop. Nothing like when PS3 launched in 2006 or Xbox 360 in 2005, which were very high spec machines for the time.

I buy a new Unlocked Phone every 2 or 3 years.
I buy a new GPU for my PC about every 2 or 3 years.
I have no problem buying a New Upgraded PS4 or XBOne every 2 or 3 years.

In fact, I was disgusted by MS's originally policy with 24/7 DRM on XBOne and have refused to buy one. But if MS does the smart thing and offer an updated version of the XBOne, I'll be first in line because this is something I completely support.

Look at Phones. We are up to the iPhone 6s right now, with the iPhone 7 coming up soon. In the year 2016, the iPhone 5 is still a relevant device, and can play 99.999999999999% of the same apps as the iPhone 6s. In fact I'd go so far as to say that even the iPhone 4s can about that many games.

So, using the Apple iOS ecosystem (It's about as closed as the consoles, so it is comparable) of software and devices as an example. Lets say that the XBOne/PS4 we got in 2013 can play 99.9999999999% of the same games as an XBOne/PS4 from 4 Generations later, but at lower quality settings. Bear in mind the cadence of the console updates won't likely be yearly, and most likely every 3 years. So the PS4/XBOne we all got in 2013 will still be able to play games released in 2023...that's a 10 YEAR life cycle...at which point Sony/MS can do like apple and drop support for the earliest generation device upon the release of it's newest device.

The big kicker for us as gamers with Sony/MS doing this, is the fact that this basically opens full backwards compatibility. Maybe you won't get the XBox One+ or PS4k this year, but maybe in 2019 you'll pick up the XBox Two or PS5 and still be able to play Knack or RYSE from 2013. Then in 2022 you decide to skip on the XBox Two+ and PS6, but come 2025 you decide to pick up the XBox Three or PS7 and guess what? You can STILL play that copy of Knack or RYSE you bought 12 years earlier.

That's just AWESOME to think about right now, because that's basically what I've had on PC. I hopped on Steam in 2004 with Half-Life 2. Back then I had a single-core Athlon64 3200+ and a Radeon 9800XT. Pretty decent parts at the time. It's been pretty awesome to be able to play Half-Life 2 again on Much better hardware and get even more out of it. On my 4790k + GTX980-Ti I can play Half-Life 2 at 4k and get about 120FPS.

The thought with XBOne games like Rise of the Tomb Raider being patched to run at 60fps/1080p on XBOne+, or GTAV getting patched for both similarly. This doesn't take away anything from people who already bought the consoles, but giving an option for people who want more.

It works for phones, it works for graphics cards, why shouldn't it work with consoles especially considering the breakneck speed at which technology is advancing.

Yeah. As long as this doesn't mean exclusive PS4K games I really don't see the issue for current owners. Again. Sony has done this to smaller degree already before ( PSP2000 with double the RAM). Did anyone complain then?

At the end of the day, I don't get why a lot of videogame nerds wish big corporations are their buddies. They don't care for what's best for the consumer as much as they care about what's in their pockets. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, they're all the same. So getting all your panties twisted about Sony would do this won't matter since you'll pay for it anyway. They know this, and they'll exploit it. I don't even hate them or care that much, it's just how business works. And it is business, make no mistake on that.

This is the future and it will be fine. Of course they'll hope VR takes off(I don't think it will as much as companies hope but that's different matter) because there's potential money there. Even if it's short term. You can accept now, or you eventually will if you do like videogame said as much as posting on GAF entails.

As long as the games work on both systems I'm fine with it!
New advanced system every 2 years is a great idea. Just make it backwards compatible like iPhone!!
